It has been a day of endings for Jackie & Shadow with the breaking of one of the eggs, and now the covering of the remaining two eggs with nesting material. Jackie came to the nest tonight and she began to aerate the nest and is so doing, covers up her two non viable eggs. It is time to say goodbye to them and to the lost dreams & hopes of the season. 💔
After Shadow saw the broken egg this morning and touched the eggshell, he flew off the nest and did not return to incubate the other eggs. It was a surprising turn of events for our Shadow as he was the one keeping the eggs incubated for the past 5 nights in a row. Shadow knew that the eggs were not going to hatch and decided it was time to move forward. 💔
And in another surprising turn of events tonight. Jackie comes to the nest at night - something she has not done in almost a week now, and she promptly covered up the eggs with nesting material. It was her way of saying goodbye to her own lost dreams this season. Jackie then left the nest and we could hear her and Shadow with their evening symphony of chortles, closing out the day and the season. The eggs are not buried in the nest, just covered up. They may get uncovered, they may become part of the nest, or they may be still be scavenged upon by ravens. Both Jackie and Shadow said their goodbyes today and will turn their faces to the sun tomorrow and move forward once again as the strong bald eagle couple they are and have become together.

Egg #1 laid 1/25/24 at 16:55. Egg#2 laid 1/28/24 at 13:59. Egg#3 laid 1/31/24 at 17:58. Standard incubation period is 35 days. Here at this nest, the eggs hatch 38/39 days. It is unlikely that the eggs will hatch & we really don't know why they did not hatch. It could be environmental, such as temperatures, humidity percentages, oxygen levels at high altitude, etc. It could be biological with something just being off at the time the eggs were created. It is very unlikely that either Jackie or Shadow are infertile since they have already had 2 sets of chicks together-in 2019 and 2022.

It is a great loss for them! They dedicated all their energy to the potential of eaglets for a long time. Both doing their best awaiting their offspring's arrival. I can't imagine the loss they are feeling! I've seen them mourning loss in the past and hope they will continue to try in the future. I'm very sad for them. As are we all.

I wonder why their both sounding off was not notated in the Live Recap? I get that FOBBV might be reluctant to call it a ‘ grief song’ but the way it’s notated, it’s just as if an one eagle called out, not that both sang in unison for 20-30 seconds, or that it’s even related to J finishing the egg covering and rejoining Shadow. I’m calling BS on this. I’m not reluctant to call the sounding off their grief song, because there was love, sadness and solidarity in their singing.

The Big Bear nest is my “Home” nest…. The first nest in SoCal (home) I began watching. I love this couple, I love where they live, I used to while away hours of my day watching the cam. It’s been a rough couple of years for them, and sadly I understand it completely as my wife and I have dealt with our own fertility problems for the last four years. I have started to not simply enjoy this nest, so much as I’ve started to feel everything they’re going through inside me. I remember last year when Shadow gave up. He just got up in the middle of the night one night, stared at the eggs for a few minutes, and then flew away and never returned. I don’t want to imagine how devastated he must have felt seeing the broken egg, but seeing that he hasn’t been back since it’s not hard to do. But this takes the cake for the saddest, most poignant thing I’ve seen on any of these nests yet. Whether or not Jackie meant to cover the eggs there is a finality, a closure here that anybody who has tried and failed to become a parent can feel deep inside their soul as they’ve closed out one more chapter of their life just like that too many times before. My heart is with Jackie and Shadow.

What an incredible moment to share with the world. I lost two of my own adult sons during the past 3 years. I have been following their story all the way and never posted. But today seeing Jackie standing over her eggs and giving them her final goodbye, tore my heart wide open in full understanding. All mothers grieve. It’s a long process to be sure. And then they/we finally go on. Just like Jackie took off on that branch last night, we with broken wings have to free-fall to the next leg of our life journeys. Hoping Jackie’s courage will help all of us who have lost someone dear to our hearts. PS. When my first son died, a beautiful red tailed hawk came to us and sat vigil on our garden fence for hours. We named him Tomahawk. And he’s still here 3 years later and I saw him mate. He has a partner now! Hoping for viable first eggs here in Connecticut. Raptors give me the deepest sense of peace and steadfastness. Let’s hope Jackie and Shadow are blessed next year. I know I’ll be back.

I just sat here and cried. 😢 I am truly moved by this last chapter in Jackie & Shadow’s journey with their unborn eaglets and seeing her cover them up and not look back but instead take flight.😢In her last lesson for me in watching her in these videos, I think she just taught me how to release something or somebody when I have to and just put my trust in GOD and move forward. Yes, I caught Jackie covering the eggs last night.... I believe she did it so that Shadow would stop incubating them. I feel that she already had come to terms with her own good-byes a few days ago, but clearly wanted Shadow to stop his nighttime incubation sessions and be with her instead. My heart tugs for Shadow... the broken egg was definitely a turning point. He tried to incubate after he found it, but I imagine it just didn't feel quite right anymore. Oh how I love Shadow! Both of them, or course. But Shadow is such a deep-feeling softie. I watched this live and it was so heartbreaking yet there was something that felt renewing, like life goes on, we mourn for what wasn't and keep on keeping on. I've learned so many lessons from watching this couple and the ones in SW Florida as well. Their resilience is admirable and I know we were all watching and hoping for things to turn out differently. GE Lady Hawk. My heart goes out to Jackie and Shadow and it breaks watching this. So sad to see her do this! You and I were both there LH for J&S's courtship when we all believed he was mute many years ago since he was the quietest male we had ever seen. I had mixed hopes again this season for success as we've learned this nest is best taken one day at a time with guarded expectations. I feel deeply sorry for J&S though as another consecutive season has slipped past them. I still believe it's the windchill at 80ft up and the underinsulated nest that's causing this tragedy. I will pray J&S continue as a couple since Eagle divorce can happen when the couple fails to produce eggs and we already saw Jackie divorce Mr. B before Shadow so she's capable of it (though it isn't Shadows direct fault that this failure is continuing). Prayers for J&S and all my love to them for their future and my condolences for their loss again.💔

I think it would take more than unhatched eggs for an eagle "divorce" to occur with Jackie and Shadow. Their bond is the strongest I have ever seen among mated pairs. Egg hatch failures have been common with them and yet their bond grows stronger each year. If another male comes along and displaces Shadow as Jackie's mate, I don't think it will have anything to do with hatch failures but the strength of the male. Fortunately, few adult eagles venture into their habitat and Shadow on patrol has kept out intruders thus far. Also, I believe it has more to do with the oxygen and humidity levels at this altitude as to why the eggs don't hatch, since eagles in Alaska endure much harsher temperatures than Big Bear. But we will never know the reason(s) and can only speculate.

So heartfelt, watching Jackie, cover the eggs, it’s like the human life… we go to the graveside service, for the final burial, of our loved one, covering the body, in a sense like J.&S.do. (Well, Jackie did , with her eggs). I’m praying for their safety as they adventure on, doing what they do best. Their instincts tells them what’s next. Джеки поняла, что пока Тень видит яйца, то не может бросить их - и скрыла их от него. Такую эмпатию и заботу у человека не часто можно встретить! Но это и забота о яйцах. I believe Jackie was trying to cover the eggs two days ago - not just aggressively aerate the nest - but Shadow wasn’t ready yet to let go of the eggs, so J gave him more time. I’m going to try to get FOBBV to notate that as J rejoined S after she’s covered the last two eggs, both eagles sang out for 20-30 seconds. It needs to be scientifically notated, and it shows another connection eagles have to grief that I think is completely downplayed.

This is very sad, but Jackie is ready to move forward. It will take longer for our boy Shadow. I've never known that Eagles bury their unviable eggs. Life begins again for the Circle of Life. We love them none the less and all the more. ❤❤❤😢😢😢

What a story this season has been. I love these eagles dearly and my heart hurts for Jackie and Shadow. They deserve to be parents again and they know it too. Perhaps Jackie's actions is not only in grief but in hopes of having a second clutch. I know it is unlikely at this point but I saw that Audacity just laid again and after Harriets miracle second clutch in 2020, I believe anything is possible.

Jackie was so patient with Shadow and gave him all the time he needed while still bringing in sticks and fish. I am left speechless. 💔 I can't help but cry and I'm not holding back my tears. I loved watching these two eagles and it was disappointing as a human being to see the outcome, but as far as we know, they do not mourn or feel sad, but continue on to the next phase of their lives. Next year, all going well, they may attempt to mate again as a pair and succeed or not in rearing eaglets. We must wait and see. This is life for them - not the same sort of lives emotionally or otherwise as us. Take heart in that.

Thank you Sergei you may be right about that woman are stronger than men. Shadow did the same thing in prior seasons - did not wan to stop incubating and did not want to leg go when Jackie already did. At least now they both are going to move on ♥
