"Ja", "halt", "doch"... There are a lot of modal particles in German. These little words are difficult for learners of German because there is no direct English translation. Modal particles convey an opinion, attitude or knowledge between the speaker and the listener and are very common in spoken language. We are planning a whole video series on modal particles - today Cari starts with "ja" and "doch".
“Ja”, “halt”, “doch”... Im Deutschen gibt es eine Menge Modalpartikeln. Diese kleinen Wörter sind für Deutschlernende schwierig, weil es keine direkte englische Übersetzung gibt. Modalpartikeln transportieren eine Meinung, Einstellung oder ein Wissen zwischen dem Sprecher und dem Zuhörer und kommen sehr häufig in der gesprochenen Sprache vor. Wir planen eine ganze Video-Reihe zu Modalpartikeln - heute beginnt Cari mit “ja” und “doch”.

My strong recommendation if your native language doesn't have those modal particles is: Do not attempt to translate them. It will always fail you sooner or later. Instead: Learn by example. Lots and lots of examples where these modal particles are used in different situations. Get to know them slowly. One by one. Try to use them in your speech. This makes far more sense than continuously trying to find replacement words for them. Modal particles don't exist in many languages and they cannot be translated. It might sound crazy that something is really untranslatable. It's difficult to wrap your head around such a concept. You might think: But somehow I can translate it by this or that. No, you can't. But if you really have mastered those particles one day, you will agree and understand in hindsight that it's true what I'm saying.

As a new learner you clinge to your own language, a little bit frightened to let it go. You keep searching for translations, concepts that you compare things to. And at some point it makes click and you realize you don't need that. You don't need to touch the edge of the pool, you can swim freely. It's a great feeling to finally achieve this, that's why I can only encourage learners to try just that with the modal particles. It's like a background melody being played under the normal language, conveying feelings, emotions, expectations, disappointments in a very subtle way - microtuning what we are saying. We usually never think about this that much and just use it as if it was the most normal thing in the world. Actually an amazing concept.

The way I always interpreted the word “doch”, while living in Koblenz, Heidelberg, and Bad Vilbel, during the 1970s was that it seemed to either mean you really agree, or just the opposite and really disagree , depending on the demeanor of the user.

I think the closest I can think of for 'ja' used in this way in english is 'of course', the assumption that the listener knows what the speaker is talking about. To convey implicit understanding and to emphasise the statement as well.

Als Muttersprachler der japanischen Sprache, die auch viele Modalpartikeln haben, sind deutsche Modalpartikeln nicht so besonders schwierig für mich. Aber 'doch' ist eine Ausnahme, es ist immer schwierig!

Sehr interessant - vielen Dank! Ich glaube das diese Worte kann vielleicht manchmal auf Englisch übersetzt werden. 'Doch' mit 'on the contrary' - aber man ja :-) benutzt es selten auf Englisch. 'Aren't you coming tonight?' 'On the contrary, I'll be there!' Und manchmal 'actually' - 'the price is actually on the sign' (auch unhöflich auf Englisch). Und auch manchmal mit 'so'. 'So have a seat!' 'So bring your sister along!' 'Ja' kann manchmal mit 'you know' übersetzt wird. 'He's, you know, a comedian' 'It isn't, you know, used much in English.' Es gibt (hoffentlich?) ein Verständnis uber den Situation. Und auch manchmal als 'so' - 'That's so cool!'

Sehr interessant, danke! Ich habe "ja", "doch", "halt" und "eben" beim Gespräch oft gar nicht als separate Wörter wahrgenommen (besonders "ja"), sondern nur ihre Bedeutung verstanden. Deswegen habe ich die selber nur sehr selten benutzt... Und die Phrase "ja nicht" habe ich immer als "jar nicht"="gar nicht" identifiziert, weil die Rheinländer die Buchstabe "g" und "j" am Anfang des Wortes oft verwechseln: jut=gut, juten Tach=guten Tag. Aber es war wahrscheinlich doch "ja nicht"...

Vielleicht solltet ihr das Wort 'fei' in eurer Series inkludieren, da es ja im Bayrisch-Fränkischen, Österreichischen und Schweizerischen, also im gesamten oberdeutschen Sprachraum tagtäglich benutzt wird. Und das auch außerhalb von unseren Mundarten, also wenn wir 'Hochdeutsch' sprechen. Denn als Bayer scheitern oft meine Versuche kläglich das zu erklären und das nicht nur bei Zweitsprachlern, sondern auch bei Deutschen aus dem Norden. Cooles Video, man lernt nie aus!

Great video again! Admittedly, I was slightly confused about the word "Doch" sometimes, while living in Germany. But mostly, it wasn't in its role as modal particle, but when used to answer a negative question: "Kommt Peter nicht mit uns essen? Doch!" (He does!). But as modal particles, we have the same usage of both "ja/da" and "doch" (would be "jo" and "dog" in Danish), except one... the "Mach das JA nicht!". That wouldn't be possible in Danish. All the other examples are 1:1 compatible. The easiest example would be the podcast one: "Der is ja ein Comedian" in Danish: "Han er jo stand-up komiker". And the "Dog" (pronunced: Dou) example (from the fruit/veggies stand): "Kig dog på skiltet!". The usage is exactly the same. Also "Watch out!" is "Se dig dog for!". /Ole

Here in Massachusetts - a place infamous for our slang and accents - we have an analogue for "ja," (for the most part) and that would be "wicked." "Doch" could be translated as "Hell yeah" or even "No shit!" Thanks for another great video!

Все просто! 1. Ja в смысле "конечно" 2. Ja в смысле "же/конечно" как усиление. Оценночное усилиние. 3. Тоже самое. Doch: 1. В значение "же" как усиления противовеса между двумя аргументами. 2. "же" как усиление высказываемого качества (без противовеса), как положительного, так и отрицательного. Безоценочное усиление. Все просто. Спасибо за видео

Gutes Thema, danke! Ich glaube, es gibt auch im Englischen einige Wörter, die den "Modalpartikeln" ähnlich funktionieren. z.B: there, then, just, now, so, maybe, actually. Aber wir benutzen sie nicht so oft wie im Deutschen und sie sind immer noch ein bisschen anders. Ich habe manchmal Schwierigkeiten zu unterscheiden, ob sie das Wort in seiner ursprünglichen Form oder als Modalpartikel verwenden...

If you were to look at a German Grammar Table of Contents, where would you put "German Modal Particles"/Modalpartikel or Abtönungspartikel or any sort under "Partikel" in the German grammar, where would you put them? Would they all be under "Adverbs" or "Sentence Structure"? I'm trying to reorganize/reclassify/recategorize my notes better in their rightful spots according to their Grammar, so where would I classify them under?
