What I appreciate most is the lack of wastage. Many woodturners have the habit of taking the ugliest wood stump and turning it into the most beautiful toothpick. A big part of understanding your medium is not throwing most of it away.

All the good things have already been said. That’s just mind blowing. Didn’t even realise you could buy coloured plywood, let alone make it into a piece as amazing as that.

That's really lovely! In quilting, that pattern is called bargello, especially where it uses mixes of widths to create motion. Yours did that naturally, just by staggering the color segments. Nicely done!
@JackMackWoodturning
@JackMackWoodturning 20 күн бұрын
Thanks Meg. How do you make a quilt?
@MEGQuilts
@MEGQuilts 20 күн бұрын
@@JackMackWoodturning You can do a simple one just by sewing squares together into a bigger square, layering it over batting and backing, sewing through it, and binding the edges. If you want a bargello pattern, though, you'll need a few yards of several colors of fabric and a pattern to lay out strips and sew them into sets, then cut the sets across into different widths. Then, depending on the pattern you're following, you usually unsew a piece from one end and add it to the other; unsew a 2-piece segment and add to the other end, etc. until the colors are forming the pattern you've chosen. Then repeat for the whole quilt. If you want, check out the Jordan Fabrics KZbin tutorial about simple bargellos. It's a repeating block rather than a whole-quilt pattern, but covers the basics. Thanks again for sharing your work. I'm not brave enough to film my own.

@@JackMackWoodturning No, and I’m not sure why… I’m not sure why but I never did clay sculpting as an adult - which I was engrossed in as a kid. Perhaps it’s the ADHD. 🙄 What I’ve been doing these days is single panel drawing/cartooning with Prisma Color pencils (adult crayons) on cold press watercolor paper which has a lot of texture. The combination give it a bit of ‘childlike’ energy. I’m doing them for greeting cards I’m making. I also have all the materials, but not the space, to do both Acrylic and Watercolor painting. And most of the supplies to start doing jewelry…LOL And I write non-fiction, fiction, & poetry. And And And… I’m really self taught. I went to school for art, but really what happened was they said do _____, have it done in two days…but never actually showed us how. I guess they figured if we were at that level we already knew. 🤷🏻‍♂️ My Photography Prof. was the exception. He was great. Oh ya, I got back into photography after digital came out. Which out of all of these things, I’m the best at photography. That, I believe is what I should’ve been when I grew up, but I didn’t figure that out till I was 59. Sadly. Now I’ve got ortho issues so I can’t get out to shoot…I’m a nighttime landscape photographer. So you asked about…LOL. When I was mentioning the paint I realize it would be fun to figure out something op art to do w/watercolors . I need a bigger home. Or a separate large studio. I will be just fine with that. 😁
