Today I went to a bookstore and there was a Neopets cookbook. The recipes were 90% terrible or “no human would make this” but aesthetically it was 10/10, gorgeous full page color and art and clearly whoever made those food abominations tried real hard to make things visually right. The Haunted Hummus was sculpted to have an irl spooky face in it. I would like to thank the Neopets cookbook for making me (a 28 year old adult) look like a freak as my dad stood behind me wondering why someone would have a recipe for a Plain Omelette and why it looked SO terrible

I left when they converted all the pets. They took some very expressive designs with a lot of good art for body language, and turned them into paper doll puppets for the sake of dress-up with expressions slapped on like stickers, and I just didn't find that as interesting. As someone who played the alpha of the game they were working on (I'm surprised they let people who didn't financially support the Metaverse get their hands on it) it seemed like the foundation of something that could be really cool if it wasn't steeped so heavily in normalizing cryptocurrency. It seems like they're repurposing the assets for their new game World of Neopets which I'm tentatively excited to play as someone who still regularly logs into the site. I really do hope they can pull it back from its abysmal state and give us the quality of life updates we've been begging for, including maybe better implementing UCs though I'm not sure they ever will.

I would bet real money, that this is just an attempt to still wring cash out of the userbase, but they've seen that using the word NFT will get them slaughtered by the community. Mark my words, this project - if it even comes out - will be yet another cash grab. The guy responsible for the NFTs in the first place, now has even MORE control over neopets. I guarantee, this will only continue down the same path, this time with a new coat of paint, with the flaws more carefully hidden from the public eye. People will be taken advantage of. i’ve recently gotten back into neopets and i can definitely see improvement. a lot (not all, but a lot) of the games have been converted to html5 and work on desktop and mobile, a lot of the pages have been made mobile friendly, and it overall still feels like i’ve come home. there are ads now but i don’t find them to be intrusive and they don’t make sound which is nice. there’s a paid option to remove them but im it’s not worth doing so cause they can be adblocked worth going back to

I remember a couple of years ago, someone from the staff appeared in a Polygon video about the Neopets dark market and even back them they were talking about accepting that the loyal adult fandom were the core audience by now, since they couldn't really compete with games like Roblox. I suppose it's an idea that has been going around on the team for a while even despite the recent flops

In 2021 i wrote to Neopets for help getting my old account back, and to my absolute shock, a full year later they did it! Over the course of 2022-2023 i've watched it go from a broken down ghost town of a site to taking tiny baby steps, little by little, in the right direction. A lot of the broken maps and links are fixed now, and thanks to Ruffle most of the old games work again! I just played Pterattack for the first time in 15 years. I even managed to get one of my old high school friends to play with me again. Maybe the community can actually rebound a bit.
