Jack Hyles' Sermon Reveals Spirit of IFB Pastors

Many are the time that I remember hearing people hoot and cheer because a preacher would "rip someone's face off" publicly. Many are the time that I remember hearing the experiences of those who had been on the receiving end of strong public rebukes like that. But also, many are the times that I remember someone, be they a preacher, teacher, school administrator, or even another student at college, trying to use that tactic to manipulate someone into doing something they didn't want to do or to do something that would benefit the one who was trying to embarrass someone else. I've heard it all, everything from, "Did your parents have any children that lived," to, "You don't really care about people going to hell," to, "You're not a real man if you don't do that," to, "I doubt you're even saved," to more personal insults that fit the moment of the conversation. That's probably why it doesn't bother or intimidate me when people do the same thing here on social media. But interestingly in this clip which was preached to a room full of IFB pastors and preachers, when Jack Hyles admits that he shouldn't have done it, that it was wrong, that it was against the Bible even, you could almost hear a pin drop. The crowd goes nuts when he recounts the verbal rebuke he gave the deacon, and there's nary an, "Amen," when he actually preaches the truth of the Bible that that's not the way to treat people. The clip is so revealing.

Yes, I agree, and many independent fundamental Baptist pastors act just like this. I was told years ago it's called "sheep skinning", (the opposite of sheep shearing), an act which kills the sheep. I have heard pastors bragging from the pulpit about how many sheep they had "skinned", AKA "ripped their face off" with the preaching and drove them out of the church like it was something to be proud of. I have met many "sheep skinners" in pulpits over the years, but cannot recall a single one of them ever repenting of it. Put that on your list of 'Baptist Standards' sometime. Jack Hyles was a wolf, wearing the clothing of one of his skinned sheep.

What is really telling, is that this man, in growing his church to the heights of big numbers, had no concern for where his listeners would even sit. Caring for the needs of the people WAS in the scope of the deacons. But as usual, as long as he had a mike and a podium on which to thump, the people could all go hang. I agree with you, the congregation preferred the bad behavior, and the corrupted teaching, because it is what they wanted to hear. Jesus/Yeshua said, My sheep hear my voice, and will not follow another, but this group, and many others like it, are like Israel on the mountain when they said to Moses that they would rather not hear from God.

I did the IFB for at least 25 yrs a few were gentle souls but most like Jack hyles control over the flock how you dress where you go what you listen to on an on they all alike. You feel like your every move is watched an dissected by these preachers . We are all sinners saved by grace they drove me nuts. 4 church spits I go to church now an the but listen to UTubes.

So, he shames his deacons in front of the whole church while using the widows as pawns in his trump scheme. He wasn't cursed by them. His deacons called him out and he acted like a child.

Deacons look different from one congregation to another be😢congregational needs are different from one congregation to another. One thing is clear though; a deacon’s role is to take of the practical matters of the church so that the pastor can be focused upon what he needs to be focused upon! Why should the pastor be tasked with the ordering of pews when such should be delegated to the building committee? Seems to me that a good pastor would be appreciative of deacons who take the initiative and relieve their pastor of such burdens! Jack Hyles was way out of line here!

I empathize with you. I've known many who have struggled continuously from their experiences with IFB preachers and churches. I do encourage you to get involved with folks that can help you to recover and heal, and to find that not all Christians are like those with whom you've had experiences.

Taking your life won't erase [guilt and shame] what causes you to consider it. Hebrews tells us tha Jesus even dealt with shame for us on the cross. Accept that (Heb 12:2) and Romans 8:1-3 and The Word (Christ) will scrub your conscience (Heb 9:12-14)

Jack Hyles did make a good point, and while he did, it showed the spirit of those in the crowd who were loving the fact that their hero put a deacon "in his place." Jack Hyles went on to say that "bless those that curse you" isn't in the Fundamemtal version of the Bible, and he was right. The spirit of many an IFB preacher has been very much a "rip your face off" type of spirit.

@IFBPreachers I agree, and what you said is true which is why I think it's a good point. Too often in ifb settings we hear people making fun of "emotions" in church but so many are acting on the same emotions just in a different way. The IFB Bible thing was pretty clearly a joke because it went right along with what you said and what he was preaching. They didn't want to hear it, very much the sons of Thunder and much less the compassion that Jesus requires.

I understand what you intended. I too was blessed to be in the church and school there. I see these young preachers now, who are trying so hard to prove that they’re so much more loving than Bro. Hyles was, yet their churches are near empty and their communities unevangelized. I have traveled the world and meet people practically everywhere I go who were reached because of FBC, Hammond.

Yes, I do believe that's true, and I believe it's because to maintain the culture that the IFB creates, you need someone like Jack Hyles or J. Frank Norris to do it. Now, the question becomes, is that the culture that a person wants to create? Is that a healthy culture for a church? Because what we see, is when the man passes on, moves on, or falls into sin, often the church doesn't continue on. People may blame compromise for it, but I rather see the IFB church cultural being the reason for that.

This is what happens when you take your eyes off of Christ and place them on a pastor or yourself. Had he been humble he could have admitted his mistake and perhaps rented some chairs until the pews could be ordered. All this guy does is brag about himself, making his sermons very boring. The church should have disiplined him long ago for ripping on his fellow members in public.

I grew up in the church. This was back at the BEGINNING of the "charismatic movement" of the 1960's. I love the Lord. I accepted Yeshua as my Lord and Savior. I tired of watching this kind of garbage sometimes it was justified but USUALLY, it was turf wars garbage. It is why I do not go to church. Too much of people pretending they are something they are not. I have watched over, and over, and over, men professing to have a Godly walk on Sunday only to be the most heathen, backstabbing vicious people in business. Ive watched them act in the vilest manner 6 days a week and pretend to be this holy person on Sunday. I am old enough to remember when nearly every store, restaurant, etc were closed on Sunday. I remember when the 10 commandments were taught as the way a believer should walk on a daily basis. Today NEITHER of those is taught by almost every church I've attended. And in its place what is taught is Liberty theology and a doctrine of money. I have sincere friends who are believers who are convinced (INCORRECTLY) that fashion your life and how you act and treat others based on scripture is somehow trying to attain Salvation through works. They ignore James when he declares, FAITH WITHOUT WORKS IS DEAD. What amazes me the most is how people (wilfully) refuse to see that GOD desires obedience over sacrifice. Salvation to stir your heart to incline your eyes, ears, and heart to walk UPRIGHT. In fact, in Acts 21 we find Paul presenting himself before James the leader of the church to report on his missionary work. And James says some very interesting things. He tells Paul "See there are MANY Jews who have come to recognize Yeshua as Messiah and "THEY ARE ZEALOUS FOR TORAH(law)" What should not be missed here is that JAMES does NOT in ANY WAY suggest that they are misguided or WRONG. IN FACT, HE SAYS THE OPPOSITE. James states to Paul that THEY have heard you are teaching against Moses (Torah) SO THAT THEY MAY KNOW THERE IS NOTHING TO THIS ACCUSATION, take these men and pay their fee (for the cutting of their hair off which is part of the vow of the Nazarene.) and James finishes that thought by saying that they will see that "YOU YOURSELF WALK ORDERLY"

Yeshua in Hebrew, Isa in Arabic, Gesu in Italian etc. His mother called Him Yeshua, His disciples called Him Yeshua, there is no problem with calling Him Yeshua, so long as you have been brought to repentance and faith. There are those who preach another Jesus, one without holiness or repentance, one who celebrates Christmas and Easter and is saved through saying a prayer and easy believism rather than the convicting power of the Holy Spirit through the preached Word. I would stay away from that guy, even though his adherents use a King James Bible and claim sound doctrine.

@@princybella5386 Actually, in the 1611 KJV it's Iesus- pronounced Yay-sus. The 1611 is written in English, and is the refined translation text- pure words, refined in a furnace 7 times to quote the text. Obviously there has been a change in the beginning sound- a transliteration. Iesus- is Greek for Yeshua or Joshua as it has been transliterated from Hebrew. Instead of getting upset about language conventions and insisting that your particular pronunciation is the correct one, like the Hebrew Roots sacred namers do, why not accept the fact that in different tongues the name has a different sound, due to the language. God preserved His Word in Hebrew, Greek, Aramaic and other languages, from which we have the body of the Received Texts that make up our English KJV. God is able to make himself known, there is continuity and prophecy in the name Yeshua, it does not in any way detract from His identity as both God and man, and if the Bible says the Gospel was to go to Jewish people first, and then the Gentiles, then it would make sense that he retain His Jewish identity, so as to be recognizable. Christianity has lost the root, it is no longer recognizable as the olive tree because so much paganism and transliteration has been adopted. Most Jewish people today think the New Testament is full of Catholicism, and are often surprised to find a Jewish Jesus teaching Jewish things in a Jewish way and keeping Jewish feasts, and ultimately fulfilling Isaiah 53 and Daniel 9 if they ever dare to read them. If we will preach the Gospel as the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy so that a Jewish person can see their Messiah, then gentiles will see him too. The Jews seek a sign and the gentiles wisdom- if we will obey what the Bible says there can be no doubt as to the identity of the one WE call Jesus, but who has been called very differently by people who also were saved by God's grace through repentance and faith.

Indeed. It's not slander to point out what he himself admitted, that he contributed to a culture of unjustly humiliating people. And the video shows the crowd's reaction when he said he did. They loved it when he unjustly embarrassed the deacon, but not one "Amen" when he admitted he was wrong. That's the culture that many if us endured, a culture of shame and humiliation because those in leadership couldn't control themselves. No slander when it's admitted.
