While out at Pelican Point, Namibia, close to Swakopmund on sea patrol with Ocean Conservation Namibia (OCN), activists Antoine and Namib_Naude spotted a Black Backed Jackal limping in the sand. It was clear he had a big bundle of fishing line restricting movement of his back leg.
Ocean Conservation has never caught a jackal before and it took about 15 minutes to get him tired enough for the animal rescue. Once in the net, the jackal calmed down and allowed Naude and Antoine to cut him loose with their Leatherman tool.
He ran off to his friend with immediate improvement in his walk. He would have lost his leg, possibly his life, if he had not been helped. This animal rescue is another example of animal cruelty due to human carelessness, which has let to less and less safe space for wild animals as well as climate change and global plastic pollution. 🦭
