Back with another J.C. Higgins, the Model 28 in .22 Long Rifle from 1951. Here we explore the patent drawings which seem to refute the common information online that this was originally a Remington patent. I believe it to be, after my novice research, originally a patent shared by Sears and High Standard.
It's a great .22 and runs perfectly. The Realistic Snap Caps that I use to test function cycled through so smooth.....it's just what you are looking for in a rimfire rifle.
Thanks for watching......

Interesting, I had a Remy 552 BDL. Had beautiful wood. Bought it at K-Mart for about 208 bucks about 1987. It would run shorts. Shot my ex brother in laws head light out with it. Decided I didn't have any business owning a gun and sold it😐

Sears did not settle for cheap stuff and back in the day they had a loyal following that would only buy Craftsman tools, their brand, as well as other Craftsman stuff. It was always known to be good quality. Thanks for tuning in.

I have a model 30, it is a great shooter. The scope is quite dirty inside butt it is cool so I am leaving it on for now. The sling still works great. It only comes out on sunny days.

Analysis of these patents is a big hobby of mine. It started by being fascinated with analyzing John Browning’s designs, and turned into checking out what everybody else did to try to be as good as him!

can you use short rounds in the model 28?

Nope. They won't even load from the magazine.

An absolute bargain. High Standard always made quality firearms. They might not have had French walnut stocks with hand checkering or deep glossy bluing, but the fitting and craftsmanship was excellent. Their target pistols were superb and highly desirable (and still are to collectors).

I agree and I'm keeping my eye out for others in this category....there are model 25, 29, 30, 31, 33, 34, 35 and 36 models out there....the 33 & 35 are pump action.

Yeah, might very well be. If Sears didn’t make rifles, they sure as hell didn’t make their own scopes.

Thanks for all your in depth research friend. It takes me several sittings to get through one vid but eventually I get to the end. You are one of my favorites. Its like a hang out at a bar in someones garage with guns all over the bar. Oh,,, and the whisky glass with a cigar burning, nice touch. Haha

Right? The plastic and aluminum ones never cycle like real rounds which does not work well for function testing. I will unselfishly take credit for suggesting the .22’s!

Hi from Australia, I got a model 28 in 1989 but in 1996 the Australian government banned anything semi auto unless it was registered for contract feral pest control. The government had a buy back scheme and once they acquired them all they put all the rifles through a crusher😢 .

Yeah, I kind of messed up when I said they didn’t make .22’s of their own in 1951….they did make .22 pistols under the High Standard name but no rifles. The founder, Carl Gustav Swebilius, is an interesting guy and has a sight that he invented named after him…..it’s featured in one of my older .22 gallery gun videos.

@@MilsurpGarage I think I might've saw that. I've only seen the HS 22 pump action and the HS sport king which is their version of the click clack/gill gun. If I was rich I would buy them all lol.

The trigger group drops out complete by knocking out the pin. Spray it off, hit it with a q-tip, clean the receiver, boom 💥. Good to go

Yeah, saw it wasn’t an issue in another video just this evening. Might be I was confusing it with another…..bought a slew of these old .22’s lately and definitely saw a warning about disassembly on one of them. This one reminds me of a Marlin Model 60. Not worth doing another video but it would have been really nice to confirm I was correct about the patents by matching up the mechanism.

@@MilsurpGarage - You think it wasn’t the 552?
@MilsurpGarage
@MilsurpGarage Жыл бұрын
Well, yeah.....the issue is who borrowed from who. Hard to believe Sears worked off a Remington patent when the patents don't reflect that by pulling and actually reading them. Also, the Remington 552 hit the streets in 1957.....six years AFTER the JC.Higgins model 28......seems to me Remington was working off a High Standard/Sears patent........ There is no doubt they are one in the same but I'm going to get one anyway when I come across one......just to confirm!

Nice to have an original J.C. Higgins scope but the optics are a bit hazy. It’s a standard rail size….throw a nice small modern rimfire made scope on there!
