Every other writer that came afterwards never quite made me enjoy a run as much. The JMS run is honest to god one of my favorite spider-man eras. People tend to discount it because of the admittedly bad Sins Past and One More Day arcs; but those are just much the fault of Marvel editorial and Joe Quesada. Arcs like Coming Home, Until The Stars Turn Cold, and Book of Ezekiel are amazing. We got a grounded mature Peter Parker, the revelation to Aunt May, and probably the best bond between the married Peter and MJ. After the god awful 90s Spidey comics (clone saga, final chapter, that dumb 1998 relaunch by Mackie and the thankfully now non-Canon Chapter One) You hit all the nails on the head in this vid, and Odin bless ya for it!

I remember when a new writer was announced how I hoped for a change and I remember thinking "One issue. I took the guy one single issue to get the character back on track." Not a return to the status quo or anything, but definitely a return to the core of the character. His time as a teacher was a great step forward from his time at the Bugle, and what he did with Aunt May should have never been undone. His first story arc was one of the few times a writer has ever been able to achieve such a rug pull while still staying true to the character in my opinion. Great video!

Straczynski run were the first spiderman comics I ever got to lay my hands on in my country. And I got to say I wasn't happy about it but it's mostly because I was probably not the target reader for that story at the time. The definitive spiderman of my childhood was spiderman from the 90s cartoon, Raimi movies and games. So when they finally started publishing Spider-man comics I really really wanted to experience the classic villains and usual Peter struggles but instead I got some midlife crisis feeling mystical spider story and some weird villains of the week. I collected the issues anyway, it was the only thing I could get but it was bittersweet. On one hand I got to read the stories of my favorite superhero on the other I got to experience Sins of the Past as a kid... I should probably go back and read all those issues I collected again maybe I would better connect with them now as I was only 12 when I started reading that run.

I kind of left around sins past, the other era but returned for his civil war tie in issues (which might be the stand out of that run and even that crossover). Jms seems like a guy with a backbone who actually has life experience and compare that to marvel writers now whose only life experience is arguing identity politics on Twitter.

How have I never heard of this side of Peter Parker before? A high school Teacher! That's so perfect, I've only ever seen him as a teen or "collage age" kid. A post teen? Anyway, a young adult Spiderman sounds really great, like a Peter C. Parker for Spiderverse. I'd also watch Tom Holland play it, either way. 10 year time skip in the MCU, bring in Morgan Stark, introduce young avengers.

When you mentioned his name, I thought there's no way the creator of Babylon 5 also wrote Spider-Man comics. Yet here we are. He sounds like a legend. B5 remains my favorite sci-fi series, and that's saying something. I am truly amazed by all he has done, and overcome. He's admirable even more than the characters he wrote, because he and his accomplishments are real.

The facts that you have this many subs with 4 vids tells me one thing. You’re gonna blow up and your content deserves it.

I feel really lucky because hardcover books of this run started coming out in Brazil right when I was getting into comics, and they’re really so good, with all the relationship stuff and Peter being a teacher, but what I really loved was when he was fighting Morlun and called aunt May, because it was so heartbreaking how he wanted to tell her that what was going on, but he couldn’t so he just told her how much he loved her. Another moment I loved was the “last stand” moment, because that was my favorite suit from the game and I really wanted to know where it was from and I coincidentally got the comic in which it showed up

The "Try and retcon this, Joe" thing from the beginning was hilarious, I actually laughed out loud.

Love your little homage to Peter and MJ at the end. Breaks my heart to say this but sounds like as long as Quesada is running Marvel Comics they will never be together again. Makes me wanna walk up and down the Empire State building with a sign that says, “Peter and MJ forever!!!!”

Anyone know if Linkara has done a special episode celebrating their Reunion? He usually saves Spider Man for his Milestone episodes but I was curious if he’s done it already.

Great video Alex! I have been a JMS fan from Babylon 5 and didn't even know he was behind so many other stories. He has such a great mind for telling a story! I will finish Becoming Superman, I have the audiobook and just haven't been able to get into it. I will now.

wow. your uncle is JMS? so jealous. but yeah, i still have the comics from this run. it's still my favorite run of spiderman ever.

I have the issue where he helps a boy who stole his dads gun. (its called Vibes). You can really tell the dynamic between peter and mj in that one and little stories like this one really add to the way he writes spiderman. Love the video btw.

Kudos! 👏 I’m touched that somebody on KZbin appreciates JMS’ run for all the things he did. Joe Straczynski’s run alongside Peter David’s all too brief return to Spidey on FN Spider-Man & Aquirre-Sacasa on Sensational (with Fraction’s farewell to the character as we knew him annual) was the last time I remember Peter Parker as the one I grew up with. It was an execrable downhill torrent of shite for the character from there on out. Hickman’s brief handling of Pete in the early issues of Future Foundation was the only glimpse of the True Spidey since Fat Joey shat all over Spider-Man’s 45 year history with OMD.

Great reminder of how the JMS Spider-Man run was one of the highlights of my teenage years. The fact that he also created Babylon 5, which is my favorite show of all time, makes him a hero in my book, even if he did write *those* comics. Rising Stars and Jeremiah is also worth a mention.

Really love this, I am getting the omnibus for this run soon. I would love to hear about Todd's run.

It's a shame that the greatness of his run is mired by a few storylines pushed on in by editors. It perfectly captured what made Spider-Man great and I loved Peter as a science teacher. I still haven't forgiven Civil War for causing it to end.
