Jack Nicklaus wins at St Andrews | The Open Official Film 1970

It was an outcome prophesied by Henry Longhurst. As Doug Sanders played his approach shot to the 72nd green at St Andrews, the great commentator knew it wouldn’t be the last hole of The 99th Open.
The American was bidding for his first ever major and led Jack Nicklaus by one with seemingly two shots left to play on the par four. Sanders took three though, as he saw his lead combust in the blink of an eye.
The pair then competed in The Open’s first 18-hole playoff the next day, where the Golden Bear took victory in one of the most dramatic finishes in Championship history to claim his eighth major success.

A gem of an archive film. Doug Sanders might have made the worst putt ever on the 18th but he also played the best shot out of the road bunker. I don't think any pros use a wide stance and a half swing anymore. It is curious that in this film his cardigan was pink but in the BBC's coverage it was dark purple, so I wonder whose colour was more accurate.

Thank you for the upload,this is the game that I fell in love with,proper golf on a proper golf course not uniformed,capped wielders of toasters on sticks having a putting contest round a mediocre resort course. It's interesting that this footage shows the amazing contours of the Old Course better than more recent imaging,perhaps it looks flatter now because of closer mowing? Jacklin might well have gone sub-60 before the weather derailed his challenge and a taste of what was to come in being paired with Trevino ..."You don't have to talk ... just listen!".

Met Doug Sanders at a public course here in Houston, maybe late '90s or early 2000s. He was on the putting green....I walked up and introduced myself, he was very approachable, affable, even asked me what I did for a living....Will never forget.

Is there any more spectacular sight in all of Golf, than the Old Course? I think not. Half manufactured. Half natural beauty. Hills, bunkers, huge greens and the wind on your back. Nothing and nowhere beats St Andrews for pure Golf.

I’ve played on many great courses...but my 2 games here in 1987 were very special. 3 other really special rounds I had were Royal Birkdale ‘87, Pebble Beach ‘95 & Waterville, Ireland ‘05 I’m from Melbourne Australia.

If you Google golf courses near Royal Birkdale it gives you a big list and green fees. I’ve played Hoylake, Royal Lytham , Formby, St Anne’s, & Southport in that stretch all good

I was over there in 1987 & 2005, but didn’t know about Hillside then...if I’d known I would definately have played it.

There was an interview with him in his later years when he said "I don't think about that putt much anymore. For instance, there are times when I can go 5 minutes now without ever thinking about it". Then, he smiled. That was Doug.

Had to hurt, but if you put things in perspective, he was a multi millionaire who played golf for a living, in my opinion the best sport to be a pro at, because you dont take hits, and can be a lil fat if you want lol. Plus, with all that money he made, Doug still was probably relatively unknown to many, unlike a Jack Nicklaus or Michael Jordan, who were bothered by everyone when they were out in public. Doug had a great life. I wouldnt worry about losing the Open.

Sanders missing the gimme on 18 to win. Is the most literal example of pressure getting the better of a person ever! Stood over the putt for ages. Stopped to pick up something that wasn't there. And then reached & nearly touched the ball. Right after he hit it. Very heartbreaking to see him come completely undone in that moment!

They didn't pay much for winning The Open in those days. Trevino once said he won The Open twice. If he had won any more, he would have been bankrupt as he lost money every time he traveled over there.

Prior to 1966 the open and u.s.open were three day events with Sat having two rounds. The open 1966 was played wed-sat( not sure when they changed to thu-sun) the u.s. open was thur-sun from 1966 on. PGA championship was match play until 1958 because of television they didn't want to chance losing a big star early so stroke play it became.

Trevino always claimed Sanders played the wrong second shot at 18. Sanders was a superb bump and run merchant but not as good at the loft shots.. the fact he put it 35 feet past the flag from 70 yards out tended to suggest Lee was correct

If there was justice in this world, youre probably right. I loved the Golden Bear, but under the circumstances, I think I would have relaxed on the throwing my putter in the air celebration, only because of the way Doug Sanders lost. Maybe im a lil overboard with my thinking though.
