Love the way the guy is hanging on the side and no one notices
@team33836 жыл бұрын
He must have been the one that came along at the last moment and asked for a ride on any available boat ...... Amazed at how casual he is just hanging there while the rest of the crew ignore him ! he did well to hang on for that long.

Cheaper to replace him than replace the spinnaker 😅

...... seems that nobody likes him out of the crew ....

And Ironically, he probably did the most work in terms of righting the ship.

Looks like they tried to set the spinnaker on what appeared to be very near a beam---or even a close---reach. Comedy of errors indeed. The good news is they all appear to be wearing life jackets!

I'm amazed she made it back up--and little to now water in the cabin, eh? !!!

This is really pathetic, but don't worry--everyone is learning at first. 1) If it's blowing the washboard must be in place and the companionway hatch closed. The washboard must have.barrelbolts on each end so it is securely locked in place. It must not come out even if the boat turtles and.the waves are 12'. The sliding hatch must remain closed. I had a male fitting that projected through a slot in the washboard. It had a hole in the end and a wooden fid on a lanyard could be dropped down through the hole locking the slide in place. In a real breeze no one may go below without the express permission of the skipper. While anyone is below the companionway hatch is to remain open; the washboard remains in place. The cockpit lockers must be secured. I used a small piston hank on 12" of leechline to secure the hasp on the locker lid. 2) It should go without saying that in breezy conditions everyone, even very strong swimmers, must wear a lifejacket. It is far easier to move about in the water doing whatever you must to get the boat righted and under control if you are supported by a lifejacket's buoyancy. And make sure you have enough buoyancy to float heavy clothing, foul weather gear, and boots if you are so dressed. 3) If you are sailing upwind and a puff hits, you head up (slightly) feathering into the wind. If you are sailing downwind and a puff hits you bear off and sail down (but not too far down! You do not want to jibe.) As you bear off the boat will flatten out and accelerate and the apparent wind will drop, perhaps only slightly. If you are sailing off the wind and you head up in a puff the boat will heel over. The more she heels, the more she'll want to round up. And centrifugal force will throw the mast toward the outside of the turn making things still worse. So the rule is: puff hits going upwind, head up. Puff hits going downwind, bear off. But these corrections can be be subtle, even in a strong breeze and high waves. Head off too quickly or too far or both and the boat will roll to weather. This is the beginning of the dreaded Death Roll, familiar to any sailor of small, light dinghies. The only way to save yourself is a hard, vicious thrust of the tiller toward the leeward rail. No subtlety here. Just ram it. A weekend racing a Laser will teach you more about boat handling than a season in a big heavy keelboat like a J or an Etchells. Good luck and enjoy yourself. After all, that's what it's all about!

This is why you keep your lockers shut and locked.

This is a j22. J24 doesn’t have cabin windows. J24 is beamier and also is more self righting but I have seen one sink right in front of me during a broach like this because the lazarette cover flipped open. I used to own a j24

no need for spinnaker in that wind. just fine with jib.

And this, fellow sailors, is why you shouldn't put stopper knots in your spin gear.

So... chute in the water kept that 700lb ballast from self righting, and to solve the skipper released the spinn halyard and mainsheet, then kicked the mainsail into the water for a little boost back up? Did I get that right?
