I missed a crucial part of the egg getting broken so I wanted to update and redo the video for completeness. In this video, I inserted the clip of Jackie arriving to the nest early in the morning with a big stick. When Shadow gets up, Jackie while trying to place the stick, steps on the eggs and it appears one of her talons pieced an egg. You can see some darkness in the eggshell and it looks broken. Shadow leaves and Jackie leaves.
Then Shadow arrives back and looks at the broken egg with disbelief and sadness. My first video began at this point with Shadow arriving to the nest at 07:51am.
Shadow incubated the eggs last night for the fifth night in the row since Jackie stopped incubating them. Shadow remained steadfast in his hope for the eggs to hatch. Shadow sees that one eggshell is broken & lost all its structural integrity. Shadow is looking and observing very closely at this development - then he rolls the eggs and we see the broken egg better. Shadow continues to incubate.
Shadow will get up to move a stick and comes back and pulls up what appears to be a thin piece of dark membrane on the egg. The eggshell is compromised. Shadow keeps getting up and then returning to the eggs - he knows that is not a hatching egg & something is wrong 💔 Shadow flies off and takes a break and returns about an hour and a half later and pulls up the eggshell with his beak - it appears to be empty. Shadow incubates and the next time he gets up, the egg is gone from view. The eggshell was crushed underneath him and shell fragments are all that remain.
Shadow knows...his dream is now gone....and he flies off the nest 💔
He may return and continue to incubate the other eggs but he probably will follow Jackie's lead and eventually give up and let nature takes its course with the eggs. Bless his heart....it is so hard to let go! ♥ Three lost dreams & precious lives. It is important for the eagles to move forward and start to resume doing normal eagle activities. I hope these two videos will help clarify the events that took place this morning! Thank you for watching!

Egg #1 laid 1/25/24 at 16:55. Egg#2 laid 1/28/24 at 13:59. Egg#3 laid 1/31/24 at 17:58. Standard incubation period is 35 days. Here at this nest, the eggs hatch 38/39 days. It is unlikely that the eggs will hatch & we really don't know why they did not hatch. It could be environmental, such as temperatures, humidity percentages, oxygen levels at high altitude, etc. It could be biological with something just being off at the time the eggs were created. It is very unlikely that either Jackie or Shadow are infertile since they have already had 2 sets of chicks together-in 2019 and 2022.

It’s funny/not really funny how Jackie just got up off the eggs one day and knew it was over and is now trying to help shadow come to the same realization. She could be down at the lake enjoying our spring/summer weather but is helping her mate move on. Nobody can convince me that these beautiful eagles don’t feel love and sadness for each other and their eggs/babies. We love you J&S, next year will be better ♥️♥️♥️♥️

I agree with you that they feel sadness...all animals do but what really amazes me is Shadow's wanting to be not only a dad but I feel if he could lay eggs like a female that he would be the happiest Eagle in the world. The dedication and love is so heart breaking that it ends in another sad year.

I sense that Jackie may have been trying to expedite the process here. She likely doesn't want Shadow to keep on incubating as long as he did last year. She has shown in several other ways that she's trying to help him stop incubating.

I’m so sorry for Jackie and Shadow too😔💔❤️🦅🦅🥚 cause I did see when Shadow came back and noticed too that the egg was broken, he was in such disbelief and he even looked around to see if another bird had maybe caused it. Watching that part had brown my heart for them and especially Shadow cause he has definitely put in a lot of time in incubating. Seeing this video earlier kinda in real time, made me actually cry for him and Jackie too cause I could see the disbelief and sadness in him. This video and the real time too when it actually happened shows that Eagles and all animals surly do have feelings and definitely show emotions too. Please don’t ever think that an Eagle doesn’t have feeling or doesn’t even hurt cause this video surly shows they do. God bless our sweet and wonderful pair Jackie and Shqdow too. Shadow truly was grieving - he loves/cares deeply for their eggs+eaglets. He has a very soft heart for his family 💙 So very sad this year. Stephanie

Also peeking if E23 is still at SWFL. Also if Gabby and Beau are still together. Also Newman (the playboy Peregrine Falcon) at Great Spirit Bluff Cliff Cam is still mating and chosing a mate for the egg laying season at La Crescent MN. Bonnie and Clyde Great Horned Owls and their two little owlets Annie Oakley and Wyatt Earp in Kansas. Big Red and Arthur the Red Tailed Hawks and their 4 eggs at Cornell University in NY. Two other Goose nests. My son's divorce is finalized but there's still lots he has to deal with. My sister has kidney disease. Please say a prayer for both of them. I see my pain care Dr Tues. My heart breaks with the outcome of this years eggs … but I’m so thankful to those who have brought Jackie & Shadow into our lives!! This is the part that is so very heartbreaking to watch. I feel so bad for these two loving creatures who want so badly to be parents AGAIN. Shadow is devoted caring & loving and you can see their knowledge of knowing deep down inside their babies are not coming but yet they just need to give it all they got. Jackie clearly is over it. She is ready to live her life with her mate to perhaps try it again very soon with hopes & prayers of success. They are steadily building up the nest with sticks for the barrier rails - so I think they know they will try it again soon. I just LOVE these two ❤. J & S deserve nothing less than greatness. The eggs are so thin and fragile now, that even a bump can crack/break them. They are like dried leaves in the fall 🍁🍂

I believe Shadow's 'perplexed' look and stare when he noticed the egg shell was cracked open was from his biological expectations that when an egg cracks open, a chick emerges. It was as if he was waiting cautiously for the young to materialize before any more incubating.

Saddness for JACKIE N SHADOW that no eggs hatched as they both tried endlessly to keep on the nest. Nice sunny day n makes ya think where was this weather when they needed it badly. Half of the egg shell was missing on the broken egg. Most likely as Shadow settled down on the clutch during that last time he crushed down the rest of the shell. The ravens probably won't miss spying that broken egg and know its time for them to clean up the nest.

@@socalfun64 I was told it was crushed down into the nest. I saw Shadow pull what looked like a grey feather out of the large hole. How do you crush a baby bird down into the nest? I told them all this on the chat when asked why I did not believe the therory Shadow crushed it into the nest.

This pair is inspiring to watch. Love and devotion! Is the background noise this loud for the eagles or is it wind/river noise? Any way to mute or muffle it while still enjoying the eagle calls? They are still mating. Will they have another clutch of eggs this year? Thank you FOBBV!

Its heartbreaking! They are both great parents. It was truly a valiant effort even though they both felt the eggs weren't viable. It consumed me for the last months just watching them until they finally started to withdraw. Will continue to follow them and hope for new eggs soon!

Did you hear that crack? I heard that one of the eggs crack as soon as Jackie's talon landed on top of it. It wasn't the stick, but Jackie's foot. She put an end to incubating the eggs. Shadow, came back and saw that the egg was cracked and he was sad. He gave it all he had and hopefully he'll move on. Hopefully he and Jackie, will succeed another time.

Just watched, I think it was Jackie, come to the nest and make the remaining eggs go away. She punctured each one then buried them. So intelligent. It is done. Hopefully next season they'll have babies. The time stamp of it in the live cm is at 19:49 and at 19:51 you can hear her chortles.......sounds of mourning? Made my heart ache but I know they'll be alright.

I feel guilty putting a like tick to the video, knowing that it'll help Shadow move on and give up incubating. I feel for Shadow as he looks at his egg waiting for a chick to emerge. I wonder if Jackie did it deliberately helping Shadow come to terms that this season is over for them.

I think Jackie stepped on her egg on purpose. I think she's more agile and smarter than accidentally stumbling on her egg. How did she not step on the three eggs for months, then when there's a good reason to do so (Shadow's acceptance), she cracks one? If she didn't intentionally, maybe she stepped on it because she no longer sees the eggs as her potential chicks; they're just part of the nest and the past. Still, I can't help but think it's too poetic that the cracked egg lead to Shadow's acceptance, that she had to have that foresight. If so, a brilliant strong bird with a sensitivity to her mate. If not, I'm projecting and it was accidental and instinctive.

@ladyhawk Wanted to ask, Is it possible for Jackie to have a second clutch? Alot of people seem to think so. Have to say with no meaness intended kinda glad one broke, At least we know now it wasn't a eaglet and I Felt so bad for Shadow 😢 But maybe this will help him move on Bless his heart 😢 Also I read where Dr Sharpe said that eagles will find another mate when there is 2 to 6 failed hatchings. I truly hope that this doesn't happen to Jackie and Shadow 😢 Also Jackie has been bringing sticks and fluff is this just her trying to get Shadow to move on or normal for her to do this?
