That’s what gets me too. Like, the only difference between it and following the dude’s regular social media accounts is that you’re… paying actual money for the off chance that he’ll acknowledge you. Even stuff like Cameo doesn’t bother me because you’re paying for something personalized and actors/musicians/etc have bills to pay too, but an app that’s functionally the same as any free social media account except you can pay to “super like” things is scummy imo

In my opinion this is 100% on the devs for seemingly not knowing ANYTHING about how the internet works. Even putting aside the hilarious amounts of impersonation and shitposting, why would you not have heavy moderation on a space that's just meant for interacting with celebrities? There should be heavy content filters and strict moderation on by default. It's also a tiny bit on jeremy renner too, he looks like a total dumbass for putting his image in the hands of these completely inept devs.

“A freak accident situation” it was because Jeremy Renner was charging his fans large amounts of money in exchange for essentially a depop OF with one blurry 144p video of Jeremy on it that occasionally waved at them. The first person I saw hyping up the Jeremy Renner app was, hilariously, the bassist for the band Vampire Weekend, who Danny and Drew quoted the tweet of in their video, but he was focused more on how Jeremy Renner was focusing on using the Jeremy Renner app to promote Jeremy Renner's debut album, The Medicine. This inspired me to join the Jeremy Renner app for two of the silliest Jeremy Renner-centric weeks on the internet I've ever experienced. Some of the other Jeremaniacs and Rennheads took to the music quickly, praising Jeremy Renner's vocal performance on Jeremy Renner's many posts about it on the official Jeremy Renner app, but (and no offense to Jeremy Renner) I found Jeremy Renner's debut album, The Medicine, to be largely derivative of Imagine Dragons, with songs like "The Main Attraction" by Jeremy Renner, following that anthemic "white guy scream-singing" that seems like it was genetically engineered in a lab to sell trucks.

These celeb interaction apps were always strange. I never got why people would even join them. It goes off the idea that fans would be "closer" to their fav celebrity but if anything it feels dystopianly the furthest thing ever from interacting with the celebrity. Its so obvious for most people that its run by someone else and the whole in app purchases feel scammy. Overall the most inauthentic form of celebrity interactions that puts a bad taste in your mouth with the celebrity (wanting that cash grab) and the company running it. The closest thing youll get to a notice is by normal apps everyone else uses and even then most famous peoples accounts are also run by other.

@Darkfyyre
@Darkfyyre Жыл бұрын
@@siegwardinspirit i definitely feel like the two aren't mutually exclusive. it absolutely was a lazy cashgrab, and this definitely was inevitable as a direct result of the app developers' laziness and lack of care. having said that, to the users and fans, it was also a special place, and they were just minding their own business, and some might even have been aware that the app in concept sucked but the fun they were having was harmless enough. therefore, when the shitstorm kicked off, it was the ending the app deserved, but not an experience the users deserved. i've also heard that employees and moderators struggling to deal with the trolling had a very stressful time, and that sucks. basically, it's both. the app was bad, in concept and execution. it didn't deserve to exist. it preyed on the parasocial relationship, and Renner holds part of that blame. but, the fans are both victims of the app preying on them, and victims of the trolling, and i don't ascribe to the callous opinion that they deserved it for being stupid or cringe or whatever just because their niche interest doesn't appeal to everyone. the only people who walked away from this feeling great were the trolls, and the un-invested audience enjoying the show. i can admit that i find some of those trolling posts very funny! and they were. but i can also feel empathetic towards the people who were just chilling out, using the app as intended. i just feel like the nuances of this situation are being very overlooked, and that's a shame.

@@Darkfyyrecall me cynical, but the employees and moderators absolutely had it coming. They took a job at a company that was entirely built around exploiting vulnerable people. I understand that people gotta make ends meet but that doesn’t absolve them of them of all responsibility. The fans didn’t deserve mockery, but I genuinely believe that internet trolls mocking the fans is less damaging that what Renner was doing to them by having this app and intentionally perpetuating parasocial relationships, though I’m sure the people who were victimized by this app don’t see it that way.

I remember being in high school and someone in gym class told me about this app when we were supposed to be running laps. I couldn’t believe that somebody could be so self centered to have a whole app dedicated to people worshiping them. This was also during the height of my kpop phase and while I never got super crazy about kpop it’s certainly kinda ironic that I though Jeremy Renner fans were insane.

I actually feel bad for the fans who actually used it. It seems like it was just a badly made money making scheme but honestly if there were people who enjoyed it I don't see how that's worse than using twitter or facebook or whatever other hell hole social media app. And having a place and community you enjoy being harrassed into none existence by trolls is pretty sad. Hopefully the people who used it found other communities that aren't as scammy and that won't be mass harrassed by people.

I vaguely remember hearing about the Jeremy Renner app, but I didn’t know what exactly happened, and after watching this vid, the whole thing felt like Pool’s Closed 2.0 🤣 Also, you gotta talk about the Taylor Swift App, it was also an app made for super fans, and it promised that Taylor Swift herself was gonna interact directly with people and post app-exclusive content (just like the Jeremy Renner App lol), and there was even app-specific emojis called, “Taymojis”. I didn’t use the app very much, I only unlocked a few “Taymojis”, and I never got to talk to Taylor 😔. From what I heard, it seemed like the app became overrun with creeps and Taylor barely used the app.

This is a great video! And I understand your logic about how the app could have limited names to prevent impersonation, but as an app developer I do want to say this is probably not good practice. Celebrities do not have a monopoly on names. You have to be able to assume that someone out there could be named Jeremy Renner, with no relation to the celebrity save sharing the same first/last name. That said, there are ways they could have prevented impersonation! Moderation, like you suggested, could root out anyone who uses that name + his likeness as impersonators. Also, they could have made some unique identifier for the actual Jeremy Renner, like how twitter used to use blue checkmarks for verified celebrities (before twitter blue wrecked that).

Izzzyzz I respect your dedication to your research but there is one gaping hole that you have left unaddressed. The person who replied to Stefan Heck's "I will be looking at porno in my computer" was not simply a disapproving Renner fan, but was actually Stefan's good friend and fellow twitch streaming partner Jesse Farrar. While I can't speak to the veracity of his love of Renner, JF is known for playing the much hated Marvel Snap, so I assume he is quite the Ren-head. They're the GoOffKings on twitch and I highly recommend their extremely chaotic streams.
