"... Hard to explain what I mean ..." ; No, it obviously isn't - every word was as crystal clear (to me) as that incredible music that Bach wrote (in his own manuscript - for all those instruments & vocalists) and also rewrote (or had copied by his students) so it could be rehearsed and performed in public to huge worshiping congregation audiences - probably the weekend after it was first written ! Thank God & Bach that we still have hugely talented performers that eagerly seek out his music and keep it alive for us three hundred years later. It makes me weep for joy.

what's wild is that he wasn't even popular. In fact, his chorale-preludes on organ were often complained about because they were "too complicated" and "obscured" the melody or cantus firmus. So even though he was moderately popular among musicians, it wasn't until like... a century after his death that he got the recognition he deserved, when Mendelssohn "revived" his music in concerts, when complex counterpoint was a lot more popular in the Romantic era.

I discovered Bach--or Bach discovered me--when I was an amateur chorus singer in the Oberlin Musical Union at Oberlin College when I was a student there with no idea yet that I was heading to a theological education and pastoral career. It was the Christmas Oratorio, two Passion, and the B Minor Mass that awakened me, a life-long church goer with my family, to the possibility that God and "this Christian thing" might be real. Bach obviously knew it was! I wish I knew more about how it came to be so powerfully real for him.

That's how I hear it too. I (we) had the great privilege of singing the Bach B Minor Mass under the baton of Christoph von Dohnanyi, and he told us in dress rehearsal, we are going to do this "Old School" or what they may now call "Old Fashion" Bach. But that's how he heard it, and that has always been my ear for it: such as Otto Klemperer with Christa Ludwig et al., and the Philharmonia recordings. Grand, elegant, richly imagined and cathedral-like in amplitude. If that was good enough for Otto K, it's good enough for John E. Nothing in the current recordings, of all those that I've heard, at least, stands up in spiritual impact and grandeur to so many of the mid-20th century interpretations/recordings, and Bach deserves that "scope" to be heard for all that he is. Like another Klemperer collaborator, George Malcolm on keyboards and his "Angel" recordings.
@davidcallahan28325 жыл бұрын
@@johnervin8033 I would agree that the trend among many interpretations of Bach and other baroque composers is to overcompensate for past sins. The music that emerges is thin, fleet, and idiosyncratic. I hope that by revisiting the versions you mention as well as the breakthrough interpretations of Nikolaus Harnoncourt, which have to my ear withstood the test of time, future interpreters will be better able to hop up into saddle without ending up on the other side of the horse.
@johnervin80335 жыл бұрын
David Callahan, nicely said. Yes, that is close to my perspective. I have indeed heard some things in the past quarter century that have some of the old school grandeur, but it has notably and glaringly thinned. I think Beethoven's may be applied, to strike or sing a wrong note is insignificant, but to play without passion is inexcusable. Lorca wrote a great essay about that, duende. CvD also added in our dress rehearsal, "Don't sing the holy parts of his Mass bloodlessly. Bach had, what, 20 children?" And then came the downbeat for the Credo. Word 2 Wise. Heifetz and Friedman did a 50s duet for the Bach double violin. That was an example of greatness marred somewhat by too much "rubato" etc. I grew up with that as one of my Gospel readings. It wasn't til I heard one that was incandescently passionate but restrained that I realized that Jascha had gone too far!

Perfect for my Sonntag morning during this Covid time. God bless and keep your music playing
That's simply outstanding! I particularly like the tenor aria (and his trill was just perfect). And can't help miss the late Aldo Baldin...he would also have applauded this rendition.

The incredible sinfonia here overshadows the rest of the cantata a bit, to say the least.
Magnificent music, outstanding performance! Thanks for sharing.

There are many professional choral groups in the US which sing Bach’s works. I’ve sung all Bach’s major works and many cantatas. I live in a large city in eastern Missouri. One church uses complete cantatas in worship services throughout the year. In original languages, German or Latin.
