Project Zura episode is Gintama version of Jackie Chan's movie "Project A". That movie is one of my top 3 Jackie chan's movies and is absolutely hilarious. It is only famous in Asia bcuz the movie was not introduced to Hollywood back then.

That Jackie Chan questions and you cut out the part, but the one when Yamazaki imagined the backstory with the two soldiers picture, but it just ended with "Jackie Chan's nose is so big right?" got me in my guts so much when I first watched that scene. 😂

And the fact that the guardian dog arc was actually just a filler arc💀

These are where things are getting better. Guardian Dog is a really good one off emotional episode. We get some time at the bridge and the graveyard, two big places for the series, and it's the first promise in series that Gin's failed to fulfill, something that will be important later. Then the Jackie ep is just comedy gold. Sorachi is getting better at punching up the comedy into something that is consistently funny, and the animation is steadily improving. You've already seen it, but the next episode is almost a direct follow up to this one with Katsura and the jailbreak. My own theory is that Yamazaki 'caught' Katsura here and had him sent to prison on the next one as revenge for the insanity of this ep.

@@Mang00wt It's not that it isn't funny, it's that it isn't as consistent. A lot of the early jokes rely on 'in-jokes' between the characters (which makes rewatching it Very funny) and some of the jokes are more hit-or-miss. On top of that there are a few episodes that are outright boring (not many, but most of them are piled up near the start.) This is Sorachi's first work and he definitely struggled early on to find his voice. The anime does a LOT to improve on the early manga in terms of pacing and impact, but it can't correct everything (and adds a few flaws of its own.) Still, every 50ish episodes the series gets demonstrably better, mostly because of getting a bigger budget, but also because Sorachi got better as a writer each year by a noticeable amount, which makes the jumps in quality Stunning. I think it's very entertaining from the start, but I now know all the in-jokes and puns so all of those land for me now. First time through I was waffling a lot (read the manga first) for a long time on how much I enjoyed it. It was funny sometimes, but not really anything more than middle of the road until somewhere in the 200s that things started to click and I enjoyed it enough to see it through to the end. It just doesn't have the strongest starts out there.

@@Mang00wt I mean, I get where you are coming from. I just finished my second re-read and working through my 4th re-watch. But I'm re-watching with a lot of first time viewers and picking up where people are having problems. Generally on a first pass even the people that are enjoying the show aren't Super into it until episodes 100-200, which is fine. The comedy Does get better, that is a promise that Can be made. Every aspect of the series continuously improves throughout. It gets to 'reasonably good' in the 25-50 range, that's about where most of the bigger flaws have mostly been shut down and the comedy is solid. But it really doesn't start breaking into peak until 100-150, that's when the comedy starts to every episode hit, and the drama sharpens up to always land the emotional blows. It's built on what came before it, but a lot of people tend to struggle with the series until the 100-150 episode mark, this is just what I'm seeing from watching with other first time viewers.

@@Mang00wt Oh hands down, once you get the humor of Gintama the whole thing becomes amazingly funny. The main 'trick' is that a lot of it is "community" humor. The start of the show is like moving into a new community, and while you are getting to know these absurd weirdos most people are naturally, nervous. Once the weirdos worm their way into your heart you understand the type of humor that has been there since the start. First time viewers tend to start figuring out the humor of the show between 25-50, comfort seems to come between 100-150, and then it Really starts to click with people at around 200+. Those first time viewers will then go back, see episode 3 again and go "shit this is fucking the funniest thing ever, why didn't I see that the first time?"

I know there's still like 100s of episodes you gotta cover, but definitely keep this Yakuza and his story in mind as you go along. Because you will learn about a character who practically mirrors his situation that it hurts every time to think about. It doesn't 'exactly' reflect, but it follows eerily similar beats that lead to a painfully tragic experience haunting this character every waking day of his life.
