i love how at the end of his verse he admits that he’s not doing as much as he could or should be doing. considering this is a time where every celebrity is just fighting to act like they’re doing everything they can for the cause so they don’t get criticised he openly says with that last line and throughout the track that he’s not as educated as he should be and is willing to learn more to be better

@@modestrocker1 TRUUUUUE. Yeh I get some of the defenses for J Cole but idk I'm just swayed by the fact that he has built his career off of being in the woke lane of modern rap. He's always touched upon social issues and it's a part of his discography and now he's basicaly wagging his finger at NoName and he just comes across as someone who doesn't understand why there is the frustration there is rn. As if he's one of the guys that will protest against the murder of George Floyd and then not be behind pushing for massive police reform so they actually protect us and not brutalize citizens? J. @ryates
@ryates 4 жыл бұрын
(i'm a white passing asian-american so take this how you will) i don't think he was being disrespectful or offensive, but there's a huge fissure in the left-thinking community and people who are hyper-aware of the injustice in almost every facet of society can feel like it's wasteful to use your platform to defend being slow to act on being politically enlightened. i think it would've made a lot more sense to talk to her one-on-one or just make the track about the harm of being so aggressive with her message to keep from having it be perceived as him just personally defending himself. that being said i do understand why he feels this way and his perspective is much more open-minded than half of America's so i don't take issue with it or anything, i just think it could've been executed differently. on the other hand, noname is really smart, but she's young, and there's no amount of left-wing literature or true american history you can read that'll teach you the emotional intelligence it takes to properly approach the situation she's found herself in. in her defense though, while i do think her methods are polarizing and attacking people w/ other beliefs hurts the spread of the message, it can be hard to stay focused on optics when the situation is so painfully personal.

I think what people are really upset about is that with all of the things going on, he chose to emerge from his slumber to criticize a black woman. In this time, and her whole point, was that people want to hear his voice on police brutality. That's the part people were upset about. Noname also responded and won this interaction IMO. Her track was way better.

The first time, you really got it. There were some brothers they cried and wondered if they were doing enough. A few White and Black women cried. One White lady who initially wanted to be a judge changed her mind and now swears, thru tears, that she is going to be a civil rights lawyer. One Black young man couldn’t finish his commentary because he was so emotional. This song made some people mad, sad, hurt, defensive, crowned Cole as Jesus son, the devil, endangered and a more. This demonstrates that the way you say things mattered. Twitter tried to cancel him, bloggers on KZbin and Facebook showed 95% love and appreciation. Your reaction was the what most bloggers got from the song. I previously thought that you couldn’t understand Cole because you were White, but you have proved me wrong.

Noname came to my college last year for a concert & she came on after B.o.b so pretty much everyone had left (lol I know). So she was essentially just performing to the Black Student Union & a hand full of white people who love hip hop & it was a really chill experience, but as it progressed it became more & more apparent that even tho there were maybe like 50 people there max, she was ignoring all the white people & performing solely to the black students there. & I’ve seen her comments before ab white people saying the n word when reciting the lyrics at her concerts but this was before she had made those comments & I can vouch that in this instance everyone was being respectful & just having a good time (I’m white btw so believe me if you want to lol). It was just really awkward when half of the crowd is being completely ignored & she’s like purposefully not touching white hands in the crowd lol & it was abundantly clear what was happening to both the white students & the black students there. Then she came out & made her statements saying she’s refusing to perform for white crowds, & although I respect the message in her music & her talent, I just lost respect for her. The people who need to hear her music the most are the people she’s attacking & goes out of her way to avoid. It’s like J Cole said in this song, she’s not trying to plant new seeds & she’s just preaching to the choir. Fighting hate with hate & only showing love to the people that already love & agree with you does nothing for progress. I don’t think she’s a valiant leader for hip hop of BLM even though she’s extremely well educated ab the subject because her approach completely misses the point
@thomassheeran6073
@thomassheeran6073 4 жыл бұрын
as another white person, you have to realize that she it’s her art, and who she feels comfortable sharing that with is hers to feel. if her art talks about black experience, or black women experience, it is easy to see why she would want to perform that art to these people. there are still a ton of black people who could learn from her music/voice I’m sure. also, just because you felt on the outside of something for the first time in your life, since you have the privilege of being white, does not mean you should “lose respect” for her. this is something that black people and poc go through every day of their lives. all i can do is appreciate her opinions, ideals, and learn from them, as well as read the books she suggests, coming from a very educated black women
@TzaTed
@TzaTed 4 жыл бұрын
Thomas Sheeran definitely a fair point about feeling on the outside & her being able to share her art with whoever it is that she chooses. & maybe I shouldn’t have said “lose respect” because I still appreciate her talent & artistry, but I definitely still disagree with the method. I definitely strive to be an ally & to see things from perspectives that I can never fully identify with, but in this particular case (& in my measly opinion), someone who’s demanding equality & unity aggressively yet refuses to do that themself shouldn’t be leading the charge
@TzaTed
@TzaTed 4 жыл бұрын
Thomas Sheeran also I would like mention that I thought I pretty clearly stated that she weirded out a majority of the people who were in the crowd & the atmosphere got really awkward. So it wasn’t just me “feeling on the outside for the first time in my life.” I understand the point but that kinda rubbed me the wrong way lol

I appreciate J Cole's sentiment about not knowing enough and not wanting to be talked down to, that's valid. But he's asking people (Specifically Noname in this case) to educate him on topics that we had to take the time to educate ourselves about. Just last year Noname was advocating for Black capitalism and entrepreneurship; people called her out for it and she went away, did the research, took the time and effort to understand and challenge her own perspective, came back with more informed opinions and now calls herself a radical communist; she even started a book club to encourage others to do the same! It's not about how she was raised or brought up, and even if it was, she's an adult now and she took the initiative to do the work. She did the exact thing for herself that Cole is asking others to do for him and others like him. So yes, he is right, he needs to do more and whilst I understand his sentiment, it is not up to people (Black women in this case) to continually educate others about stuff we had to learn ourselves. Black women have been screaming for decades to be heard and for others to understand, it's a burden to ask them to kindly feed you information when Google is free. If you want to argue about lack of education for young black people, then let's advocate for a systematic change there.
@TharinzZ
@TharinzZ 4 жыл бұрын
I think the point that J. Cole is making here is more about the way and tone that Noname is going about trying to influence people. He’s recognizing how intelligent she is and how important it is that she DID the research but doesn’t agree with how she’s doing it. She’s coming from a condescending mindset. Cole is trying to pull her out of her current methods of screaming into the like-minded void that is social media and help her understand how she can really impact society. Not everyone has the ability to educate themselves the way Noname took time off to do and that’s the point as well. With her understanding of capitalism and how it affects communities of color she should understand that and insert herself in ways that she can educate people that haven’t had the same opportunities as her. The potential for Noname to be a competent leader is unlimited and I think Cole is trying to guide her so she can be the best form of her self.
@doctorbongbong
@doctorbongbong 4 жыл бұрын
Its sad that he doesn't see how frustrating it is to have the struggles that you have researched diligently and addressed be downplayed due to tone. Especially when those issues relate to ones own identity. Acting like she has a responsibility to educate him and not be upset when there are so many resources for him to get clued up with is quite self centered imo

Just because Cole wants to be educated MORE ON THIS TOPIC doesn't mean he's clueless or wants the information hand fed to him. If you're gonna preach about something there's a way to do that without acting like the mans doesn't do shit because he hasn't tweeted BLM.

His message nor this situation has anything to do with Black women. No name just HAPPENS to be a black woman. The rationale behind his message in the song is to convey that the goal is for one to use his/her knowledge to educate the masses, not to weaponize that knowledge in a manner which is condescending, demeaning, etc. In turn, by weaponizing the said knowledge it could cause the recipients of that knowledge to become defensive; hence not being as receptive as need be to the knowledge.

Zephh` yeah, like I get where they are coming from that it’s not the best time to make a song like this considering all these other artists are dropping songs about what’s going on, but I don’t think people should be shaming him for just speaking his mind, it’s kinda of hypocritical that they’re fighting to speak the word but trying to silence someone with an opinion on something that he actually has a point on. I mean his entire discography speaks about these issues, it’s not like he’s been silent throughout the years... he’s one of the few rappers today that actually dedicated his career to spreading positivity and reflections. Like I said sure it may have been a bit of bad timing on Coles part but there’s no reason to shun him if he’s been vocal about these issues for his entire career as an artist

Optics wise, I understand why people are angry at Cole for "coming at" a black woman who is also an activist. With that said, I think J. Cole is right about what he is saying here. Saying things like "ACAB" and "Abolish police," things that Noname has said before, have very aggressive and off-putting rhetoric, even though the ideas behind the statements are valid and require attention.

i kind of disagree. i dont think i necessarily agree with noname et al, but i feel like if someone were to believe that id rather them say that and explain why they believe that then be disengenuous about it. i think cole agrees with those things, but thinks she should do it with a more polite tone. and i get why thats annoying, because it shouldnt be her job to mom people into believing what she believes. so like, say acab or abolish police, but get on their level when you say why.

I can understand what your saying about how you should approach people who disagree with you and I agree to an extent but some people are so far gone they don’t deserve someone’s time to explain things like racism to them like a child. If you are an adult who still doesn’t understand that we have systematic racism in this county I don’t know how much someone calmly explaining it will do because that person is lost and likely being purposefully obtuse.

Yeah we know there’s systemic racism but enlighten us on how do we stop it and move forward. Niggas don’t need racism explained to them. That’s not what Cole is talking about.
