“America's Got Talent” finalist Jackie Evancho reveals she has anorexia, which led to her osteoporosis diagnosis. Last year, Evancho was in a serious car accident that broke her spine in two places. She later learned that she had deprived her body of proper nutrition, leading to her developing osteoporosis. It's a disease that most commonly impacts women 50 years old and up. Evancho says her battle with her eating disorder is still a work in progress.

Her and I have strikingly similar stories. I developed an eating disorder at 14. Got in a severe car accident at 19. Broke my spine, had four spinal fractures, CT scans showed that I developed osteoporosis from my eating disorder, which weakened my spine enough to break. My heart goes out to her, although we have different lives, it seems like we both have similar struggles regarding eating disorders and car accidents. Really goes to show that it's more common than you'd believe. I'll keep her in my thoughts and I hope her recovery goes well. It's a long, difficult battle, but learning to cherish your body and learning to treat yourself with gentle care is important.

People don’t understand how hard it is and I hate that people make it a joke or a “ cute corky thing” they have. I struggle everyday with my issues, I had an experience where I passed out in the middle of the road while walking my friends dog and that scared me and has pushed me to realize how bad things were getting. Passing out was an eye opener and honestly learning experience to me, I am trying to be better with my food. It has been really hard but I know it’s the best for my body. I feel ashamed even saying this but even this morning I had a bowl of cereal maybe had a fourth of it and I couldn’t eat it anymore I felt sick, I know my body needs food tho so I pushed through eating a granola bar with protein and for lunch I had Spanish rice. I feel ashamed but I know I’m working hard and I have been seeing progress with how much I eat. It’s just hard to break a cycle of what I’m use to, but I will continue to work hard cause I deserve better and to not be in pain cause I am hungry. I just miss how I was and will work MY ASS OFF to get back to being healthy!

We went clothes shopping the other day, and she couldn't find a size small enough for her. Even the xxxs was too big. “I’m so sorry you’re going through this. Know that I’m here for you in any way you need me. I love you.” My then-boyfriend (now husband) said these words to me when I told him the truth about my eating disorder. That was six years ago and I still remember his words. Nowadays, when I have thoughts of restriction or compensation (because the thoughts never go away) I signal him to hold my hand or hug me. It always helps to talk about the thoughts I’m having with him, even if all he can do is listen. What’s most important to remember is that only she can pull herself out of the darkness of this disorder, with the help of a specialist and with the love and support of her family and of course, with you. I feel for you. It’s not an easy position to watch someone you care about suffer like this. Recovery is 100% obtainable, even if the thoughts of anorexia (or any other eating disorder) come and go. May she recover ❤️

Bless her heart. I dealt with that from about 17-30. It wasn’t noticed by anyone in the family- they just thought I was thin and I actually got praise for it. Only once did a boy from high school make a comment along the lines of “ya know, guys do like curves…” when he saw I’d lost quite a few pounds. I’m fully healed, but unfortunately I didn’t know that I even had it until I noticed it in most of our five kids. Even our son is consumed with “living a healthy life”. One daughter is in therapy for an eating disorder… etc. it’s a blessing to get the diagnosis and to get cured before you unknowingly pass it to your own kids, like I did. (My husband doesn’t help, unfortunately. He still feels thinner is better and constantly crosses boundaries with our daughter who has the eating disorder. It’s difficult.)

She's beautiful and has been beautiful since AGT and will continue to be beautiful as she heals herself. Beauty is not the outside but what's inside shining through. Take care of yourself

Gorgeous woman, shame about the car crash. I also injured my spine. The good news is it can indeed be healed. I basically dislocated half my body but through alternative healing and scientific procedures, I'm still in good shape. Calisthenics and just hanging helps. You can return to as you were Jackie. It's possible.
