J Herbin 1670 - Emerald of Chivor - Ink Profile

In this video, we look at the unique beauty that is J Herbin 1670 - Emerald of Chivor. This ink has gold shimmer and red sheen/halo-ing/highlighting that is quite spectacular on Tomoe River Paper! It is a blue/green ink with more blue than green -- even so -- cameras and lights make it appear more blue than it looks to the eye = so I strongly suggest you obtain a sample! This ink is readily available at many fountain pen stores online.
I bought my samples (2 - 2ml) from Goutlet Pens:

In the video we look at this ink in 4 pens: Serendipity Hybrid with broad JoWo nib, Lamy Vista with fine Lamy nib, Jinhao 159 with 1.5 mm Goulet stub nib, and Moonman Mini Glass nib pen. We also take a look at a bath test result, chromatography, visual journal page and a 9 ink comparison panel. I will show a few alternatives if you like this color but don't need the shimmer!

I really love the addition of the comparison in your glass nib. It shows some color traits that I don’t see otherwise. I love Iroshizuku Ku-Jaku, and am so glad to see that this shows a similar color. I will definitely pick up a sample. Thank you for sharing! 🧡

Hi Casey - I like seeing how the inks do with the glass nib too - I learn a lot about the flowyness or lack thereof. (I guess the term may be viscocity?) It's funny how many samples of this ink I've gone thru - yet I don't get a bottle. Jet Pens has a 5 ml sample and that's about what I'd use for Christmas card I think. hmmm.... :)

I’m not into shimmer and sheening inks but I love to see what other people are doing with them. The visual journal was beautiful and I was blown away by how well the CVS Caliber paper showed off the ink. If I didn’t already have more paper than I need, I would get a notebook or two.

Hi gadgetstop321 - I have always shied away from shimmer inks too except for J Herbin Amethyst d' Loural - which I LOVE and have a bottle of. The more I use the CVS Caliber paper the more I am amazed at what it will handle. It doesn't like dry inks but as long as the ink is flowy and saturated enough it's really good!

Three cheers for stub nibs! Re: color accuracy, it's a sad fact of life in our digital world that between the camera and the monitor the viewer uses, there's a lot of room for error. I really appreciate how you call it out, I would never have guessed this ink has any green at all in it. That Rhodia paper bleed thru behavior is really odd, I have never seen that before except inks that bleed through on every other paper too.

@@ChrisSaenz13 I'm not sure if it makes me feel better or worse about Rhodia paper. On one hand the super-fast dry time can be a plus, but that bleed-thru is a high price to pay. I'm testing my inks and so far I haven't had any that behave this way on Rhodia. Must be something unique to this ink.

This is the ink that thought me the importance of paper! Lamy paper: glowing red, with a bit of soap in the ink it shifts colors based on your viewing angle Rhodia: slight hjnts I'd red Normal paper: ugly teal

I just started using this last week and realized I could let it sit and then get some of the ink without the shimmer gold particles, and it's fantastic just seeing the sheen, great color too!

Hi Planetina! Oh wow that Tangerine Shimmer name ... such a cool ink name! I hope you like the Emerald of Chivor. I've worked with several samples but only gotten bottles of Amethyste de l'Oural, and Kyanite du Nepal. (shimmer in the J Herbin line that is).

Thank you Chris for another wonderfully detailed review . I have used this ink and I'm surprised how it compares to some of the inks you put it up against , I really thought it was quite unique . In the writing the ferris wheel Press ink seems very similar looking at your comparisons & surprisingly similar to colourverse gravity wave in the colour swatches ( if you disregard the simmer)although that seems a little darker. If you'd like more Emerald of Chivor let me know i'd be happy to send you a large sample, I have a bottle. :-)

Hi Matthew -- I am wondering if the glass nib sort of takes some of the uniqueness off the table so to speak. I'm not sure. It is a good way to see the base color and find one that isn't shimmer - but gives us the color we're looking for!!! But I'm on the fence about using that glass nib too much!

Yes, it is showing up really blue on camera! Love this ink, no problems with clogging, one of my top 5 inks.

For a long time now I have heard this ink praised in pen reviews, but none has been able to show the wide range of qualities you have displayed here. It clarifies just why it has had so much positive attention. I am always hesitant about shimmer inks, though, and would remain concerned about pen cleaning, especially if the ink has been in the pen for a while and not been used. Another viewer confirms that he has used it a lot and it doesn't clog the nib - but I'd remain a bit worried where a pen is laid aside for a few days. I would probably use it only for special occasions,like festivals and celebrations. As always, thank you for your review

Hi Margret - the shimmer ink I have most experience with is J Herbin Amethyst de l'Oural and I keep it in a Lamy Safari Broad nib - writing with it often - and have had no clogging or cleaning issues - I'm good about cleaning it out every 2 weeks - but I always write it dry because I like it so much! I too am quite leery of shimmer inks!!! :)

Huh the cafe note tomoe river and the other tomoe river paper look so different. Cafe note sheens way more! Is that just the camera or irl too? It's confusing how thr same paper looks different in that notebook

Hi Amelia - the cafe note paper is thinner and does display the inks slightly different although I do prefer the standard 52 gsm loose sheets I'd been buying at Goulet over the years to the cafe note paper but I love the number of pages in the cafe note and the paper is good. It is confusing and this ink in particular acts funny in terms of what lighting does to it!!!!

@@ChrisSaenz13 I keep my TWSBI ECO M Nib inked up with it and have never had a problem! No drying out, no clogging issues! I think that J Herbin shimmering inks are the best behaved!

Hi Sarah - it was a sample vial and yes. Makes me wish I had a bottle of it so I could do my own agitating/shaking before review. It is subject to human error for sure.

I haven't had any bleeding with Rhodia Premium paper, but it goes right through the Rhodia staple bound, and occasionally bleeds just a bit with the Rhodia letter pads, if I use a wet, broad nib or wide stub nib. It doesn't bleed or ghost at all on the Premium,, at least with my pens. It doesn't bleed or ghost on any of my Rhodia, if I use my standard pens, but then I lose some of the color effects that makes this ink special. This seems to be an ink that's made for Tomoe River. I hate the ghosting any ink leaves on 52 GSM Tomoe, but this ink is absolutely perfect when matched with the 68 GSM Tomoe. The colors, the sheen, everything shows u beautifully, and I get no ghosting at all. Oddly, I have some Pen Gear 5.5x8.5 binder paper I picked up at Walmart, and this ink works almost as well on it as it does on 68 GSM Tomoe. I guess you just never know how a paper will work until you try it.

Hi James - I'm more and more loving the 68 gsm Tomoe River paper! The Pen and Gear paper is showing up more and more in pen pal letters too -- a real game changer! I'm still trying to figure out why Rhodia isn't my favorite paper. It works so good with some of my more saturated inks that flow super well but I guess I've just used too much TR paper and I got spoiled.

Hello Chris, I know I am kind of late to the " ink party" XD, but I just ordered myself a bottle. They have it now on amazon for only like 15 pounds. I admit I bought this specific ink a couple of years ago, and I didn't like it because mine never happened to look like on the pictures of other people showcasing it. I was very new to the fountain pen world back then, and I mean like " emerald green" new, and I actually proceeded to ruin the ink by trying to mix it with other blue inks, because I really didn't like how it looked back then and I was trying to make it more appealing to me. Eventually ended up ( have a guess XD ) throwing it away. I know, a big sin and just all bad from the start to the end, and then I also found out ( too late ) I was quite possibly using it on the wrong type of paper, so the properties didn't show at all. So anyway, I'm just really happy to have a second chance and get me a bottle for a lot cheaper than that first one was, and now that I am more aware of the differences in the paper and pens I feel I can finally ( hopefully ) make a good use out of this ink and enjoy it as it was meant to be enjoyed. The first one I got for nearly 30 pounds here in UK so the fact it's now down to a half price was something I couldn't pass up. I did also hear however regarding with this specific ink, that the batches may differ and some people may get more glitter and less sheen or vice versa. What do you think? On the video, the Clairefontaine and the Cafe Note showed the most red and shimmer - to me anyways :) I say Clairefontaine for the win! I wonder if you have a bad piece of paper in the Rhodia.. interesting

Hi bumblesby - every once in awhile something weird like that happens with paper! :) I do really like Emerald of Chivor but I've yet to find the really best nib for it in my collection. And I keep getting samples but not a bottle. I use the J Herbin Amethyste de l'Oural regularly and love it in my Lamy Safari Broad nib.

I've used it in a lot of pens and have never once had it cause problems with flow. And this includes even running it in my pocket pen, a Kaweco ART Sport with their mini converter!

Hi Donna -- I think this ink probably isn't for everyone! Generally, I like silver shimmer a lot better than gold! I like this one but have not gone for a full bottle even though I'm on my 4th sample. :) I have yet to buy a bottle of Pilot Iroshizuku ink - I do like the Ku Jaku it's beautiful!
