I get this question all the time and I've never really addressed it. So just a bit of an insight of my thinking nowadays, and not being as career driven as I was 3 or so years ago.
Hope to have a good conversation in the comments with those people who have run their own businesses, or perhaps still do.
p.s. people also assume they bricklaying is my only source of revenue, it's not. p.s.s. being self employed you don't really wanna be earning over 52.5k a year anyway
Cheers guys ☺️

@@Karl-p6h I dont really understand what you mean the by first sentence about wages. if your implying that people working for wages or for a employer on a average wage cant get rich then i dont like your mindset and you are wrong. let me explain you can easily buy an investment property while in your early 20s from borrowing money from the bank on a "Average wage" ($30 a hour) say the house is worth $500k for example, and you buy in the right place that has good capital growth? in 1 year that property will rise a good $50k, not to mention its not costing you anything to pay the repayments, as your renting it out for income while still working your job for employer on $30 a hour... 5 years go by now.. now the house has positive equity, and you've paid a good 100k of the loan, now you buy your SECOND rental, with the equity the first home has equated. its a daisy chain, this can all be done for working for $30 a hour. an yes I have done pretty well for my self. but i do not live in Dubai unfortunately

I had drivers come and say I'm thinking of getting my own truck and I'd say go for it, I'll help you where I can. They'd give it some thought and decide it wasn't for them after all. I was invariably happy because I knew they weren't cut out for it. It can ve pretty brutal at times.

I ran a desk job in finance for 25 years before having a complete change of career, buying refurbishing and selling houses. It was a massive change to what I was used to. Having done it for 13 years, I’m ready to go back to sitting at a desk, or at least not having to do physical labour any more! I’ve never regretted any career choice, and that is the attitude I think you should have. If it works for you, then do what you want. Izzy, that is the major problem with the building industry: full of blokes with fragile egos who make muggy comments like that. They crave belittling others to make themselves feel superior. You always see it in the comments: ‘do this’, ‘do that’. These people pretend they’re happy - except they’re not. True happiness is when you help others and you enjoy seeing them succeed - not perceiving them as a threat. I can tell that you have that happiness and it elevates you higher than they’ll ever be. Another thing people forget, is that you only have one life. It is up to all of us how we chose to live it and no one has the right to dictate our path. No one. Your family will be stronger than any brick you’ve ever laid fella. You’ve made the right call and I can only commend it 👏

But it's a one man show and it is sucking life and time out of me. What's more i can do most of the works on domestic site and usually to a good standard and because of thay i have to carry million of tools in my van, keep being asked if i fancy a job etc. The reason i keep doing it is the flexibility and money as i can push hard and make what is needed (however i am not for ripping people off so I am not a millionaire - far from it! Have to work every week). I had some guys working for me in the past but i didn't like it, all the hassle with fuckups, dealing with nonsense plus you loose your time flexibility when you are a boss. I have three kids still home so have to bring that money in but i keep exchanging my time and body strenght for it. That's a nature of being a man i guess. All the best to you mate. As someone who "worked for myself" for eight years as a translator, I can absolutely understand your desire for an easy life with not having to constantly find work. I found that freelancing is best suited for those who genuinely enjoy the hustle and whose job plays a big part in their identity. Because if those things aren't there, it's just miserable: you do SO MUCH more work trying to find work than actually working, you have very little separation between work and your personal life, it's just exhausting. I've always viewed work as just a tool that allows me to do what I love: travel, hike, explore, visit remote places. Ever since I started working as a mechanical engineer, it's been so easy: show up to work at 7:00 AM, work until 3:00 PM, home by 3:30, free weekends, paid time off, and my time off is TIME OFF, not "time spent thinking about how I'm going to find my next gig".

Feel much less stressed working for a company and now even if this job goes belly up, I’ll just get another. I’m a bit older than you and wish I’d thought more like you when I was younger.

Good lad, you have a terrific attitude. I’m 71 and was self employed for almost 50 years (not in the building trade) and it is bloody hard. I was good at my job but not great as a ‘businessman’. In the end I became very ill, so keeping in touch with clients, and dealing with the ‘new breed’ of clients who had a different approach was really stressful. I was lucky that I was financially ok and so I drifted into retirement. I’m happier now than I have been for years…and I feel healthier too.

Good morning Izzy , I myself am self employed but have no desire to employ anyone or grow my business any more than I’m happy with so like you I am a glorified labourer, I don’t see the problem either in this I dont want to be in charge of anyone or the ‘BOSS’ of anyone I’m just happy either what I have . Stay safe mate , you are a top man 🤜🏻🤛🏻

I don't even work with my hands for a living, I am in computers, but fascinated to listen to your video. It makes sense 100%, you have to do what you enjoy. Business matters can be tedious and time-consuming, and fill your head with worries. That's no way to live. You show a great example for others, because so many people in our society are deluded by this idea of money-making and 'own business' - but its not the answer. Totally great philosophy you have.

You have absolutely made the right choice Izzy. You and only YOU know what is right for you and your wellbeing, and having a job to go to each and every day, with set hours and regular paycheques means yes you can get a life balance. You knock off at the end of each day, leave work at works doorstep, cross the threshold the following day etc. No worrying about where and when your next job is coming as was the case when you were self employed. You know your working week and hours, so can book your holidays and have a social life without the stress of wondering if a job comes along that would scupper any pre- planned holidays or events you were going to. Yeah mate right choice, can tell from your vids that you’re a happier more content person. All the best to you .

One of the best videos about life I have watched in a while. Your Granny was right. And let’s be honest, you were wrong …. You are a bloody good bricklayer. And your video content is pretty good as well. I spent many years as a senior manager and always had a few people in my team that I paid much more than I earned. Great people doing a great job are worth paying for. It’s nothing to do with “rank”. Keep doing what you love, and if that changes over time, change to accommodate it.

We employed 14 workers did foundations curbs sidewalks had a boom truck lots of forms but when the recession hit in 2007, everybody ran out of money luckily we were able to sell everything off now I haul petroleum for an awesome company and at the end of my day I go home I know exactly where you’re coming from brother😊👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

It's like you say mate. Do whatever you enjoy and makes you feel good. I was a Greenkeeper for 28 years. A few years before I left we got a new gaffer and the whole dynamic changed, also lost my Dad and it made me start thinking about lots of things. I had to make a change then or I never would. That's when I went to work at a builders merchants and taught myself bricklaying. I knew it wasn't going to be a forever job and now work in the forest industry which is absolutely amazing 👍🏻

You nailed it brother! As a handyman and business owner who now subcontracts full time, everything you said here rings true. When youre out on your own, especially in the trades, you never clock out. Nowadays i let my foreman find the jobs, do the bids and invoices, source materials, and handle most client facing parts of the job. I just show up, do the work, clock out and leave work at work. I absolutely love it. Cheers mate!

I am a educated person and I worked as a cleaner for a long time during my studies. I really enjoyed it because the job gave me freedom to think, I would be cleaning all day but I could listen to podcasts, think about philosophy etc. When you get into jobs that require lots of thinking that is something that's taken from you. They take over your whole mind and you can't take a break from it. Being able to switch off after your job, not worry about deadlines etc is the most freeing feeling to have.

Personally I love it and can’t ever see myself working for anyone, but you can never say never. Someone said to me you may love doing it now, but as a business you will end up hating it because you will have the additional pressure of find the work to keep going and will stop enjoying something you love doing.

Had a similar debate with one of my colleagues. Happiness and value are relative measures. Posession of things don't make you happy, but being able to do what you want to do - does, as you feel you're exercising your will power. Also as a labourer you get immediate feedback from the work you do - the wall is raised, which is satistying. As a middleman you may only speak, and at some point fool yourself that a wall was raised by somebody thanks to you. Life is for living. All the best!

Yeah, this is real wisdom. I'm a chippy: I decided to go it alone, and it's a different world. The stress of sourcing jobs, pricing them, chasing money and keeping up with the volume of work when you've got it is all-consuming. There seems to be built in pressure to work for yourself in construction. I felt bad for a long time for saying it wasn't for me, but in the end, life is just too short. Look after your family, feel happy, enjoy your life. Good man, well said.

People that are good or bad with business are driven by money, by hustling, by finding ways to make it work.... They are different breed.... they have characteristics that I just don't see in simple laborers (I am simple laborer myself). I call it "I'll find a way, I have no shame" attitude. They have ups and they have failures. You have nothing to explain or apologize for but I appreciate the video. You said it yourself you are not driven by large sums of money but being content. Being happy with who you are and what you have. Having a comfortable life right now with great future ahead. You have worked hard to get where you are it hasn't been gifted to you. What more can you realistically wish for? You have tried business, maybe you didn't give it your best. But I think you realized that the sacrifices that would need to be made to give it your best would not align with who you are and what you value in life... you got nothing to regret.... you want to try it again - you can do it. Remember one time in the past you were hoping to be where you are now! You are still young and your perspective might change maybe you find a love of your life that will help you grow or encourage you to do your own business again, this time smarter and with help... so together you could build even better life. Things could easily change. Maybe you get some acquaintance that tells you some shit and it all just clicks and you gonna go try again. Maybe an injury (hopefully not) that forces you a little bit more to go into a leadership and business man role to continue living the life you want. Anything can happen. (I'm probably your age so take this advice or leave it, up to you.) We are not all the same. If we all become business owners whos gonna actually get shit done? Now the price of actually getting shit done is a different topic for another day.

If you can get paid for doing a job you are good at, but most importantly ENJOY, then that's pure gold. Keep hold of it with both hands for as long as you can. The sheer amount of people who don't enjoy their time at work, and therefore the biggest part of their lives is huge. If you enjoy what you do, you have something very precious indeed. And if you prefer being employed to being self employed ('free'), then that's great. Everyone is different, and let's be thankful we can pick and choose what route we go down. All power to you mate!

This is the first video I have seen from your content and while I get the idea that I think you didn’t do this video as a motivational video, it actually is very motivational. I think too many people, myself included, get hung up with the idea that when you’re own boss, life becomes easier and more enjoyable. But it’s not always the case. I was a self-employed PT for 10 years and I loved it, but now I’m a farm labourer and have been since the start of Covid, and actually I’m probably happier in a way. There’s very little stress.
