And his primary motivation for becoming Chaos is just because he wants to get stronger, and to fuck over the Lufenians for fucking with him.

Jack actually matches very well with Garland and even th Warrior of Light from Dissidia. During the story all the villians have their own plans and all the heroes have some doubt EXCEPT Garland and the WOL. Throughout the whole plot Garland just mocks everyone trying to scheme and wants to fight the Warrior of Light. Meanwhile, the WOL is so laser focused on Garland and his crystal that he is ignoring and not taking any of the villains seriously to the point where even Sephiroth and Ultimecia get frustrated with him not listening to any of their evil speeches.

The demo is so weird and scatter-brained, I loved it. The story is completely bizarre and disjointed; they try to humanize Jack in some ways and he just responds with some vague frothing at the mouth about Chaos. They give you a boss fight, THEN a combat tutorial afterwards, but before the combat tutorial they have Jack walking through a field to the tune of That's Life. I couldn't stop laughing, it was like the game was societyposting at me in real time. But then the gameplay was actually pretty alright.

Regarding the whole theoretical "legacy" argument: Garland has no depth. His very existence is paradoxical in universe, what with all the time travel shenanigans, and he was written so paper thin that there is no legacy to taint. I think Stranger of Paradise's entire story is basically expanding on that throwaway line at the beginning of FF1 about how he was the kingdom's most loyal knight and something changed him. As for Warrior of Light, he doesn't actually have a presence in any game except Dissidia. He is basically a composite made for promo reels and such; no character has either a design or a power set like him. His very idea is more of a heroic, almost messianic series icon, rather than an actual historical character. It's a slightly uncouth comparison, but he's sort of like somebody like Joan of Arc, it's less about the exact person and more what they represent. Defacing WoL would be like defacing the prophet Muhammad, you'd enrage a lot of people.

It also helps that Jack is at least kind of nice to his allies and doesn't act like a fairly disinterested sleazebag. If Jack does something edgy, it comes off as more genuine rather than just trying to make him look edgy or a bad attempt at trolling. Donte doesn't work because the game tries to have it both ways; he's too much of an edge Lord to be as charmingly wacky cool as Dante classic, but he's trying too hard to be carefree and humorous to be as charmingly sincere in his mission as Jack. The best contrast is Jack telling Lich "I don't give a FUCK who you are!" Vs. Donte's whole encounter with the Slurm Queen. Really, I think Nero is the one that manages to pull off what Donte couldn't.

He's right when he says he'll never die in the cycle he's created, but he'll never get to do anything except get killed by the Warriors of Light as Chaos and Garland. So, when the game was originally announced, I remember finding Jack's attitude incredibly interesting and started running off on theories that didn't hold up as time progressed and more information got released. At first, my thought process was like: "Jack knows who Chaos is from the start, WoL in FF1 start without their memories." "There are supposed to be 4 Warriors of Light, there's only 3 of them, 1's missing." "They really want to kill Chaos and Jack is impatient with everything and always angry." I initially came to the conclusion that this was 1 or more cycles deep into FF1's time loops and something went wrong. They lost 1 of the 4, somehow retained enough memories to at least know Chaos needs to go despite memories usually being wiped completely on loops, and now Jack just wants to speedrun back to the end of the game to fix things, something is wrong with every part of this and it'll probably end horribly. Then the Demo came out and it we got a better look at things. Oh, those don't look like Crystals of Light, those look like Dark Crystals. And then the Garland fight happened and we get Neon and that whole thing ran its course to the point where the Devs just said it was Garland's story outright after a bit. And now we've got the full release. I was more or less expecting something along the lines of a fleshed out story of how Dissidia's Chaos came to be or maybe even how Garland got there and decides to ride or die with Chaos until he gets bopped in Cycle 13. I haven't finished SoP yet, but so far, I've just gotten Dimensions and the Lufenians committing fuckery as usual, which is honestly pretty in line with Dissidia NT's premise of needing to implement those zones from other FFs to keep its own world stable. But then there's the Stranger Project, which seems more or less as inhumane and on the same level of bullshit the Onrac Military is pulling in 012's reports. Whenever I get to the end, I'm thinking this'll be another solid entry along the lines of 012, KH, and TWEWY, where the main plot is going and the characters are solving immediate issues relevant to them, but the (Secret) Reports that help with world building also reveals there're a lot of fundamental issues at large and some greater power the characters never truly confront. Also the music in SoP is the hottest shit I've ever heard. Nothing but bangers and remixes out the wazoo. It almost sounds like FF13's music composer made it, including the one area that literally just seems to be an FF13 one.

@@Iffem FF1: The "Sky Castle" where you fight Tiamat is quite literally a satellite; they changed its graphics and sprites in later releases to look more like a traditional castle, but the entirety of FF1 is contingent on the ancient Lufenians having highly advanced tech; they're the ones who created the crystals and the shrines. Truthfully though, the most common obvious ones out of the gate are FF4, FF8, FF10, and a distant runner-up in Tactics in that the games straight up tell you from damn near the outset "Their used to be way more advanced civilizations, but they're gone now. Here, look at this magic crystal that's not actually magic but science."

Having now gotten my hands on it (PS4, performance mode, to be clear), Pat is 100% correct: It plays great and looks like absolute fucking hot trash. Like, there is zero anti-aliasing and every texture looks like the lowest quaity JPEG you could possibly imagine being UV wrapped to a modern 3D model. But because it plays as well as it does and because its story is so charmingly absurd, I’m totally on board with it. Edit: Also, I have actually seen a few insane people getting into a froth over pissing on the legacy of FFI. The legacy of the guy who said he was going to knock you down, then returned at the end of the game to get possessed by a giant demon. People certainly do choose some quality hills to die on.

It's really funny, because in other games, like Dissidia, they expand on Garland, and he's actually a pretty neat character, because he's wise and knows more than he lets on, and he actually does seem like, before Strangers of Paradise was even a thing, you'd think he would actually **be** the WoL's counterpart. Garland is low-key great even beyond knocking people down.

i personally think its because the first trailer seemed like absolute out of touch shit. then the demo drops and it plays well. then the final trailer drops and you realize oh its total fuckin over the top melodrama and they are leaning into it. that and the MY WAY by good ol rank made me wanna buy it and so far its living up to what i wanted. an over the top melodramatic edgy game full of just stuipd fun ideas. its like a b movie that plays extremely well

Yeah I think your memory is failing you guys here. Yes the original Garland from the OG game was nothing much. Dissidia version of Garland is a epic hammy badass, (voiced by Chris Sabat), wielding a cool multiple weapons in one great sword of which changes constantly, and with actual interesting moments in story mode of that series. Jack Garland of Strangers of Paradise is an edgy no fun anti jrpg Isekai punk. Both kicks several amounts of ass though.

It definitely looks like a 360 era game with the fuzzy/blurry/glowy edges around all the assets, especially character models. Maybe even a bit worse. FFXIII looks better on a technical level. Game's pretty fun though.
