My late husband was a roofer and capped and flaunched many a chimney, he particularly loved working on old properties and he had the same work ethic as you. I very much enjoy your videos and you made a beautiful job of the chimney.

Those brick fixing should be lead, just put strips of lead in and torch it till molten thats how they did it back in the day. Also, the pots new btw.

The "pot" isn't a chimney pot...it is a basic flue liner, that has been used as a makeshift pot. You can see the rebate at the bottom of it.

Use NHL at least folks. Not perfect but better than OPC. Staples can be held tightly by pouring molten lead around them. Leave chimneys vented. They will wet out with condensation and cause the original lime mortar to soften. Also creates a smell in room where warm air can't rise out of chimney stack. Can end up smelling acrid from the damp soot.

awesome job, the feeling of taking something down which is 200+ years old and youre having to knock away at it with a hammer is unbelievable, im a self employed builder with my dad whos being doing it since he was 15 (hes 70 now) and hes adamant the quality of sand/cement just is not the same as its either been diluted down or stretched further (one bag of old cement is now 3 bags of new) whats your opinion on this, same with the strength of mortar cleaner, he says it would burn your skin back in the day, now its just a twinge, due to many reasons, would be nice to know what you think and if you think there will be people knocking away at your/other work in 200 years to come, Great video love the detail you have

What is the benefit of the lime mortar? Why not use compo like in the brick laying videos besides just being traditional?

Allows the chimney to breath. Also keeps the stones from getting damaged. As Cement is too strong

That's not how you cap a chimney off. It needed a lead tray on top instead of a tiny piece of dpc. It will need to be done again in a few years' time, especially if you used nhl 3.5 to flaunch. You need to use a strong grano/gritsand and cement mix unless you have to use lime use nhl 5 instead. Also the flue liner on top looks ridiculous. Could have got a reclaimed chimney pot or not bothered. Do it once do it right.

That’s not a flue liner anyways, it’s a pot and was the original that’s why he left it on. The flue liner goes from the back of the old combi boilers up the inside of the chimney and made out of stainless steel

It's a terracotta flue liner mate. They aren't use so much anymore. It's mainly concrete and like you said the flexible stainless nowadays. But that, in the video is 100 percent a terracotta flue liner. They aren't supposed to be exposed.

the pot should be open ended the flue should not be closed off a lead cap should then be made for the pot .A lead bowl for capping pots was the first thing i made at building college where i was learning plumbing in the leadwork class in 1965

Its a problem capping off the chimney as you did, will lead to mould buildup in a few years time, best to leave the chimney open or it'll need redoing in a few years.

I had a chimney capped and 6 months later was getting damp coming through the bedroom wall. Called out another builder and he uncapped the chimney then added a mushroom. He explained that this allowed the chimney to breathe. Never had an issue after.
