@jimreily75386 жыл бұрын
@lord havmercy Well to be fair to the boys, they weren't stoned on marijuana, they were using a stimulant, to boost their focus, stamina and endurance, as well as to improve their courage. But unfortunately one side effect of stimulant usage is, it makes people edgy and so more liable to do things like, say, discharge a firearm. So, yeah, let's be fair, not a good idea all round. These guys weren't exactly Special Forces soldiers planning a raid on a high value target. Not the brightest dudes in Jersey and possibly among the dumbest
@jimreily75386 жыл бұрын
@K A Oh and on the question of who is more Well armed, the average Mafia member, if he is smart, is absolutely NOT going to have a weapon on him if he's walking the streets, if he's doing business anywhere that the cops have access to. Why ? FBI undercover agent Joe Pistone makes this clear in Donnie Brasco, the book, which I highly recommend. Cops know wiseguys. They are "known to police" to use judicial parlance, because they have usually been attested and because they are monitored. Cops routinely "roust" wiseguys and connected guys, meaning they'll tail them, pull them over, search them. They do it to send a message that, "hey, it's not just the FBI and other federal agencies going after you. We are local cops, we know you're criminals, and going to make your lives hard, so it's harder for you to commit crimes." Now a wiseguys who carries even a pistol with him, if he's on parole or had been arrested before, will have the book thrown at him. Or certainly, a gun charge is a charge is one he DOESN'T need, and depending on his background, it will likely send him to prison. Could the mob get access to assault rifles and other high end weaponry ? Sure. But why would they want to and why would they need to ? Storing it would be a hassle and a huge risk. They would almost never be in a situation where they would need to use such a weapon. So it makes no sense to have them. Gang members on the other hand routinely access these weapons. They steal them from military bases (as many as 10 000 serving military personnel today, have been identified as either gang members or gang affiliates). They steal them from legitimate businesses. They buy them from other gangs. They buy them from corrupt soldiers and corrupt cops at the local or federal level, or steal from police armories. Why ? Gangs are mostly made up of kids. A gangster who is older than 25 is considered a veteran. He is lucky to have survived that long. If you're in a particularly violent city like Chicago or Baltimore, you're living in a place with between 1 and 2 murders EVERY DAY, and you're living in the neighbourhoods where those murders happen. They don't happen all over. They happen in concentrated areas usually no larger than 10 square miles. Young men want to show off their guns. Watch Gangland and you'll see, every time, gang members on camera wielding every time of firearm from pistols like your .50 Desert Eagle Action Express, to Uzis and Heckler & Koch machine pistols, to assault rifles like AK47s and AR15s. You see gang members with grenades. With explosives. With almost every type of small arms weapon you can think of. Gang members are routinely more violent. Look at the murder rates between New Jersey and Maryland. In 2017 there were more murders in Baltimore than the entire state of New Jersey. You don't see 300 murders a year in the ENTIRE STATE of Jersey. New Jersey has a population of 9 million, Maryland is 6 million, and Baltimore (Metro area) is 2.8 million. The DeMeo family is, according to David Chase, based on the real life DeCavalcante family, operating out of Elizabeth, in Union County, NJ. The entire Union County had 19 homicides in 2017. That's a murder rate of 3 murders per 100 000 people. Remember, that's the entire county, not just the city in which the DeCavalcante family operates. Now, Baltimore, and this is just the city and not the county, had 343 murders in 2017. That's a murder rate of 56 murders per 100 000 people. The entire STATE of New Jersey in 2017 still haf a lower murder rate than Baltimore: 335 murders in New Jersey that year vs 343 in Baltimore. These murders are all in ghettos and between 50 and 93 percent of them are gang related. That says alot right there. And even in Jersey the highest murder rates were in gang infested areas. Gangs are inherently violent because they're compromised of kids with no real foresight or planning, some have seen nothing BUT violence their whole lives, they wanna be tough, they wanna prove their tough . They are reckless and brutal. If you want to talk about sophisticated money making schemes, the exercise of true power, the aggregation of wealth, all those things are clearly what has made La Cosa Nostra a century old institution in America. But gangs are clearly more violent because of their recklessness and they're more well armed because they need to be. Gang life is urban street warfare with murder rates comparable to the low intensity insurgency in Northern Ireland ("The Troubles") that lasted 30 years. So yeah I think it's pretty clear drug gangs in Baltimore are more violent (they kill more people) and more well armed (they possess higher numbers of firearms and of different varieties), than any Mafia family. The average Mafia family today has according to estimates from OC crime studies, fewer than 100 made members, and some NY families have less than 35 made members, according, again, to estimates. Gang members have access to firearms and they use them every single day against each other in turf wars that turn entire neighbourhoods into warzones. Regardless, both the Mafia and gangs are parasitic groups who feed from honest civilians, who cause harm, and who are driven by greed. The lust for money, power and criminal authority shouldn't be admired. Having said that, gangs and LCN and actually OC groups of all types are fascinating and I have enjoyed reading about them for many years. So I will leave it there. I would like to hear your thoughts about this. Perhaps you disagree with me and it's possible I'm totally wrong. I've never been one to hold fast to my opinions in the face of the facts, and actually I try to let the facts inform my opinions, so my opinions are based on evidence. But I'm always keen to hear your thoughts (or the thoughts of anybody else) on this topic, whether you agree with me or totally disagree. Ok, and yeah, if you want some eBooks about the Mafia I'll take a look at what I've got when I get home and I Will post the list in a comment. I've got Donnie Brasco and a follow up book by Pistone released some 10 or 15 years later in which he talks about stuff he couldn't mention in the first book (since trials were ongoing when the first book was released). I've got a few biographies by connected guys. I'll be happy to convert them to EPUB or PDF using Calibre, and post them to a Dropbox or somewhere else. Hopefully they won't have any kind of advanced copyright protection. If they don't , I'll just write a list and you can see if they are on TPB or other ebook libraries. Take it easy man

Think Chris knew that with the look he exchanges with Furio which is why he went for Carlo (guy with shotgun) soon as shtf. I like to imagine he got shot in the head the moment he realised his mistake, a jolt of terror followed by eternal nothingness. At least Dino's last conscious experience was horrified desperation that dropping Ralphies name saved him, Chris's delay probably meant his last feeling was a glimmer of hope growing from his terror then suddenly it's all turned off forever. As for Jackie, dude was just thinking about how a 6 year old beat him at chess, he's the only one who didn't see it coming, one moment he exists and the next he doesn't. These kids did it all to themselves. They all only had one life and they wasted it. Matush survived because he knew he was a coward who didn't belong as part of it. Until ofc he apparently became a terrorist (according to Agent Harris).

The shot of Chris Moltisanti turning around was meant to be a surprise to the viewer-and once his presence was made clear, you KNEW that the boys were screwed.

Beauty of this scene is that it shows the stark difference between professional gangsters and civilians. Chris doesn't even turn around when the door breaks. The only one who keeps talking is the dealer (another civilian). Tony's crew acts calmly with confidence because they know eventually they will find out who did it and serve justice. Watching this, I realize Jackie is the one who snapped, blew Sunshine away and wounded Furio. So he really has no one to blame but himself. His idea, his fuckups and he sealed his fate. In truth, he should have bugged out the second he saw Christopher and Furio there. And it got even worse when Albert arrived on the scene, because not only is Jackie shooting at made guys (Eugene, Christopher, Furio), but a freaking capo (yes, Albert is technically an acting capo, but he's still running the Barese crew while Larry is in the slammer). Shooting at made guys is a death warrant in itself, but shooting at one of the leadership? You'll be lucky if you get an open casket funeral.
