Artist: Francesco (Teopini classical guitar)
Why transcribe and perform the sonatas and partitas for solo violin on the guitar? It is surely the works themselves that provide the justification; their indestructible melodic poetry and their rich implied counterpoint at which the original violin can only hint.
Many guitarists have already gone where more cautious spirits would fear to tread and made their own transcriptions; this new version carries the imprimatur of David Russell, one of the most internationally acclaimed guitarists of his generation, who writes that Francesco Teopini ‘plays with a beautiful sound, faithfully recorded. His interpretation shows a deep understanding of these major works.’
In a useful booklet-note, Teopini himself notes that these works are now standard repertoire for guitarists, even mandatory for the sake of personal development, as perhaps Bach is for every musician regardless of instrument. His arrangement is relatively discreet, adding just a few more bass notes to amplify chords in movements such as the famous Chaconne which is the climax of the cycle. Elsewhere he has borne in mind the art of the clavecin, which no less relevant to the guitar as an instrument of Bach’s time than the original violin. There is naturally greater opportunity for ornamentation, which Teopini takes with discretion.
Italian by birth, Teopini himself is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music in London, currently resident as a teacher and performer in Hong Kong, with a repertoire ranging from Bach through the Classical Spanish repertoire to contemporary works, several of which he has commissioned and premiered by composers including Gian Carlo Mantovani and Fausto Tuscano .

While all Baroque music is flexible enough to be adapted to virtually any forces, it seems especially interesting how Bach never seems to be out of place when his music is adapted to just about any instruments. These arrangements for guitar of his violin sonatas and partitas is Exhibit A as testimony to this fact. They sound as if they were conceived for the guitar. Thanks in large part to the arranger, of course. But the naturalness of his melodic and contrapuntal contours never resists adaptation to any forces. Probably the main reason why "Switched-On Bach" was so popular. These wonderful performances of his sonatas and partitas for violin arranged for guitar are just gorgeous, utterly musical, and totally natural.

I agree, but I think perhaps a kind of confirmation bias comes into play also, because arrangers will of course only arrange pieces that actually work. Or rather, it is their successful attempts that we are most likely to hear. Still, Bach's compositions seem to work with any instrument that has the range for the piece, with a musical clarity and charm that remains surprising and insightful more than 450 years after his death.

Good point Tom and I too have wondered why Bach's music is so robust when transcribed not just across different instruments but also genres, Jazz for instance. In my view Bach is unique in this respect and I suspect that the basis for this quality is the harmonic robustness of his compositions. Even in single note solo instruments eg violin partitas, the harmonic element is very strong - we are always clear on the chord agreements. It's really damnably clever. Bach's vision and musical intent are clear and precise throughout; the music has a natural path through which it flows never sounding forced or arbitrary. Melodic inspiration is one thing but the "workmanship" that Bach deploys in his composition process especially around the harmonic dimension is to to be marvelled at and gives his music a rock solid basis for melodic creativity.

That quotation is from Mozart, not from Beethoven. Mozart said this about Bach's son CPE who was his teacher and father figure. It puts Mozart into perspective. Neither Mozart nor Beethoven considered themselves on eye-level with Bach. Beethoven studied Bach since childhood respectfully called him "the ocean of harmony". JSB is BY FAR the greatest musical genius that ever walked the earth. That's not a matter of opinion because all of the greatest composers confirmed it.

Bach’s music has never been an easy listen. Those in the 1700’s didn’t listen or understand. The complexity of divinity Bach strives for, nor did they believe that god did either. Much like today Bach’s genius is lost in the motion of the fugues of confusion relayed through exasperation at the normal intelligence can not like nonetheless live that which is beyond their comprehension.

As if both sides gains from this confluence: Bach's music feels more free and the guitar finds musical-treasures that were not meant initially for it. Isn't this phenomenal playing? Once more, B.C. introduces us (me, at least) to a superb young musician, with an apparently promising career beckoning - deservedly. He probably has no need for more compliments; & B.C., either, for their wonderful presentations. Complaint? Info about Francesco's fine guitar? It supports his talent quite brilliantly (no less). Luthiers deserve due credit. Thanks to all.

What's also amazing about his music is all the instruments it can adapt to. I haven't known the guitar sonatas for very long and already they're some of my favorites. ...I was blinded by Glen Gould this entire time!

Blind and blessed. Glen was considered the best in the world at the time, he was invited to Russia and the Ukraine to perform. He came back amazed at how good and strong the Ukrainian string players were, shortly after he quit knowing he'd never reach those heights ever again. And this from a sometimes classical guitarist!

Just as other reviewers have claimed, these works sound natural guitar repertoire. As guitar/violin works, they stand above everything else composed like stars compared to grains of sands: this music underneath is perfection from top to bottom, the very best that can be achieved on string instruments. Performer's excellent phrasing and crisp clarity of execution only makes it clearer than ever (and also what an extraordinary violinist Bach must have been).

not kidding. i play the WTC every day, about 20 favorite tunes. There is blues , jazz and even FUNK (especially towards the end of book two, those are FUNK syncopations, that last prelude in Bmi, esp), and how many possible permutations of chordal and melodic theory is it possible for one individual to assay? truly bach was a madman!

My go-to for Sei Solo on guitar. Restrained deviations from the violin score and a consequent focus on tone elevate the instrument in my opinion; and further, tap in to the creative spirit which must have inhabited the composer.
