Jackson's first five albums up to and including Running on Empty were masterpieces - the soundtrack of many of our lives. Beyond that time period, he has put together collectively perhaps another dozen stunning songs from various albums. The great song traveller with incredible insights so beautifully articulated.

Agree. But who did he mean by "the Great Song Traveller”? Bob Dylan? Jesus Christ?
@rlgillon

I agree with the first five album comment. Those were the soul of my life in late high school and college. But, I would also include I'm Alive and Looking East in the masterpieces (maybe not so much Looking East but definitely I'm Alive).

Sounds trite perhaps...but my heart aches for the early 70's and music like this. I feel we have lost something precious in our culture since then. "Show me your heart" has become "show me your money". That is an overstatement perhaps...but something is missing in our way of life "these days"

He gives himself in his songs. He is not a performer in my mind, he is a giver of his music...That's not to say I don't love performers- he is great on stage- but it is something more powerful, more giving. Thanks JB- I absolutely adore you and always have.

What a beautifully stated comment. My youth through this day has always been filled with music. It does become a part of who you are and it holds memories and emotions better than a photo album. I hear a few notes of a song and I'm 15 again, playing Frisbee on the beach with my best friend on a beautiful sunny day. Golden brown bodies surfing, little kids building sand castles and I don't have a care in the world at that moment in time. Life perceived through the eyes of a girl who still looked at the world as a wonderland. A place where no harm could ever come to me or those I loved. The best view of the world we will ever have is during our youth. And the gift of music allows us to go back to that time. It's a great place to be, if only for a few moments.

GREAT SONG. Fits with what is happening these days...am a baby boomer also. We need to turn back to our CREATOR who sent HIS Beloved Son to pay for our sinfulness and regain access to our Father in Heaven/Eternity. That is the answer. We sang "Love is Coming" But we missed the boat. That love came already and it is in JESUS.

Too bad you missed the meaning of this song. Jackson wrote it in response to David Crosby's song Wooden Ships (on CSN&Y Deja Vu). In an interview he said he just could not agree with the concept of just sailing away during or after a conflict. So, voila!! Here is the response.

I saw Jackson do a solo acoustic show in 2002. I was so impressed with his acoustic sound, I got home that night and bought a vintage Gibson J45 on eBay, After 6 months of NOT sounding like him, I sold the guitar. I met Jackson 2 years later at a private event and he told me about his Roy Smeck Gibson which he is playing in this and many other videos. He said this guitar, combined with custom pickup + double drop D tuning gave him this great sound. Thanks for sharing JB. :-)

JB has given the core of his soul to try to bring light into this dark world. The bells will toll as he passes and the World stands still to recognize a single human soul that refused to Pretend that the lives of most people are doing alright. Jackson's awareness of the unnecessary suffering of living beings would crush most of the rest of us. He does not hide from this awareness. He counters with Joyful Noise.

For Everyman Jackson Browne Everybody I talk to is ready to leave With the light of the morning They've seen the end coming down Long enough to believe That they've heard their last warning Standing alone Each has his own ticket in his hand And as the evening descends I sit thinking 'bout Everyman Seems like I've always been Looking for some other place To get it together Where with a few of my friends I could give up the race And maybe find something better But all my fine dreams Well though out schemes To gain the motherland Have all eventually come down To waiting for Everyman Waiting here for Everyman Make it on your own if you think you can If you see somewhere to go I understand Waiting here for Everyman Don't ask me if he'll show, baby I don't know Make it on your own if you think you can Somewhere later on you'll have to take a stand Then you're going to need a hand Everybody's just waiting to hear from the one Who can give them the answers And lead them back to that place In the warmth of the sun Where sweet childhood still dances Who'll come along And hold out that strong That gentle father's hand Long ago I heard someone say Something 'bout Everyman Waiting here for Everyman Make it on your own Make it if you think you can If you see somewhere to go I understand I'm not trying to tell you That I've seen the plan Turn and walk away if you think I am But don't think too badly Of one who's left holding sand He's just another dreamer Dreaming 'bout Everyman Songwriters: Jackson Browne For Everyman lyrics © Jackson Browne/Swallow Turn Music/Night Kitchen Music/Open Window Music
