I love the language! I went to South-Africa in December and I could understand much of what the people said/ wrote in Afrikaans. I think that's because I'm Dutch. So reading Afrikaans was quite easy. Since then I've been in love with the country, the language and Jack Parow.

They're not the same thing. Dutch/Flemish is one language but Afrikaans is another one. It's apprently easier for Dutch speakers to understand Afrikaans then the other way around. But we have a lot of Dutch/Flemish dialects that are sometimes harder to understand than Afrikaans.

Well if i hear Afrikaans i hear 80% Dutch and 20% English, so it might be a lot more than a few words that are the same. I looked it up in Wikipedia and it says it actually was Dutch, and over time is "corrupted" into Afrikaans.

Whilst learning about the Dutch history in school we also have lessons about colonialism and my teacher also gave specific lessons about the Boer people and the wars between boers and England. Boers are basically the former Dutch colonisers that is why we learned about them in school

In Belgium I speak Afrikaans in the shops and restaurants and they always understand me. Except in Amadeus ribs where the manager was anti British despite my best efforts
