In the 1980s, Irish football changed, thanks to an unlikely hero. Legendary England centre-back Jackie Charlton would take charge in 1986, with the Republic of Ireland having never qualified for a major tournament. It was initially controversial with his status as an Englishman, but he would soon go on to become a hero in Ireland, and generate memories that would last eternally.
