Junior’s an interesting character: he’s intelligent, experienced, perceptive( he new Christopher was a loose cannon from episode 1, constantly pointed out when Janice was causing shit, deduced that Livia manipulated him( though it’s not like she denied it), and correctly realized Tony was the safe play.) but at the same time his pride, narcissism and petty insecurities allow him to be easily manipulated . He would have been an excellent adviser or number 2, but the number one spot makes him to big headed, as season 1 showcased.

***** Albert's Cousin Larry was a Capo. Richie was feeling out how they felt about getting rid of Tony. Albert said that with his Cousin's trial coming up Larry wants to play it safe. What he was really saying was "We have always made money with Tony as boss, but I don't know that you could do any better." Richie told Junior about this meeting and Junior realized that the Capos don't "Respect" Richie; and Junior then told Tony about what Richie was planning knowing that Tony will reward his loyalty with more "Income" for himself. It's important to remember that this was a sly, clever, extremely calculated decision on Junior's part. Everyone was loyal to Jackie Sr because he kept everyone happy by sharing the wealth and not allowing members to rob each other. When he died with no successor, Tony and the capos set the stage for a fragile arrangement with Junior as boss and Tony as street boss- this destabilized the family because Junior was a selfish bastard who didn't have respect while Tony was alienated from some of the others like Richie and Ralphie, with Christopher in the picture people started pulling teeth and claiming each others' pieces of the pie. Literally everyone was loyal to Carmine Lupertazzi Sr, but the moment he died NY went into civil war mode until Phil won. Even then, Phil let his ego and hatred destroy a good business arrangement. It's hard to establish loyalty the moment the unifying figure is gone.

Richie clearly feared Tony because he knew he could be just as much a violent psycho as he could, but he knew Tony was smarter than him. Tony always had the reputation of being “boy wonder” so I think Richie went to Junior for help because Junior was known to be a clever and strategic captain. Problem is Junior used that same intelligence to betray Richie and get a better deal.

Brilliant scene. Gandolfini plays it so well. It’s understated but you can really feel his suspicions initially. See it in his eyes. Great feeling when he comes round. Always loved Jr.

Junior is such a bad liar, as if he gives a fuck about Tony or his family. He just knows he's better off backing up Tony rather than Richie. He's basically a whipped dog at this point.

Obviously Junior's backpedaling and confabulating after the fact. Tony knows it and calls him on it, but then he decides he'll go along with appearances. Unspoken thoughts. Good writing.

looking back on this scene it makes me wonder why tony didn't punish albert for never letting tony know that richie was plotting against him
@joeschmoe366510 жыл бұрын
True, maybe he thought if he spilled anything to Tony, Richie would deny and his word would fall short and then he'd be a corpse for sure
@nitekilla10 жыл бұрын
Albert would then be deemed untrustworthy by other capos for not keeping his mouth shut... even when it comes to a coup. Plus if he'd told Tony straight away he'd be seen as a "teacher's pet" trying to get on T's good side. I'd like to think Tony probably taxed him (off-screen), just as a slap in the wrist for not telling him.

I love the dynamic between these two while Junior is "still there" as you know Tony knows how that manipulation game works.
