Good for Japan, it’s been almost 80 years since the end of WW2 and Japan has become a solid trade partner and Ally in the region. For those who don't understand the naming, Japan uses a similar naming convention to the United States. Izumo and Kaga are both Japanese provinces, and historically battleships were named after provinces. It's just like how American battleships were named after states. The previous class of helicopter destroyers, Hyuga and Ise, are also provinces and names of WWII battleships. The Japanese names for ships sound much more distinctive because of how foreign they are that we don't realize they use the same naming convention. If you've been to Japan and wonder why you haven't heard of these provinces is because Japan switch to a system of prefectures early in the Meiji Restoration but the Japanese Navy has always chosen to go with the classic names even to this day. A good example is the amphibious assault ship JS Osumi. It was a ship commissioned in 1998 that is named after a historic province that has never been used before for a ship name.

There are at least seven countries, not counting the US, Japan, Britain, and France who don't like China and are capable of interdicting this oil supply. I can go on and on but you get the idea. I was stationed with the USAF in Japan from 1972 through 1975. @@Ironfangzu Why yes.. we realize the British empire isn't a thing anymore. That doesn't change the military spending relative to GDP, which is high for NATO countries. Should NATO as a whole increase military spending to counter Russian and Chinese imperialist threats? Yes, but the UK is already ahead on this and one of the few countries in the world with aircraft carriers, matching the same number as China. Regarding missions in the Indo-Pacific, there are already Royal Navy ships deployed there and they are planning to send a carrier group next year to Japan, so funny you mention it. But also the UK is located in the north-Atlantic so it's almost 3 times further than, for instance the US west coast. And of course that's not even counting the US islands as well as leased naval basis. For comparison, Chinese carriers and/or support ships can't even cross the pacific as UK ships sail 45-50,000km round trips. Or Russia's tugboat powered not-an-aircraft-carrier can barely move anywhere. So the UK is also ahead when it comes to aircraft carriers (Turkey and France have 1 each).

Japan had four flat-deck "helicopter destroyers" already, Hyuga, Ise, Izumo and Kaga. Of the four, Hyuga and Ise were previously WWII BBs, and Izumo was a pre-WWI armored cruiser. Which is to say, it doesn't seem like the Japanese are too attached to past CV names. In fact, Kaga is the odd one out of the CVs, as it was converted from a BB of the Tosa class, and therefore only one of two CVs to be named after Japanese provinces (the other of course being the Shinano, also a converted BB). The Imperial Navy Kidō Butai, also known as the Mobile Force or the Carrier Strike Task Force, was a combined carrier battle group comprising most of the aircraft carriers and carrier air groups of the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) during the first eight months of the Pacific War. It played a crucial role in Japan's early victories in the Pacific, including the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. The Kidō Butai was formed in April 1941 and consisted of six aircraft carriers, two battleships, two heavy cruisers, nine destroyers, eight oil tankers, and twenty-three submarines. The carriers were the most powerful warships in the world at the time, and their combined airpower was unmatched by any other navy.
