Well, while it certainly doesn't arouse me, it does get the adrenaline pumping. For some reason I enjoy watching violent action scenes (not real life though, it's real people we're talking about then and I won't have that) in videogames or films. Machineguns shredding, missiles blowing up, lasers and plasma incinerating, chainsaws&co slicing messily, hydraulic fists crushing... Apparenly I find some beauty on destruction. Or I'm just messed up. But only on action scenes, in combat between opponents. Harming innocents&defenseless and torture are too inmoral for me.

I still remember being a kid seeing this playing on some old tv in the 90s at a flea market and being completely hooked on it. It was nothing like anything I saw in western animation. Exotic Japanese comics, and anime were definitely another world. By comparison Japanese video games like Super Metroid had music and art styles absent from anywhere else. I guess more investment went into video games and they were targeted more to a foreign market, still they were masterpieces. It's hard to tell if good work like this has become rare or if I have just become over stimulated with flashy new media of all kinds around me.

I watched this for the first time when it was released, and it made me put Akira on my watchlist. Yesterday I found out it was on Hulu and watched it tonight... Absolutely mind boggling storyline, and the sudden jump from biker gangs to MK Ultra was insane! This is what real anime is defined as- something conversation worthy aside from the glitz and glam of new shows. Don't get me wrong, I love films/shows old and new, but there's just something about watching something older. The animation of this film was STUNNING. Like, literally FLAWLESS! Lifetime of kudos to the animators and directors! I hope to someday read the manga as well! To all who made it to the end of my late-night ramble, thank you for listening!
