Terrific. I had hoped last year there would have been a major celebration but it seems that he was overlooked. Sad. Terrific composer !

Interestingly, the Suite from the Ballet Music from Hiawatha (of which the cover is displayed at 3.33) is entirely different from the Hiawatha cantatas and, as I recall, has no music in common. Does anyone know what this ballet music was used for? And thanks for a fascinating insight into the life and work of an unjustly neglected composer.

As a matter of fact I have the 1934 Royal Albert Hall program in front of me now. I found it among my great-grandparents mementos. It was a musical in 3 Acts with dance and song. Coleridge-Taylor orchestrated the entire poem!

Fascinating piece of history. My point, however, is that the Hiawatha ballet music and the cantata are completely different!

Apparently, it is a standalone work that Coleridge-Taylor published late in his life, after writing the Hiawatha cantatas! Wikipedia says that it is in fact his last (published?) composition. Its opus number 82 comes after the amazing Violin Concerto op. 80, the “last major work” that Avril Coleridge-Taylor mentions. While I am not sure of this, I would not be surprised if the Hiawatha Ballet Music were intended for symphony concerts, so symphonies could play a suite of pieces with themes from the Hiawatha cantatas. Sort of like Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite for orchestra or Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet suite.
