Pavao Masic is the only cembalist I've heard who seems to understands Bach's sudden descent into a very dark place, his struggle to emerge from it, and his eventual re-emergence into the light (to be welcomed back by the other players)

I see what you mean. That’s an interesting way to interpret that part of the score and it makes sense. Yes, Pavao Masic is outstanding.
