The LEGO Group has officially revealed this year’s flagship LEGO Star Wars Ultimate Collector Series set, the nearly-4,000-piece 75397 Jabba’s Sail Barge.
Marking the return of Jabba the Hutt to the LEGO Star Wars line-up for the first time since 2013, 75397 Jabba’s Sail Barge is the third rendition of the gangster’s luxury yacht in LEGO - and far and away the biggest to date thanks to its UCS label. It weighs in at 3,942 pieces in total, with 11 different characters in the box. But it doesn’t come cheap.
You’ll need to part with £429.99 / $499.99 / €499.99 to bring home 75397 Jabba’s Sail Barge. For those playing along at home, that’s the same price as 10316 The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell, 76269 Avengers Tower and 76405 Hogwarts Express Collectors’ Edition, and makes the Sail Barge the fifth-most-expensive LEGO Star Wars set of all time.

I don’t mind expensive Star Wars sets. The $1000 AT-AT is one of the most impressive sets Lego has ever made, but for $100 I can get a playscale AT-AT that’s good enough. Where I mind is with $500 Lord of the Rings or $300 Zelda sets that are the only option for those themes. If you’re priced out, you lose access to some themes, and that sucks.

I wish to thank Lego for helping me to quit Lego honestly. With these prices, I’ve managed to stop buying for a year now and I do not regret missing out on all of them. It was frustrating for sure but over time I’ve come to accept that this is really a superficial excuse just to boost my self-worth but I have also realized I didn’t need it. I’m now cured of FOMO and I believe most of us will as well as long as Lego continues this strategy. Keep it up!

Its almost funny watching some of these big lego content creators with their houses full of boxes, pieces and sets. Once they grew up they will start to realize that stuff you own actually owns your time because you need to clean it, maintain it, move it if you want to move. Some have understood and started moving away from these massive piles of plastic but it takes time.

A couple years later I ended up selling everything, but I still like to check in and see what SW sets get released. I agree with your thoughts on the cantina, Luke's landspeeder appears in the scene before the cantina, while the skiff and Jabbas sail barge are in the same scene and the film cuts between the two. People who spent the money on the cantine probably dont have a problem sprinting some on a small landspeeder as an additional bit of detail. Jabbas sail barge doesn't work without the skiff.

What LEGO does incredibly well is pull on all our nostalgia bones. It’s no surprise that the ‘Star Wars’ theme has 2 of the most expensive sets ever made, it’s a highly nostalgic property for multiple generations. They’re now recreating sets that first released 10+ years ago which means for collectors who had the original sets back in the day (my first ever set was the original 2006 Sail Barge), we feel that sense of nostalgia overtake our sense of financial l responsibility as we want to relive those moments from our past. All that being said…$500 is nuts and I’m priced out. Sorry LEGO, you’ve officially “broken” my nostalgia bone!!! 🤣

As someone who's been waiting for a UCS Sail Barge ever since the most recent consumer-grade one I skipped out on, I have to admit that I'm tremendously disappointed in this. Not because of the lack of skiff or sarlaac pit (though those are legitimate issues), or the minifigure selection which I am not too bothered about, or even the price, but the sail barge itself. It looks cheap. It's huge, but it's all wrong. The bow at the front is far too short and stubby, and its slope doesn't continue into the body of the ship. The deck is too flat. The color choices are same-y and make the whole thing look like a long leather shoe with too-small sails on top. This doesn't strive for the on-model perfection like the Imperial Shuttle, Slave I or AT-AT did. This is a consumer-grade set blown up to monstrous proportions, with a monstrous price tag to match. I wouldn't buy this even if it was 200$ cheaper. I really don't know who this set is for. For a collector looking forward to a barge that is as accurate as possible, with impressive building techniques to achieve difficult shapes, this is a miss. For someone looking for a large play set, it's too expensive. What's the target audience here?

I think there is a point where people simply give up trying to afford the sets and start to just opt out. As the costs of increasing the 'collection' becomes ever more ridiculous. It is so obviously going beyond affordable for so many people now. It also creates an ever increasing market for knockoff versions as people feel it's their only way of getting access to this stuff.

They're retiring a 400€ Tatooine set with 21 figs and a giant green molded monster and bringing out a 500€ Tatooine set with 11 figs, one of them also a giant green molded monster... 800 more parts than the first set, but minus 11(!) figs (I'm assuming Jabba and the Dewback cancel each other out).. Oh and it comes with a DLC for another 80€, which comes with 6 figs, but one of them doesn't quite fit the scenario. Speaking of which, there's an additional skiff missing from the whole picture... Why not include that second skiff and some more guards with the UCS for the same price?! This is effectively a 580€ set, with 17 figs, but one of them does not fit at all..

Yep. To me it feels like the UCS ATAT…where you got some minifigure trooper and a couple of speeder bikes but not enough to fill the thing up. To do that you have to buy a lot of battle packs or get the SW magazine snow trooper. Obviously they couldn’t have included enough troopers to fill the ATAT it would have been crazy! But they could have at least included enough speeder bikes to fill the slots and released the Snowtroopers as a smaller battle pack like the Hoth one with just a few rebel troopers- with two Snowtroopers and a scout trooper. Would be better than having to buy lots of the snow trooper battle packs and ending up with loads of speeder bikes leftover! I think comparing it to other Star Wars ucs sets is hard as there isn’t one that fits into the £430 bracket- but comparing it to the Rivendell set or the Avengers tower, both sets with big IPs yet both these sets have a significantly higher piece count and way more minifigures! Personally I think LEGO is taking the piss with this set. It should either have included the sarlac pit and skiff or at the very least included more minifigures like the characters you mentioned. Hell do you know what? They should have included a second skiff with a load more minifigures to fill it because there were actually two of them in the film! That would’ve increased the piece count without much cost and gotten more figures whilst still justifying having the other skiff and sarlac pit sold separately.

I think it was good that the skiff was separate so that it's attainable for people not wanting the sail barge. The problem is that the price of both sets is excessive and both should have more figures. The skiff should have at least one weegway or some other baddie. Same for the sail barge. I believe that Lego made the Sand Skiff and Sarlac pit a separate purchase to give the options to consumers. Instead of the new Sand Skiff being locked behind a $500 price tag (More likely $600 if the added the Skiff) its a separate build, that is by itself a decent representation of the scene. The 2013 Jabbas Sail Barge did not come with the addition of the Sand Skiff or a sarlac pit, it was two separate sets, and people didn't seem too upset by it. Id rather have a separate build for the sarlac pit, than for them to throw a weaker build in the UCS set. Pricing is still crazy on both sets.

It probably wouldn’t be if enough people told Lego “no”, but both Lego and their licensing partners know that there are more people out there who will pay _any_ amount of money for specific sets than there are people who are more conscious about their wallets, so they know they can get away with this nonsense over and over again.

As I see it, Lego basically copied what Hasbro did on their action figure size Sail Barge. Exact same design in Lego form and they seek to gouge the fans for $ same way as Hasbro did. With Hasbro SW fans had to buy a separate skiff same as Lego is doing. Hasbro of course charged separately for nearly all the figures to go with the barge and skiff so it was really expensive. At least Lego still provides mini figures in sets. Next up, maybe Lego will start selling premium mini-figs fans want for sets solo and at premium prices. It’s a business. They do the math to maximize profits.

I don't mind the skiff being in a separate set. I constantly hear people saying they want more smaller sets so they can combine them if they want. This is just one of those situations. The price is mostly a function of inflation, but also larger pieces which are more costly to manufacture. I wasn't going to make buy decision on either this or the skiff until after seeing what they did with Leia and the other minifigures. I'm disappointed with her legs, but there are relatively cheap older versions on Bricklink.

I agree that both this and the skiff are grossly overpriced. However, I disagree that the model of separating sets is bad. For example, I can't afford a whole castle, but if you sell me bits of it in different sets, I can buy one or two and not feel like I missed out. I wish they did this with the Deku tree. The tree itself, Link's house, and the Master Sword pedestal could've been three sets instead of one big one.

I actually appreciate that the skiff is a separate set, pricing aside. Had the skiff been included, the price would have been higher. I think breaking the set apart and producing display-quality play sets is an excellent way to insure consumers with lower budgets are priced out of fewer experiences. The Cantina was missing Luke's land speeder, a very good version of which was available for separate purchase. If Lego makes an MBS Endor bunker, I would hope the AT-ST would be separate for those who would just like that set on its own. I have no issues with multiple purchases being needed to complete a scene, so long as those products are available. I feel Lego nearly did this perfectly with the AT-AT and the several Hoth sets released around the same time, though a snowspeeder was noticeably absent. Again, I would have loved the snowspeeder to be released on its own rather than as a part of the AT-AT.

I have no problem with them separating the sail barge and the skiff. There are going to be people who just want the skiff and ROTJ Luke and Boba etc but don’t want to spend $500 to get them. Firstly, I really enjoy your channel. Bear that in mind when I say - the thing that really annoys me about huge Lego Star Wars sets is when Lego KZbin creators complain about the price of products... Then get a free one sent to them by the Lego Group for review. Free set that most people could never afford. This is the ultimate loophole, you just have to have a KZbin channel to do it. 😢

I think the price is insane. That being said, this is how I am makingbit work for me. I got a credit card that gives you 250$ bucks for opening it plus the reqards points for the spend will be another 40ish bucks. Plus theres the VIP points you get for buying it and the GWP. So, for me, the $543 (tax included) will feel like $253 plus the GWP and VIP points so maybe like $207 of real money. I do this everytime i want a high priced lego set. Works like a charm

Tbh i dont think the "dlc" aproach is necessarily something bad. If the barge and sarlacc were both reasonably price the idea of having them in two sets would be pretty cool for people who only want the sarlacc and skiff for example. Ofcourse how it turned out it feels like the skiff should be included in the barge for that price. Likewise the idea of releasing set that are meant to go with previous ones is pretty cool imo. Like id love to see a modular castle where they release a base version and over time release further modules to expand it with another watchtower or a stable module for example.

I of course I'm not buying this, but I wouldn't mind having two different sets if they were priced out more reasonably. I think that it totally works for consumers to have different parts of a set so they can choose and pick which ones they prefer. But it's unjustifiable when the total comes from just $80 to an entire check.

I’m gonna have to see it side by side with the cantina before I can really have a feel of it. I think being $100 more than the cantina is insane when it’s only a few hindered more pieces. I’ll be grabbing it, but I’ve been wanting this thing for month. For what it would cost to get all the characters out sourced I could buy this and be happy. Plus I’m loving finally indulging in bigger sets

I think the problem isn’t so much that it lacks a skiff or Sarlaac, but rather it’s just not a good choice for a UCS model. The UCS lineup is there for really good models of individual ships, not necessarily replicating scenes. The sail barge just isn’t as interesting a vehicle as the Star Destroyer for example.

I agree on the price point, I disagree on the necessity to include further parts. This is a UCS set, the point is the ship, it's not a play set, it's not a snippet of a scene. Otherwise you end up with messes like, the cantina, that you mention, the hoth "UCS" set, the ewok village and the cloud city set that end up being a hodge podge of stuff when on display.

Supply and demand. Lego knows the prior models of the sail barge went for insane after market prices, so they know people are willing to buy this specific model/memorabilia at a high MSRP regardless of piece count, minifig count, etc. If no one bought this set the day it launched, lego would be forced to put it on sale to a more reasonable price. But it will sell since the demand is there, & they know that

People have a right to be pissed you have a more expensive set that has less pieces than the Barad Dur set then the skiff is sold separately and none of the characters are that unique. This won’t sell well in this economy.

The sand man was complete set. Like yeah you don't have all the villains. But you have a super hero and a super villain and that's mostly all you need. It combining is a bonus. All the sand man set needed. Was a mini fig of sand man. As far as the liberty set. While you didnt have a complete cast of villains you still got a lot of villains for the three spidermen to fight.

Not only is the sand skiff and scarlacc set not included but they could have added two sand skiff that is accurate from the movie. There are mini figures that are missing as well such as Boba Fett who played a huge role in the movie, a jawa, and maybe a few random assengers. if the skiffs were included they could have added more guards. They also don't have the duel leg C3PO which would have been accurate to this set. It's just for this price range they could have included more and could have been more accurate to the movie.

At a time that I'm massively scaling down what I'm able to purchase, I can't even come close to affording this. I wish some of the figures were available in cheaper sets because I love to display figs, but if the tower of Sauron is anything to go by, the figures alone will be more than the cost of the set 😮‍💨

Re dlc model for Lego, yes they did it with Barack dur and the fell beast. Orthanc came with an ent, you would have to consider the fell beast was designed with barad dur and simply not included. I didn’t even think twice about the possibility with the skiff, I was laughing that the gwp suddenly cost $130 aud. Also i think the greater point is, while the us/eu/uk are only coming to terms with this now, other territories hit the same problem years ago, and have been through all the emotions, conflict and chaos and now on the other side. I don't even care. And given how much i've been regularly buying lego for, i honestly feel sorry the most for people in the US/UK/EU who pay full price. If you look at what people buy lego for in aus, factor in taxes, currency, discounts and retailer margins, still consider that lego even then are making money from AUS.. they are really having their way with the big currencies / economies.

There's probably other collecting options if budget won't allow - some of the most fun (to build and play with) sets have been more modest as far as piece count, price, and IP - LEGO is getting pricey all around - the chances of that being corrected (market response) are slim. So if disposable funds are a concern it may be a good idea to stay away from sets that are themed with higher IP costs (Star Wars and Disney)...
