Abrams is a student of Spielberg and Lucas. His philosophy for storytelling most likely mirrors theirs- the good news/bad news pacing scenario. Like so: Good news, Indy- you found the cave! Bad news, Indy- you've got to go through a bunch of traps! Good news, Indy- you got past all of the traps! Bad news, Indy- you missed one! Good news, Indy- you escaped! Bad news, Indy- there's a tribe of pissed-off natives chasing you! Etc, etc, etc...

Force awakens only works because most of the characters were already pre-definied, JJ really isn't good at building character through his directing, only chase/action scenes.
@JohnnyBRad8 жыл бұрын
+Simon Kempe I would say he's certainly great bringing new life to already established series. MI:3, The first Star Trek, and The Force Awakens, and even Cloverfield (although he only produced it) was sort of a reboot of the big monster movie genre. He's good at just giving it a fresh retooling then sending it on its way. He doesn't handle maintaining franchises as well. Although I am a fan of Super 8, but that really is just the ultimate homage to Spielberg.
@simonkempe12128 жыл бұрын
+Nick Haddad Yes he is good at capturing a "mood" in a scene/movie. But the reality is that should not be enough for him to get the title of "next spielberg" and he has been given so many opportunities to do great, but it always falls a little short.
@starlinguk8 жыл бұрын
+Simon Kempe He co-wrote the Force Awakens script with Lawrence Kasdan, though.

I think he is great at building characters. Yes, the force awakens by far isn't his best work, but when you look at his Star Trek films or Super 8 - they have great charakters, at least in my view. And I feel like there are few people that manage to tell HUGE stories still centered about flawed, loveable characters as well as JJ.

The thing with Abram's lens flare is that it's not organic. Lens flare from the old days was there because they hadn't become as skilled in blocking stray light into the lens. When you saw flares, it was from existing light on the set or on location. But Abrams forces it unnaturally with guys on the side, shooting a flashlight into the lens for the sole purpose of producing a flare. Very lame. If he's so enamored with flare, he should just yank off the lens hood and let it happen naturally.
@nellstreitz69648 жыл бұрын

JJ Abrams turned Star Wars into a cash grab
@30seconds2impact8 жыл бұрын
+Jeremy Seinfeld Actually George Lucas did that years ago.
@changstein8 жыл бұрын
TourDeForce He already had more money than he knew what to do with...The prequels were just a poor attempt by a senile, old genius. But you can't say they were to please the financial backers and studios. Abrams has effectively made the new movie completely derivative, wholly unoriginal, and just plain stuffy. The music, the writing, the acting are all completely out of sync and an insult to what star wars once was.
@30seconds2impact8 жыл бұрын
+Jeremy Seinfeld Well the prequels sure as hell weren't just an indie pet project by Lucas, there was plenty of merchandising and marketing involved, hence they were also a cash grab from a corporate/shareholder perspective. Abrams didn't sellout on anything that wasn't sold already (no pun intended).
@wolfgangmozart1878 жыл бұрын
I'd have cheerfully accepted the lens flare overuse had Jar Jar Abrams not written each of the classic characters like an idiot. Han has de-volved back into what he was in A New Hope and has grown in no way. Leia is not a jedi? Senseless. Luke is a running coward the entire film. Ok... why people like this again?
