For anybody who is confused about the controversy, I will try to explain it to the best of my ability without being biased. I will try to simply go by facts. Recently, a large amount of Channel Awesome employees left the Channel, and put up a Google Doc listing several ways they were mistreated, including abuse of employees (particularly females), blatant favoritism, really bad work environments, and being fired for ridiculously petty reasons (seriously, who fires someone for taking time off to have a surgery?). They also talked about how filming the anniversary specials was a nightmare, thanks to rushed schedules, poor communication, a large amount of injuries, and Doug and Rob being rather bad at handling big projects like those (they seemed to both overestimate themselves and everybody else). The majority of these problems (not including the anniversary specials) can mostly traced to Mike Michaud, the owner of the Nostalgia Critic (Doug gave him the rights because Doug just wanted to focus on making videos) and Channel Awesome, who at some point decided to practice being a mustache-twirling evil overlord. Doug and Rob are getting a huge chunk of the blame since: A. They’re the cocreatorrs and faces of the website. B. Obscurus Lupa (a former employe) recently posted a tweet about how Doug essentially stood by and did nothing while Michaud abused his authority (like firing her for not immediately responding to a Skype). C. A certain quiz show money-handling fiasco (Doug ended up with more than planned, and a lot of it didn’t go to what it was supposed to). D. I refer you back to the anniversary specials. So basically, everybody’s mad at Doug and Rob for just looking the other way when Michaud treated everyone else like shit while they were essentially treated like kings. The Walker Brothers are also getting a lot of hate for trying the *if I ignore it, it’ll go away* strategy regarding all this instead of talking about it. I have my own theory regarding the Walker’s reasons for doing this, *but* I said I was going to keep this unbiased. If you want my opinion, check my response.
@BB-fy8kn
@BB-fy8kn 6 жыл бұрын
So, if you want my opinion on why the Walkers aren’t talking about all this, it’s because they *can’t.* I’ve seen their Sibling Rivalries and Vlogs and, for the most part, they seem like pretty nice guys. Hell, Doug once even apologized to Noah Antwiler (Spoony) for accidentally stealing one of his ideas (Doug just happened to think of the exact same thing)! So, while I don’t deny they probably did nothing to stop it, I don’t think it was willingly and/or they were OK with it. I think it’s because by that point, Michaud had gained so much power that now the Walkers are near-powerless figure heads *at best,* or just glorified regular employees *at worst.* Michaud essentially constantly has a gun pointed at their job (Mahuad *really* owns the Nostalgia Critic), so he’s probably forcing them to keep quiet. I love Doug and the Nostalgia Critic, and I’ll continue to watch his videos, but I won’t deny I’m a bit disappointed by all this.

Welp, the bubble was bound to burst eventually. In a strange way, I'm glad this issue is finally seeing the light of day. On one hand, change for the company is anticipated, for better or worse, which I'm looking forward to. On the other, I really despise to see such talent go to waste by the mishandlings of a puppeteer. He is no Gepetto, no Jeff Dunham, but simply a greedy overlord who is confined to see a 1-dimensional view of "awesome". This channel should emulate at least 3 dimensions of awesome, be it creativity, well-rounded communication, and overall fluid cameraderie. hell, it needs to be more than 3 dimensions. I still wish to stick by this channel, if only because I have hope in what's right, and that what's right, will be done. After all, the show, the review, must go on.

If this document is true, it needs to be dealt with, especially Mike. I hope, it won't affect other people's jobs like Dougs, since I love his content, but when all of his fans swing the hammer like this, it probably could. People need to calm down, think of something rationally and I would support it. Not this shitstorm in the comments.

I'm still curious about the outcome of the fiasco. Malcom did say a video was coming soon addressing the situation. I still do care about the whole thing, as it was something that had been festering for years. I just wanna hear it from Doug and Rob's POV. Their response to the allegations in question is still important; not to us, but the ones who wrote their part in the document. Granted, the majority of allegations were against Michael, but Doug and Rob were major players in the channel's success and how it was run. In essence, they were, and still are, "managers" of some variety.

I guarantee all the downvotes have nothing to do with his performance or critique. This same video 6 months ago wouldn’t have had 300. Which I find almost an abuse of the system, almost. I generally hate it when people downvote for reasons that have nothing to do with a video’s specific merit, but I suppose if Doug is being that stubborn, then perhaps there may be no other way to get his attention. If he DOES apologize, I would expect everyone to return to this video and express their acceptance of his apology by either up voting or at least un-Voting.

Fun fact : 11:35, that a cameo from a french comedian, Gad Elmaleh. He got a carrier of comic stand up and movies in france, and even got a part in a Spielberg (Tintin where he played the owner of the third unicorn). And right now, he is in a scandal of stealing joke from little comedian... and everybody hate him for a really bad commercial he did for a Bank company where he just do a stand-up and says "I dream of a bank that engaged himself, that help me" and the public laugh... Yep... That sounds implausible, like something they'd do in a parody, but not the actual movie, but if you think about it, Click kinda did that... I can see them writing that movie like "Oh yeah, then he uses the pause button, and then the fast forward button, but at the end he confronts the woman he loves and learns his lession." So they're ready to produce the movie, but that night at the bar some guys from the meeting are making fun of the movie half drunk like "Oh yeah these movies are all the same dumb shit!" "I know right!" "Ahah! Imagine this, what if we actually make a serious movie for once, wouldn't it be hilarious? Like after using the remote and all the shenanigans, Sandler accidentally skips years ahead and misses his children growing, and misses his dad dying and all of a sudden the movie becomes super dramatic!" "Ahaha!" Then the next morning one of them is like "You know what..."

For the confused: Back in March and April 2018 several former members of Channel Awesome released a document displaying how the higher-ups of the company were abusing, neglecting, and inappropriately treating the others. Everyone got mad about it but then a month or two later everyone forgot. That's why there are so many dislikes. It's also why Channel Awesome shrunk recently.

Ben Martin I don't understand that. Does Mike own the name and likeness, because if so couldn't Doug just change his outfit, his clothes and then be done with Mike? It's not like someone can own the rights to angrily talk about bad movies, and if he is afraid no one would follow him if he changes names, the AVGN use to be called the Angry Nintendo Nerd and no one stopped watching him because of that.

kerrr rr it won’t be that easy, his boss owns the rights to nostalgia critic which means that if he went with making critical nostalgia he has the power to at best strike these videos down and at worst can sue for copyright infringment. so if he spoke out and lost his job he woulden’t even be able to get himself the ability to make these videos. (i will admit i don’t know if that is how it works but i think this could happen)

I know you're not going to address the controvercy Doug. From everything I've heard, I know that Mike probably won't let you say anything, especially since he owns the Nostalgia Critic character. Your livlihood is on the line, and despite the crap going on I feel like you're kinda stuck. I just sincerely hope that Mike gets what's coming to him and that you can go on to create and be more.

Mike Michaud owns Nostalgia Critic. The next couple videos from Doug will probably have less effort put into them as they all try to work this out. It would be great if Mike Michaud released the rights to Nostalgia Critic but I doubt that’s going to happen. You guys can still enjoy Nostalgia Critic but be against Mike Michaud though.

That's exactly what I'm doing. I will continue to remain a fan and supporter of Doug Walker and the NC but I will hate and stand against Mike Michaud. The more I look into it, the more it looks like all this started from him and the more he looks like Amy and Samy from Amy's Baking Company and Matt and Karen from O Face Bar. I understand that bars/restaurants are different from internet shows but they're both businesses that need to be handled and managed carefully and that's something those people all failed to do.

"You guys can still enjoy Nostalgia Critic but be against Mike Michaud though." *THIS.* I unsubscribed from this channel out of protest against Mike Michaud. Not because I no longer appreciate Doug's work. If they get rid of Mike Michaud (which is extremely unlikely unless Doug can somehow get the rights to the NC back from him), I will gladly resubscribe.

The thing is, on the list of people that deserve blame, Doug's pretty low on the list. He's not innocent, but a recurring theme I'm seeing is that most of the problems were caused by Mike. I think Doug can recover from this, but not as long as he stays with Channel Awesome. But that kinda puts him in a rough spot because He doesn't own the rights to his own character.

They often make the main character an ad exec in these stupid comedies. They don't always make it such a big party of the story as they do in movies like this or What Woman Want but even just saying the main character is an ad exec, more or less just in passing, allows them to more "subtlety" place in product placements. Aren't movies magical kids?
