I grew up in Detroit but only heard about Jackie Wilson. It wasn't until I found this song on a 45 in a trash can. I played it and cried when I heard his vocals. I NEVER heard anyone sing like that before in my life. I was instantly and forever a Jackie Wilson FANatic!! Rest In Power. There will NEVER be another voice like him.

Robert you leave a very interesting comment, authentic and original, as I myself have twisted over this song, all my life; its popularity, and the many who covered this endless inspiring ballad; for me, questions always arrise. First and foremost Is about a man loving another man? As many males have covered this song. Or is it, someone singing for a long gone pesonality and friend he can't forget? Or is it a very longing jester to a brother or life long fond singing star; or is it, a female singing the song, being she had to leave him, and now in her grave she chants these lyrics,, and her spirit wishes her lover Danny to visit, often or sometime; because when he does, she will be there in spirit? Whatever the case, this version and the voice is powerful, and its a beautiful love song if anything and I think that's the whole poem. Thanks for your post.

Jackie Wilson to put it simply was a RARE talent that had NO peer who equalled him. There were other fanastic singers at the time but then there was Jackie Wilson. The man had charisma, looks(somewhat similar to Elvis Presley, particularly around the eyes) and a voice that to this day has NEVER been equalled. Jackie was a fullvoiced full ranged tenor who would've been a smash as a opera vocalist had he chosen to go that route. His stage shows were displays in showmanship SUPREMACY as he knew how to grasp the audience by the the throat, guts and heart and keep them in spellbound delirium with the strength of his voice, dancing and charisma. Here on Danny boy one gets to see Wilsons vocal acrobatics on dramatic display. Neither Elvis, Sinatra nor Michael Jackson had this kind of vocal muscle as good as they were. In my view Wilson is STILL the yardstick by which I measure other artists.

+Curtis Ostriker You are so spot on with your comments. I was fortunate enough to have seen him live on two occasions. When I was a young boy, my dad would take me on vacation for 2 weeks in the summer. For about 3 or 4 years in the early 1960's he took me to Wildwood, N.J. We stayed at the Manor Hotel and the Manor Supper Club had performances every night. A lot of the performers were big stars, but many were of my Dad's generation. Even so, I appreciated the opportunity to see people like Peggy Lee, Connie Francis, Al Martino, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, etc. My Dad made sure that on two of the years we visited the Manor, that the schedule coincided with Jackie Wilson's performances. He was always so excited, and he kept raving about Jackie until the time of the shows. Right from the minute Jackie began his performance, I understood why. It didn't matter that I was a white boy of 8 years old, I could sense greatness. It didn't take a rocket scientist to see that. Jackie had a universal talent. it didn't matter what race, age, or even musical taste. Jackie Wilson transcended all of those things and was truly one of a kind. How lucky was I?

***** I'm just talking about the content of the music. And don't be so sure that traditional standards wouldn't have been on the menu because remember Motown put out the Mellow Mood Album with Temptations to get them into the Copa and to crossover. You think they wouldn't have don't the same with Jackie? SOmebody like Shelly Berger over at Motown managing Jackie Wilson "Night" "All My Love" etc would possibly have been just the tip of the icerberg. And think of the hits they could have done with him that we can't even imagine. And sure there were some sour grapes at Motown but nothing like the crap that went on at Brunswick was mob owned (rumor is he was literally strong armed into signing his contract Luca Brasi/Big Red style) and look what Brunswick has done since his death. They've done a sh*t job with his catalog and really, unless your into soul music Jackie Wilson is practically an unknown. Laymens might know the song "To Be Loved" or "higher and higher" but wouldn't know that was Jackie Wilson or know that those songs were just a small sampling of what his body of work has to offer....there's no reason for that given how much great material there is in his catalog.

I've heard this in so many styles, even by George benson when I was his personal assistant and butler, but nothing can or ever will beat the ever so beautiful and sweet version with Jackie Wilsons uniqueness added to it, this was sent from god himself folks.❤

Oh my God what a voice!! Unbelievably the best male vocalist ever! I can't get over how many different places he could take his voice.

I love Jackie Wilson!!! His voice was truly amazing--what a range!!! Michael Jackson said that, as entertainers, both Jackie Wilson and James Brown inspired him. But overall, Michael is still the greatest performer of all time! He was the most famous entertainer on the planet!

Best rendition of Danny Boy I have ever heard. He was a dynamite and emotional singer. ,That is why we called him ,'Mr. Excitement. Loved all of his songs. .

I Haven't heard this in so many years. To each his own, but I don't understand how anyone could find any negativity in such beauty. There are the talented, the gifted and then there's Jackie! The thing that always got me was how easily he could go from an R&B/Blues/Jazz improvisational or pop bag and literally sing Opera! And he had the ability to mesmerize virtually any audience. Not too much like this happening today. Blessings everyone!

I had seen him sing this at the Apollo, simply amazing! He had a set of pipes, None of these younger singers can touch his talent. A full voice 1st tenor.

Absolutely. I like this video because it shows that he could sing excellently outside of a studio. Gives me the chills every time.

Cissy2cute Oh yeah, no bad notes, the riffs are minimal only emphasizing expression....no autotune...just pure talent

gua117 He is greatly missed. My hubby knew a nurse who took care of him in the nursing home before he passed--it broke her heart everytime she had to go in his room. BTW, this is why I liked Ed Sullivan (although this is not from Ed's show) because he demanded people actually performed with no lip syncing allowed. Jackie sounded amazing, something that could not be said for some of the other performers.

gua117 I would like to sit down with you because I read his biography and as a screenwriter I'am considering a biopic on the legendary Jackie Wilson. Yahoo! E-mail Address: ramonhartmanager@yahoo.com

I always wonder what is it they were doing to train and practice their talent to get so Amazing??? What is it that this generation talent rubble compared to Jack Wilson, Frankie Lymon, James Brown, Sam Cooke and believe the list goes on.
