This happened at the start of the 20th century, but at the end of ww2 in a rematch of sorts, Russia would have taken a good chunk of Japan if FDR had lived and followed through on his agreements with Stalin instead of dying and leaving Truman to drop the nukes as a ceasefire for the Russians as well as the Japanese.

I realize you want to make a bit of a joke when saying that 'Japan realized guns were more effective than samurai swords', but a comment like that is a bit misleading. The Meiji Restoration was a complete societal overhaul including social, economic and political change (which of course included the military) going from a semi-feudal state to a modern one, impressively quickly. Still love your videos man, but it wouldn't have been hard to word that one a bit differently.

I think that there's a mistake with the number of troops on the Russian and Japanese side for the battle of Mukden. It says here that there were 330,000 Russian troops (instead of 340,000 mentioned in your video) and 270,000 Japanese (instead of almost 300,000). Here's the link: www.britannica.com/event/Russo-Japanese-War

Yea the Russians really had no idea what they were getting themselves into. "Oh just 40 years ago those guys were still using swords and spears" Instead the Japanese army turned out to be more modern and well equipped than theirs. The Russians probably had only one gun per two soldiers.

"The Russians probably had only one gun per two soldiers." lol, Russia always "underequipped", "unskilled" etc, are you a moron? The Japanese died/wounded more than Russia in this war. This war was a strategic-tactical loss not a technological loss.

In this war the Japanese attacked the main bulk of the pacific navy at port without declaring war, used guerilla warfare torpedo boats, later sunk most of the Russian main ships in the port from land in an unprecedented manner, chased the disconnected Russian army in terrible positions, prepared to intercept Russian ships for almost a year engaging them in a terrible position due to the discovery of their position at night as the Russians didn't turn of the lights on the hospital ships, but it doesn't matter really because the British stopped the Russian fleet from reaching Japan, probably the furthest place from the Baltic Sea, in a short time and in good condition effectively anyway due to some fishing boat accident. Oh, and Port Arthur, the most important strategic position got surrendered in a grossly incompetent move by the commander for absolutely no good reason.

more like they tried to chew on the cake that was too large for them. Alaska was sold for the same reason. And no, russians were decently trained and armed at the time. It was more of a lack of infrastructure that brough them defeat.

Yeah, "some fishing boat accident". Is it British fault, that Russians were to stupid to mistake British fishing boats for Japanese war fleet EAST OF GB? About 30 000 km from Japan? Were British supposed to ignore Russian retardation that made them attack their citizens?

This is what inspired the Japanese to attack Pearl Harbour in 1941. The Japanese basically used their war plan from the Russo-Japanese war to try and beat the Americans in World War II. It failed as the Americans had a much more stable society in 1941 then the Russians did in 1904-05, a more modern military and a much stronger economy and industrial base then the Russians had in 1904/05.

Rian You are right. But really Russia lost this war becouse it had the great logistic problems. At WWII USA had the direct output into Pacific ocean but Russia hadn't it. The reason of this war was a fight for Port-Artur. It was the one non-freezing port avaiable for Russia. Russia had a great problems to send a reinforcment. The 2-nd Pacific squadre go to Far East about 9 monthes and came to the war very late. The Transsib had 1 way only and its productivity was 6 trains per day only. And we had the best team of the commanders in the world - Admiral Stark, Admiral Rojdestvenskiy, General Stessel', General Kuropatkin, vice-king Alekseev and Imperor Nikolay II. This guys can lost any war. Even versus pingvins :) But the Russian industry was better then Japanase. Russia manufactured battleships, cannons, etc. Japan cann't manufacture a weapon and buy it in the Great Britain using a British credits

Russia felt humiliated after the Russo-Japanese War. I read that because of that they mobilized their army before the Serbs and Austrians could work out something after a Serb shot Austrian Prince Franz Ferdinand in 1914. The Russians put this huge army on their western border to show how strong they were. Then the Germans and Austrians thought that was pretty much an act of war and that was the beginning of World War I.

Japan is The most powerful country in Asia too be honest. They have defeated and conquer many countries in past history. Russia tried too build their own empire before the soviet union splitt into independent countries both in central/-east europé and central Asia. China Occipied many provinces and created borders into a huge country thanks too their Wall they built too defend themselves from The mongolian army and Japan took controll over countries in south east asia and also some Islands out of Australia but lost them during the WW2 with Western Powers and USA. All These War is All about power and wealth so these Wars in history is All about evil against evil.

This is a late reply but it was because of the Anglo-Japanese alliance, which was what Japan intended. Germany and France didn't do much other than give money and equipment to Russia because doing more would have a chance to provoke a British retaliation. And Britain was much closer to them then Japan and Russia were. So it was beneficially mutual in that Japan could fight a 1v1 war against Russia and Britain could control some of the influence of their rivals

I like the videos but my question isn't about the videos- what's your background, Jabzy? I feel like English isn't your native language, but you've know it since you were young- maybe learned it around age 10-12. From my American ear, it sounds like you learned the King's English, not American English... Are you an immigrant to the UK or do you live in Europe/Middle East? I could be way, way off, but I'm really curious about your accent (which isn't that strong, but is...unique). I say all this, and you're going to respond that you're from Alabama or Pasadena, or someplace like that haha...

LOL. I think it's the UK vs. US thing... I can hear a bunch of UK English that I wouldn't hear from a native US English speaker, and I guess I don't hear UK English enough to differentiate the various accents- maybe the big differences (cockney vs. royals, Scotsman vs. UK) but that's about it... I think in America, we figure everyone either sounds like the Queen or a 19th century bootblack.

At the very least they could have invaded Taiwan which was under Japanese control. Map - 3.bp.blogspot.com/-E-pZf2bFPUc/T-a9SQaoU2I/AAAAAAAAJS0/GKy--d5Ozwc/s640/rUSSO-jAPANESE-WAR-1904-5.jpg

Japan sneak attacks a country then declares war. Hmmm sounds familiar.
@MahsaKaerra

It was the world's reaction to their behaviour in the Russo-Japanese war what made them want to issue the declaration less than an hour before the Pearl Harbor attack, but both the stupidity of cutting it so close and a delay in translation screwed that up.

It’s worth noting that the elder statesman of American imperialism, Theodore Roosevelt, Mr. Rough Rider himself won a Nobel peace prize for brokering a resolution to this war. It’s also worth noting that if Japan had not been so successful in this war, it’s highly unlikely they would have attacked Pearl Harbor 35 years later. So we should have been rooting for Russia.

I don't understand the alliances between nations from 1860-1945. So Britain liked the Prussians/Germans and Japanese, but disliked the French and Russians. So what about the world wars? Why did they side with their enemies? THIS MAKES NO SENSE!!!
@JabzyJoe
@JabzyJoe 8 жыл бұрын
+Vaygor It's pretty complicated and there are a few reasons, but to simplify - This war nearly dragged the 2 Britain and France into a war they didn't want (France was allied with Russia by this point). Plus, the Boer war was pretty devastating to British ideas of their invincibility. So the 2 signed an alliance, something that was only possible then because the scramble for Africa was over, when no future Fashoda-like incidents would take place. Plus, whereas Bismarck managed the diplomacy of Europe pretty well, his successors did not. For instance Kaiser Wilhelm angered the British by insulting them, challenging their naval supremacy and praising the Boers. The French and British were driven closer together by further blunders like the Tangier Crisis. You might also be interested in looking up British invasion literature. These began after the Prussians crushed the French in the Franco-Prussian war. As they a lot of readers I'd say they represented the fears of a good chunk of the population. And although earlier books would have Britain being invaded by the Russians or French as well, by the early 20th Century they mainly focused on a German invasion of the UK. As for Japan, the Americans sort of persuaded Britain to break the alliance with Japan because they feared their growth after WW1. However the 2 maintained relations until the Japanese attacked British colonies in Asia in 1941, hoping to unite the East under their control. Also, its worth saying that the Nazis actually tried to create an alliance with China and helped build up their army, This only ended when Hitler chose to side with Japan, who he thought would be more useful in the fight against communism.

+Vaygor Here's to WWI. The French were humiliated by their defeat to the Germans in the 1870 Prussian-Franco war and the ensuing loss of an important industrial territory to the Germans, Alsace-Lorraine. Bismarck's unification of Germany threatened the balance of power of Europe so France and Russia formed an alliance in 1892. The British later joined this alliance (Sort of, it's complicated) because of their fears of the growing strength of the German navy. This was the basis of the Triple Entente. When war broke out between Russia and Austro-Hungary over AH's declaration of war on the Serbs, Germany entered the war on the side of the Austro-Hungarians. England at this point had no interest in joining this war and wasn't treaty bound to do so. The Germans, as part of the Schlieffen plan and in order to outflank the French, moved their troops through Belgium. Belgium was a close ally of Britain so Britain sent an ultimatum to Germany demanding that they remove their troops. The Germans ignored them and so England then joined the war on the side of the French and Russians.

+Jabzy mentions something rather interesting here. Most people forget that Hitler supplied the Chinese Army with a huge amount of supplies. Thats why if you ever see footage of Chinese soldiers fighting the Japanese Imperial Army they are wearing the Stahlhelm and carrying Kar98s.
