Are the uk and great Britain not the same thing?

They're not. The UK is a country which consists of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and controls some other bits and bobs over the seas. Great Britain has 2 meanings. The original meaning of it was the largest island in the British Isles (which later became multiple islands as the Caledonian Canal and other canals separated it into multiple islands which would have been 1 island without human intervention). People often say that Great Britain is still an island though. The political meaning of Great Britain is the land within England, Scotland and Wales. This includes some islands off the coast such as the Hebrides which are off the Northwest coast and the Isle of Wight which is off the South coast. A few hundred years ago, there was a country called The Kingdom of Great Britain which controlled all of the British Isles (with Ireland as a dependent territory). After some rebranding, we ended up with what we call the UK today (United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland).

@@Fluffy_Bean No, it isn't. Take your own advice, and think (maybe also try checking Wikipedia) before you comment. Ireland hasn't been part of the UK since 1922. _Northern_ Ireland is part of the UK, but that's separate from the Republic of Ireland.
