@turtletail313

It's also important to consider the unfair pressure on white women to have more "black" features, such as thicker lips and a more curvy figure. Being "flat", which is more common in white and asian populations, is now basically synonymous with being ugly and childlike. Many white and asian girls are now growing up in a society that expects them to have the body of Cardi B, which of course they can never naturally achieve. I guess what I'm saying is that everyone is the victim in this situation...white women for now having to live up to an impossible standard, and black women for often times not being given credit for trends or being called ghetto for just existing.

@@marleangreene6117 Karen’s girl. I went out to brunch with my friends last year not even realizing that it was Cinco de Mayo and I saw so many younger white college kids wearing sombreros and panchos as a costume. I go to a Mexican restaurant in a predominantly white neighborhood and you see tons of older white couples who just love the food and culture but I’ve seen the same type of people talk about immigration and building the wall. Not everyone is the same it’s just the pattern I’ve noticed. I think it’s fine to grow up different and not understand but when you have an opportunity as an adult to educate yourself it’s important to understand different lifestyles and why people get upset when things get “popularized” when the mainstream Caucasian media gets a hold of it.

I wanted to appeal to white people so badly. And now at the age 26, watching all of these nonblack girls participate in a culture I shunned to be accepted by them makes my blood boil. I’m glad I’ve grown to embrace my culture and love myself for being black. But it’s something disgusting about watching nonblack people be praised for something I would be ridiculed for.

That thing about loving full lips on non-Black women has been happening for a while. Remember the media's fascination with Angela Jolie's lips back in the day? Meanwhile, I was bullied all the time (and even sexualized) for having big lips as a middle school kid. Also, you can always tell when people don't know and understand AAVE or just think it's "slang". Nope. AAVE has set rules and patterns of speaking and grammar usage. Just equating it to slang or "improper English" like some folks do is an insult.

It is so disturbing. Thank you again for your content; you provide opportunities for us to enhance our beauty on all levels! When you were talking about black womens natural hair it reminded me of a story my mom told me...she went to beauty school in the 60’s and they would have days where people could come in for free for the students to practice on...my mom asked a black woman if she’d like a wash and cut, when she went to wash her hair it didn’t lather like the white hair...she said she was embarrassed but asked the lady anyway what she was doing wrong and if she could teach her....later my mom spoke to the teachers about being taught how to take care of black hair, because it didn’t even occur to the owners that they needed to care about something like that...and it always made me sad, how can you not include everyone in something as benign as washing hair, I just wanted you to know I heard you today

@Storm I worked at a school/salon for a couple of months as a guest service person and they did not teach about black hair well. It was super frustrating to witness. They gave them a "textured" head to practice on as if all black people have the same hair texture.

Yeah. You get that a lot with some hispanic people (because they are a group of entirely mixed race people) due to their colonial programming and that guilt comes from the fact some poc, especially older generations want to be both on the side of the white racism (the authourity group), and feel white but also want to be poc when diversity is marketable because they know they aren't white or that they see it being okay to not be white now. They can't accept the fact that they often fight for both ways and get no where. They have always had the option to conform to the legacy of racism that black people cant fit into, because black people are what white supremacy has held as the furthest away from it. Its the vibe I got from Jennifer Lopez' Superbowl, when she shoed up after Black artists were protesting it, then made it all about how much of a good Latin American she is, with no black Puerto Ricans near her.

I’m so grateful for the natural hair movement and black women. I’ve had curly hair all my life (3A) and my mom/the people around me had no idea what to do with it. I had to do my own research on the internet, and a lot of the info I ended up utilizing was from black women. For non-Black people with curly hair, I’d recommend supporting black-owned businesses when it comes to buying products for your hair (i.e. silk hair wraps, conditioner, hairbrella, etc.).

I am of Spanish descent and have hair type like J. Lo(thick, high-density, wavy). Because of the black community, I understand now that there are different hair types. I was bullied in middle school (by my “friends” too) for having such thick hair and begged my mom to let me get layers and thin it out. I was surrounded by white friends with thin eyebrows and thin hair who needed a dime size of conditioner to get through the week. I’ll happily give credit to the black community for their knowledge.

@R Mia You know blonde hair and blue eyes isn't a eurocentric feature right? Plenty of native Africans....who would be considered black and even African-Americans have natural blonde hair and colored eyes, ranging from blue to hazel. As for white skin, a black person can naturally have that as well, it's called albinism, so white people can't even gate keep their own skin tone. But in reference to lightening, that comes from the global stigma that dark skin is bad and lighter skin is more desirable. I have a degree in politics and Sociology so I have facts for you all day.
