I've finally reached Keelung, a small harbour city on the Northeast coast of Taiwan. In fact, I love Keelung. I've often thought I might like to move here from Kaohsiung someday. Until of course, everyone tells me it rains non-stop. But during the three days I spent there, it was sunny and blue skies. Here's a video I made on the first day, where I explored some of the more historical aspects of the city, with particular focus on the old japanese-era military bunkers and tunnels, many of them now abandoned.
Join me next week as I explore Keelung's night market, the harbour, and Jiufen!

I want to share a bit of my perspective on this clip here from Dallas. Despite the look, 基隆is actually one of the most prosperous town in Taiwan. It looks crappy because 1. It was developed much earlier than Taipei thus the land ownerships chopped up in small pieces. 2. The terrain is steep and the township is quite small. 3. Keelung averages 200+ rainy days in a year and buildings aged much quicker. Anyway, In the hay days of Taiwan exports era, Keelung was one of the most vibrant harbors in Asia. The people there are exposed to western culture from early days and they are well educated and I would even say sophisticated. Thanks for the clip, good job as usual.

My great-grandfather took my pre-teen grandfather here, back when「基隆」which means auspicious foundation, was still called 「鷄籠」(Chicken Coop), because the fishing was so much better than to Fijian coast that “temporary” migrants didn’t return home. Your spectacular shot shows what a naturally protected harbor (from typhoon and pirates) it is. For this reason railroad building in Twain started here to serve the port. During Japanese colonization (1895-1945, hard to realize Taiwan and Hokkaido formally joined Japan the same year) Keelung became the port that supplied rice to the mother country, due to the extra annual rice harvest, and especially during the desperate days of WW2. For that reason Americans targeted Keelung more than any other part of Taiwan. In grade school, my father woke just after 4 a.m,. school started around 5 and ended before 8, and like clockwork, American bombers dropped ordnance over his home by 9. In a bomb shelter like the one you walked through, my father taught himself to read in English during the air raids. In the 1960s Keelung gradually lost to your home of Kaohsiung the lack of space to containerize, which is also closer to the factories in the southern plain as the export economy took off. Thanks for a most wonderful video.

my wife and I stopped there for a couple of nights on our August 2018 around island tour, We stayed at a little place literally next to the cruise ship parking something like E-Coast hotel, but I had scoped out several small hotels in that area for backups since we didn't make reservations- just walked up to the various hotels on the trip and asked them what rate they had for us. (often quite a good discount over their full rate, most nights we stayed for $50-$85 dollars even in some places where the full rack rate was at $200 or more. (USD thinking/ sorry not thinking in Canadian Dollar terms) Keelung is a nice place.

Yes, as you said, many Canadians may not know Ontario. Rev. Mackay; but almost no one in the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan does not know Dr. Mackay from Canada. He has made great contributions to the early church, medical care and education in Taiwan. Among the Canadians of the Presbyterian Church, if anyone is involved in the affairs of the Taiwanese Presbyterian Church in Canada, they may know the relationship between Mr. George Leslie MacKay and Taiwan.

That air raid shelter despite its historical, it was only opened recently, and at 3:37, that lantern shown you were at Keelung shrine-formerly built by Japanese but unfortunately when nationalist came, they torned it down and left with just the lantern and changed to Chinese style temple, Keelung does give you that slight depressing feeling as the city due to geographic reason, gets cloudy days and rainy days more than anywhere in Taiwan.
