Start with the Bouree, then the Allemande. Next, tackle the Gigue and then move on to the Passagio/Presto (Passagio is easier). Save the Courante and the Sarabande for last, as they are the most difficult.

There are few things more exciting than a really good live performance in the flesh right there before your very eyes! You did it for me! I was amazed and I am sure that Father Bach would approve. It is also amazing that Bach composed this during a few weeks playing with Samuel Weiss( if I remember correctly). We also forget that Bach's grandfather played the lute and it was probably one of the first instruments that Bach would have played. And just one thing more. When Segovia was desperate for a reportoire for the guitar,this is what he found.
Fantastic! The best 996 on YT. I love that Giga, and the Courante.

Watching your video inspired me to make a piano/harpsichord version of the Allemande : )
@adamroth752 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! While we don't have an original source of this music in Bach's hand, one of the surviving primary sources (copied by another) is inscribed with the subtitle: "aufs Lauten Werck", a reference to a funky keyboard instrument invented in 1718 that's a kind of mash-up of a lute and harpsichord. So, this piece may have been originally for a keyboard instrument anyway! Cheers, Adam
@RaindropCantabile2 жыл бұрын
@@adamroth75 You know, I was surprised by how nicely the notes fit on the piano, but at the same time I found the notes to be very sparse for a keyboard piece. Of course it is difficult to judge since I have not played too many pieces that were possibly intended for the lute-harpsichord : )

One tip from a student guitarist is to sing the piece in your head... Most importantly Bach... you should really sing a lot.... that will improve the way you perceive musical phrases and with that, you will have a tendency to slow down....

I thought you were Galbraith from the thumbnail lol. Great performance overall I just think it's a bit too slow. What I like more about your version than Galbraith's is the fact that you do iterations man that bourree definitely deserves more than the 30s Galbraith puts into it, the only thing I like more from his is that he actually goes from the bourree to gigue through an anacrusa idk if Bach noted that but it was usual to start gigues with anacrusa I think.

Funny, though. I was watching a few excerpts from one of my other videos (BWV 997) the other day, and thought it was lacking in a lot of respects. Some people only listen to what's wrong, myself included. So, in fairness, it *could* be way better, and I don't begrudge anyone their opinion. Frankly, I'm amazed at how kind the comments always are. Maybe only good people watch Bach :)
@BflatestАй бұрын
I have a question... I am trying to finish learning the BWV 997. It's the first time I have tried to learn all of a suite and play it I have all the prelude, 0% of Fuga :), 90% of the Sarabande 80% of the Gigue, 0% of the Double. I am a pretty good guitarist played for years and years but not classical guitar, I did solo finger style of popular modernist hits. blues electric and so on. My question is how do you play it all through with no real show stopping mistakes? I would think just playing it over and over and over would help but no I make at least one complete mistake It's either getting lost in it or a finger missing something lol. Thanks
@adamroth75Ай бұрын
I'll tell you when I figure it out. There's a video of me playing the 997 live on here somewhere and there are plenty of mistakes. I'm getting better, but still don't know if a live performance of mine will ever be up to snuff. My two avenues right now are challenging myself to do perfect segments x times in a row. Even if it's just 8 bars. And then reducing tension and parasitic muscular contractions in the neck and shoulders that take my hands out of place, but that's a whole extra can of worms.
