A good discussion to have. I have more questions than answers. Is it possible to stop framing this as a war of US vs. THEM? Is it possible to have a sincere discussion about the US tax code--a code that has certainly protected academic institutions, religious institutions, private equity, venture capital, our largest companies, and citizens with the most assets? Is it possible to have an honest discussion about the failures and successes of the welfare state? Is it possible to have an honest discussion about how to enable the groups that have faced real prejudice, legal, and economic bias over at least the last two generations--the extreme poor, African Americans, Asian Americans, Native Americans, and women--without grossly un-enabling everyone else?

So let me get this straight. J.D. went from saying: the rural class lacks work ethic which is largely to blame for where it finds itself (unlike myself who "rose above" my circumstances to go to Yale), to :pro-BLM, woke (read unpatriotic) corporations are to blame for the forgotten middle class (and even though I went to the institutions and firms that exist in the same social world as these organizations, I'm just like you middle america). Listen, is corporate greed playing a role in undermining the stature of middle America. Yes, 100%, yes! Big corporations should be implicated DEEPLY, as should Reagan-era policies that supercharged the ability to do so. But is the problem with corporations that they are too "woke"? No, that is a red herring that tries to sidestep longstanding conservative fiscal policy and emphasize a culture war. Amazon treats it's largely lower class and/or black and brown workforce like human batteries. Major industrial corporations poison environments of predominantly black and brown communities. Major academic institutions underrepresent low-income communities and/or black and brown communities in their faculty and student population. There is a clear economic and racial line where the privileges of these institutions are not shared equally, but JD chooses to focus on corporate marketing rather than actual corporate action. It's disingenuous, dishonest, and inaccurate. He is not the savior of "Middle America" and he does not preach the gospel of rural America's development. Signed, a black guy from mid-town Indiana.
@noahboughdy2648 Жыл бұрын
Wokeness allows such companies to continue to treat their workers terribly under the guise that they're on the side of the angels. Mass immigration permits such companies to hire a compliant workforce that doesn't have the political capital to fight back. As far as corporate action goes, 15:55 is a great example. Here, a domino effect reaches American shores. If companies are penalized for offshoring jobs for exploitative labor, they have a greater incentive to stay in America. In return, American laborers have more leverage to demand better treatment. In the status quo, demands for better treatment can be evaded by offshoring.
