Great vid! 6:50 - regarding coasting being to slow - just checked by loading your setup from the time trials and your engine breaking was set to *max* (0 is max, its inverse) so no wonder you felt slow when off throttle lol.

More EB gives you more rotation. Thus the high EB should help you to go even fast through the corners

The point is, you would not set the car up in this way IRL and therefore, this should mean the car if realistic wouldn't be fast, but it is the fastest way to drive it.

@@GuagoFruit In rf2 a detatched rear ARB is the default value for a lot of the GT3s. Just because you are running a stiff roll bar at the front and soft at the rear shouldn't make it feel weird.

@@d43tomo18 Absolutely not! EB is totally based on driver prefrence. The values are inverse because you are setting up the reduction of the engine braking. 0 in EB mean 0 reduction in EB. So A) it is not the fastest way to drive it. It depends on the car and personal prefrence and you can be quick witth any kind of EB value. And B) it is not unrealistic. A driver who wants the full EB would just go to 0 EB reduction. Nothing wrongt with that

My take on sim racing is that since I am not able to experience real life racing cars (of this caliber) or tracks, I'd like to experience something that is as close to the real thing as it can be. I've stopped caring about realism. It's nice to have something believable, and obviously it's the point of sim racing, but each sim handles differently and different people swear by each one, so to me it's pointless splitting hairs over cars I'll never drive in anger. I prefer just to have fun with each title for what it does positively.

I've been sim racing for over 30 years (started with Indy 500 by Papyrus) and have learned that the 'racing experience' is more important to me than whether a sim is considered the most realistic. For example, iRacing may be considered more realistic but I find the overall experience in AMS2 and Raceroom way more immersive and fun. It's the reason I keep going back to those games vs others like ACC, rFactor2 or iRacing.

Agreed. In AMS2 the other day, I did a 100% F1 race in VR; I lost it and crashed outside turn 3, and stayed sat in the car for a bit. I "felt" the track go yellow, hearing my competitors wind down to pacing speed in the distance, a flashing yellow LED flag here and there. Then I hear the rumble of an AMG, I look over and the safety car is hauling ass out of pit road ready to pick up the pack. What good are the best physics in the world when there's no experience around them? That moment kicked ass!

Aging sim racer here as well, RR seems very immersive and somehow accessible, just like its underpinnings (Race07). The main issue with AMS 2 is that are not equal within the same class, some are fine, some seem forgotten (like the GT3 gen1s who seem still on the old 1.5 physics). But if they eventually get half the car classes to feel like AMS1, it would be awesome.

Thanks for the review, James. Realism for me also. I attended my first F1 GP with my dad in 1968 (the last race that the great Jim Clark won) and, since then, I have been obsessed with racing in the 60s and 70s. Sim racing was a gift from the gods as I could visualize racing against my idols from that period. As a 65 year-old sim racer that cut my teeth on Grand Prix Legends in 1998, I have always longed for a realistic game, even if that means that I come last in every race!

Realism is important to an extent, but if the sim is not fun to drive, I'm no longer interested, and if the graphics are so poor that I lose immersion, then also that's a big negative. I'm sure AMS2 is not the most realistic of the current crop of sims, but for me it hits a sweet spot of being realistic enough so that all the inputs I use in other sims work much the same in AMS2, while being super immersive and a ton of fun to drive.

A little tip: even though this is a sim that you can just start up and drive in; getting the setup right for the track you are on will help massively in reducing your lap times because the default setups are not suited for certain tracks. Since the new update; all the cars have been reset to thair default state

Yea this is a big one that is often over looked, i always go in and change it right down no matter what car. If needed I then start turning it back up. Should default to lowest in my opinion.

You can adjust engine braking amount (to help keep coasting speed) in the setup and you can adjust the wheel from shaking on straights through settings in your wheel software.

Personally I'd like it as real as possible and if it can be fun to drive at the same time that's a great thing. I do really like AMS2 especially now since the update. There are some things that could be slightly better but overall it's great fun

Regarding FFB: If you don't want your wheel to go crazy on the straight, you can just increase the dampening. Also you can just turn down the FX to decrease that excessive detail

I prefer realism, but I also know we'll never get a truly "real" sim experience. If I could take the suspension from AMS2, tire model from LMU, weight transfer and sounds from ACC, and the matchmaking of iRacing, that would be perfect for me.

I'm primarily an ACC McLaren driver and that definitely brings some bias, but for the life of me I can't understand how people rave about the LMU GT3s. The feel on the wheel is just numb, there is no bite to the tires ever and it seems like your cornering radius is basically directly dependent on your speed as trailing or weight shift in general doesn't seem to do much. AMS2 is fun like you said, but both for me are miles behind ACC. What comes to my preferences with the sims, I'd like the car to behave realistically but I'm completely fine with the FFB (or active pedals) giving you "unrealistic" inputs to compensate the lack of physical feedback you get when you sit in a car. Obviously you should extend this series with an ep on ACC. ;)

New bop and slighty stiffer carcass sidewall out for the gt3 cars. Reduce engine breaking of the car by increasing the engine breaking number in the setup. That will help reduce the excessive slowdown while coasting. I used default plus and no damping with 50 fx but ffb can very subjective so yh. A lot an be impacted with learning setups in the game so id recommend doing that if you hace the time which i suspect you don't

So you’re telling a real gt3 driver how to drive. Setup wise, this was a hotlap session the biggest thing ams2 drivers do. They take a fast guys setup and run it. I’ve done that at IMS so when I pass the s/f line it blows up. The setups aren’t made for racing , just a few laps or maybe a qual session

I have to say though... As a game which is based on the Madness engine, they've done a pretty good job making it realistic to a point where it competes with the other high-tier sims in the genre because we all know the legacy of the Madness and how it was back in the day

Amazing James I totally think that it should sound like the real thing in all sims to get the true feeling of being a racing driver. and that should include the true tire model and force feedback the best experience possible that I have just started in ACC it feels planted on track and the corners. I guess the sims are getting better and improving with each update

I play Sim racing titles as a way to experience being in a real race car and learn driving techniques that would otherwise not be able to apply to anything on the road. It doesn't matter if graphics are not great all I want is a SIM that is the most realistic possible. I play different titles cos each one of them does a "thing" better than the others. All I dream of is racing! And this is the closest I will ever get! 😁

I have a simucube osw wheel base and found that I need 50% damping, 10% friction, 20% inertia and 10% low force boost in the simucube wheel software. I find this feels pretty good and reduces over activity in the steering when used in conjunction with the in game custom ffb setting. I have the wheel set at max 15nm and adjust in game ffb slider as desired.

My understanding James is that the Audi and the Huracan Evo 2 are both OP currently so if they get rebalanced and reset the leaderboards you very well might be able to get the world record.

I really think AMS2 is the best singleplayer sim on the market. It's realistic enough to call itself a simulator but it has what feels like a hollywood atmostphere. Driving and especially racing the AI (better in VR) feels like a movie.

Very educative series of videos about the realism in different sims. And answering your question realism is 80% for me. If a sim is not realistic I simply don't play it no matter how good graphics or gameplay it has. So lack of realism is a blocker for me :) Thank you for mentioning what game is the benchmark now in terms of realism. Normal racers as me cannot understand it as we don't have access to the real car. But nowadays I only play two games: ACC and LMU. So in this sense your videos are very helpful. Maybe a review of Rennsport could also be interesting.

James watching the Force Feedback section. My gripe with LMU is the wheel is constantly violently shaking and oscillating down the straights. AMS2 feels more 'calm' by comparison, and yet it feels like you're saying exactly the opposite.

Regarding the vertical movement, it's a good point that James raises. If you watch real GT3s, when they hit the brakes for the Bus Stop chicane, you see the front of the car dive but then oscillate up and down as it bounces off the bump stops like a pogo stick. Just watch slow motion footage from GT World channel if you don't believe me. The real cars react violently to bumps compared to every sim where the suspension seems to just absorb everything perfectly. It's an area that all the sim developers should investigate why this doesn't line up to reality.

Listening to a pro racing driver explain the shortcomings of AMS2's physics is so refreshing compared to people like Gamermuscle who just moan and call it floaty without ever explaining what that means. I really enjoy this game but it's great to know where it falls short of the real thing.

Just an opinion, yes... but you are probably one of the most competent opinions we peasants can get. I don't trust real racers, I don't trust simmers, but a real racer + a simmer is my go to for opinions.

For me I think I want something that is mostly realistic, but not at the expense of it being fun. AMS2 is my primary racing sim right now because IMO it's the best game, not most realistic sim. I love that i can fire up a server and jump on with a couple buddies and some ai cars and be racing in a matter of seconds. Not one of these other sims are capable of that. I also enjoy the variety of it. The fact that people are even comparing the GT3 cars in AMS2 to other sims like LMU and ACC really says something about AMS2. Those games only simulate 1 to 3 classes of cars. AMS2 has GT3, semi truck racing, go karts, 90s DTM, Formula 1, Indy, you name it. The fact that their GT3 cars even made it into the same ballpark as those other sims is impressive.

A sim game is never gonna be 1:1 real life, can never be due to too many factors. But what ams2 is good at is trying to equate the fun of driving in real life, the pleasure of driving and speed sensation you get especially in VR + motion sim is closer than other sims I’ve tried. I actually get excited jumping in the game as I would when I drive my sports cars in real life.

Lots of comments from AMS2 fans seemingly finally conceding that it is not realistic, but that also, realism is not the most important thing to them and the whole game experience is more important. That's refreshing honesty, and a valid preference. I am the opposite, I've uninstalled botth AMS2 after 1.4 and won't bother going back for 1.6, and uninstalled LMU after only a couple of hours (interesting to see exactly the same issue I found with LMU - power oversteering a GT3 through Stavelot as if the rear wheels are on castors). For me, if a sim fails to feel realistic, you cannot use your natural intuition and driving experience to improve at it. Instead just like an arcade racer you need to learn the game, it's version of vehicle "handling" and I don't have the time or patience for that. These other comments showing a different perspective, show how it's fine to have different preferences. But I also feel like sim racing has split into at least two different experiences. 1. Something seeking realism, and 2. Something seeking fun, and competition. Seeing as the larger market will always prefer "fun" it would be useful to distinguish between these two things to avoid confusion, and also hopefully not dilute the genre goal of achieving realism, which was and should be it's main goal. imho.

re: sound I think ACC has the most complete, but something like iRacing hasn't yet modeled the sound properly but will soon. So many surfaces in the car, and from the track (walls etc) to get the complete feeling of immersive sound

I need it to be believable (and provide consistent results, some games have moments that feel so random at times)... but if any sim is lacking the gameplay depth I want (variety of content and a single player championship mode), then at most it will get infrequent hot lap sessions but nothing more. For example that's my issue with rFactor 2... great sim physics, has content I enjoy, but lacks something for me to do more than hot lapping sessions or one-off races. AMS2 is my go to racing sim at this time. I think it's handling is enjoyable and immersive enough for my skill level, but I keep coming back for more because the variety of content (lots of niche content not found in other sims) and find it's the best offline single player experience currently available (and doesn't require a subscription, even though iRacing's single player feature is way better than it needs to be).

Professional drivers at the pinnacle of motor racing can come in from a morning session, have dinner and a dump and then complain the car feels the opposite of what it did in the morning session. That's without any changes being made to the car at all. Yet here we are talking about how realistic our computer games are. It's whether you 'feel' like you're a race car driver when in the car and as James eludes to, whether you're having fun.

Would be nice to compare the rain-physics as well with your experience. The rubber-line supposed to have lower grip as well. To be fair, with the TimeTrial you basically get fresh tyres every lap. Doesn't mean the physics change dramatically over time, but the tyres behave a bit different over 90° C and punish too aggressive slip-angles here and there. In the earlier days (till 1.1 or so) the 650S was very challenging to drive once the tyres reached even close 90° and every bit too much slip-angle/throttle was prone to end in a spin. At that time I was winning quite some online-races just by knowing how to nanny the tyres till the end. I avoided TimeTrials because the way to (over-)drive for one fast lap was not the way to survive even 5 laps because of tyre-overheat. Instead of tweaking this behavior to a more reasonable level, Reiza just killed it, which ended in those drift-physics as a result. 1.6 seems like small step back in this regard and not really new at all.

I'm a "real" sounds guy and feel that sound is half of the fun/emersion. I don't know why developers don't mix some of the external sound with the onboard sound to add more depth and realism. They act like you can't hear the exhaust and outside reverberation from inside the car. Seems like an easy fix and could even be adjustable by the user.

Change the differential. It the most influential thing in this sim. Every car has set at default to 6 clutches. Mess with those settings and it changes so much. As for the FFB, yes some tuning is needed to remove the artificial feeling.

I want it to be accurate and realistic as possible. They're simulations or supposed to be. I also agree on how the GT3 cars feel in this game, they still have that slight floaty/drifty/slidy feel, though it's definitely better compared to 1.5. Downforce and open wheel stuff feels good though.

Hi James ....quite crazy to seen such a big name in one of the AMS LFM practice servers today. Like defenderbwe said turn down the engine braking and coasting should feel better. In my opinion all the old custom FFB files out there are not working well with 1.6. (was using them too before)They all seem to be totally oversaturated. Try standard+ file and add a little bit damper in your simucube settings.... and all this "shakiness" will disappear without loosing a lot of information. But it's nice that someone is even talking about the possibility to work with custom files in AMS. Im just a sim racing hobbyist, without great intentions to be competitive as fuck, and as a "VRonly" player (ReverbG2+4090) my focus are mostly immersion and fun. In this aspect AMS2 is just insane and nothing can beat this sim.

si yo tambien tengo esa sensacion de que todos los autos patinan y deslizan en todas las curvas. por mas que pongas el circuito saturado y el control de traccion al tope. y en los circuitos que hay una curva lenta o varias, siempre patina cuando aplicas potencia.. por mas que solo pises el 1% del acelerador. el auto se va en rpm y desliza. como ahi en spa la curva 1.

I agree the sliding is still there. Even for the "improved" cars it's still very noticable. That type of handling fits a lot of the classic formula cars well, but for gt3 and similar I really don't like it, feels like I'm rallying on gravel. I want to love AMS2 because it has tons of content right out of the box, looks great, runs well... But i can't get over the handling tbh

Realistic sounds. A sim racer is to drive something that is reflect the real car in all aspects - looks, feel, sound, physics…

So it kind of feels like a rally car when GT3 car has more nascar setup where the rear end squats down at speed to make the diffuser work.

Fun first, realism is of course very important, but it should provide me a good non annoying experience. I feel the game I like the most is the ones sitting between pure sim and semi-sim. I can't play Forza or anything much arcady, but I also don't enjoy a game if I have to put 110% of my attention to it and need to bring a degree in mechanical enginering. For that, Kunos and Reiza both know how to find the right balance. Also depending when you recorded that, there was a patch on 19-Dec at night where they fixed the Lambo and R8 BOP... so you may very well have been easy 1st.

chasing lap records is always fun, from the cockpitview it looks like the car has under and oversteer at the same time, really weird. In most regards i chose realism, but there are some areas i chose fun racing over realism, like things like dirty air, they try to minimize that in real racing, not really needed in a multiplayer game, i rather have better racing.

I don't really enjoy driving the GT3 cars in AMS2. I find the vintage open-wheel cars to be very fun to drive and this game has a really great selection.

Personally I think the game should be fun and playable. I expect that the game caters for the majority of players. I guess the real life races and top sim players are probably only account for 1%.

I prefer good and fun. I play in VR and want graphics be cars to sound "juicy", physics to be challenging and FFB to be communicative.

the LFM AMS2 Streams have been fun to watch. I do think their GT3s aren't their best cars and the LMDH and LMP2s drive much better.

In general reallife onboard sounds are often better than sim onboards anyway, imo

felt like the dynamic weight distribution isn't there. You coast to get some more rotation, but if the weight doesn't shift slightly to the fronts, then you're better off braking or accelerating. I don't feel confident getting the power down in the porsche gt3, which should be his strength.

Ams2 while it doesn't simulate the physics 100% accurately where it shines is the immersion.. i prefer this over other games because it captures the vibe of motorsport perfectly and that goes a long way for me.

I like a sim that tries to be realistic but at the end of the day it's all for fun. I still love thrashing cars around in GTR2 and rFactor1, I like the new gtps in iracing ATM just because of how ridiculous they are even though they are hilariously unrealistic 😂. IF I was an actual driver I'd definitely want more realism

I think it's so sick that we as simracers have enough options to meet the needs of so many motorsport fans/gamers who have different interests and preferences. This is why I'm not particularly interested in creators holding a magnifying glass over the GT3's in AMS2; I'm not sure it's Reiza's mission to create one type of car that rivals other sims that SPECIALIZE in 2-4 classes of cars. James doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who sits in his rig and goes 'I'd really like to drive a Lotus 23 around the Nordschleife circa 1970'. This is possible in AMS2 and no other simulator, and likely required TONS of attention and effort from Reiza that could've otherwise but spent trying to emulate other sims that offer a better GT3 experience. I do wanna clarify that I'm not saying James is being unfair here; I just think it's important to keep in mind different sims have different objectives, intentions, and consequentially, different target audiences. AMS2 may not be the sim for you if you find yourself only utilizing a very small portion of its content, and that's okay! But it's there if you ever wanted to explore something different from what you usually play.

The Audi and the Lambo are the fastest in AMS2 at the moment, their straight line speed is tough to beat. Hopefully a BOP adjustment comes soon to bring them closer

AMS2 feels like you're in a constant slide, that you're never in a a position where the slip angle settles down

Not beeing a pro driver and with never having a chance to compare with a RL GT3 Car, my main attraction of a sim lies with what one could call "fun". Do I like to spend my time with certain sim yes or no. I have several hundred hours in any of the 5 sims I own. And despite some "shortcomings" of the physics, AMS2 is the Sim which I do like most....somehow...It does not have to be 100% realistic. But it's package , and now with LFM connection, it offers a lot for the average sim-driver. At my age ( 65+) I love to drive the cars of my youth ( GT1, F1 1990ties/2000 ) and also the new LMP's. I do own LMU as well and love the crystal clear FFB , but the game as such has still some problems. Again. Driving some of older racing series in AMS2 , coupled with changing weather does fit nicely with the general tendency of AMS2 physics. ( McLaren F1 - GT1, Nighttime, Rain, NordS or Spa...hardly any game I know gives this kind of immersion ).

I want certain sims to be real (iracing) and then when I want just fun, I play GT7. Both are needed in the sim racing community.
