You have to watch the part 2 on the heels of this. Otherwise you'll lose track. And the director made it as one film and at one go. If you don't, you'll miss the little nuances and titbits that come back around in the second one. You'll appreciate this masterpiece even more if you watch it consecutively as I did. This is my favorite movie ever. Peace. ✌

Actually, it's a misconception that Anurag Kashyap decided to break the movie into two parts inspired by the scale of the godfather movies. His inspiration for the same came from the French crime drama Mesrine: L'instinct de mort and Mesrine: L'ennemi public #1(part 2). Kashyap travelled to London back in 2008 for a single day (and returned!) after catching the one format show of the film, and years later decided to do the same for Gangs of Wasseypur. Side note, anyone thinking about watching the Mesrine movies, they are heck difficult to find, and in my personal opinion, not worth the trouble, except for Vincent Cassel's performance in the lead.

The guy who made the script lived in Wasseypur and this was his life. The events he heard from hearsay and adding his interpretation to it to make a compelling story. Direction is unique in itself, might've taken a few techniques from here and there but you'll never find anything more Indian than this. Not only was this very cheaply made, it made way more profit and became a grand hit in public's eye by sheer relatability. People who lived in rural areas would agree that this is indeed more or less life of a gangster...their foolishness, rise to power and fall from grace. The dialogues were amazing too.

Achara, about the music, they mention in the Making of the film that its called Chutney Music. "Chutney music is a fusion genre of Indian folk music, specifically Bhojpuri folk music, with local Caribbean calypso and soca music, and later on Bollywood music. This genre of music that developed in Trinidad and Tobago is popular in Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Suriname, Jamaica, other parts of the Caribbean, Fiji, Mauritius, and South Africa." Bhojpuri indentured labourers were sent to these places during the British Raj to work on plantations.

One of the music director Sneha Khanwalkar travelled whole of the region and listened to the folk music of the are... Also ceremonial musics and in the homes of locals... Got some of these gem sounds and transformed into this Bollywood rhythm...along with lyricist Varun Grover who picked up the nuances of the dialect and wrote these lyrics.. Interesting thing is they were given more than a year by Director Anurag Kashyap to do this and they were not tied by the screenplay.... The best songs were chosen and fitted into the screenplay. Some those were added just because they were too good to be left out.

What goes without saying is that more than 50% is getting lost in translation. Sardar khans second wife is Hindu and hence isn't okay with him having a second family while the 1st wife was Muslim who legally practice polygamy in India so she just has to live with her fate. That's also the subtext in the 1st wife having many kids while the Hindu wife refuses to be a child vending machine like nagma.

I'm not saying this against the Muslims, I'm just explaining Durga'a character in the movie, to people who might not get this context. Ramadhir Singh Vs Sardar and faizal khan is also abt Hindu Muslim conflict, it's been shown subtly in the movie.

Polygamy is almost equally prevalent amongst different religious communities in India. Just because a polygamous marriage is legal in the civil laws for Muslims it doesn't mean that Muslims are more polygamous. Its Caribbean Chutney music. This music is created by the people who transported from Bihar (india) to Caribbean as slaves and they created this music there. The whole history about those people is very interesting too.
