I did the “I don’t want to go to school” routine every morning as a child. People were just mean at school. I wanted no part of it! Music, animals(specifically ferrets now) and gardening are my favorite hobbies. People often call me a “jack of all trades” because I love to learn about anything and everything. Looking back at school, I know I was different. Now that I’m older, being different is one of the best attributes to have!! 😊

I hated going to school too, Emily. Loved college. Walked out of college with my teaching credentials and had a wonderful teaching career for 30 years. I made sure my student knew I was there, first and foremost to make them want to come back to school tomorrow! I must say I can look back now as a retired teacher that I accomplished that. School is rough for so many students.

Kids called me a faker all the time because I was always trying to get out of school. I didn’t pinch my cheeks to make them red like they said I did. I really didn’t feel good and now I understand why! I should have seen a therapist or something as a child. The crazy thing is that I still remember every detail when the kids were mean to me. It took me years and therapy to understand that the depth to which I feel emotions hugely contributed to my massive weight (around 450 pounds at my heaviest). Food was what I used to control emotion. Angry? Eat. Sad? Eat. Happy? Eat. Feeling out of control? Eat. It's only as I grew older that I realised I was eating my emotions, literally. A therapist described me as highly sensitive. I now understand that I'm an empath. I feel both my emotions and those of people around me very deeply. It makes me extremely good with people. I now see this as a blessing. But, I have to balance it with a lot time on my own, and with my cats.

You're so right about how rigidly unfriendly our day-to-day environments & processes can be to anybody whose needs fall outside the presumed baseline! Even just spending a week on crutches whilst injured will REALLY bring a different awareness of things like basic accessibility? To me, it feels like we as a species are often trying really hard to ignore the fact that people exist across a whole bunch of different spectra, and also that that diversity can really enrich our societies if we are more open to it?

When Jackson mentions being part of a stereotypical (New York) Jewish-Italian family and community, I smiled in rememberance. My Dad grew up in an immigrant-predominant area of Brooklyn (Flatbush). He would immitate the ladies in the community he grew up in, "Oh, you're too skinny! Here, eat. Mangiare", as they passed him some bread or hand-held foods. My childhood brain always translated as "Mun-ja". And it didn't matter how he looked - my Dad was never a chunky fellow, but the neighborhood ladies always handed him (and his brothers) food and told them they were too thin. Of course, that was a different time (the 1950's and 1960's) but it's nice to hear there were other pockets in New York where folks had similar experiences. I enjoyed this interview, having "always" been a fan of Jackson Galaxy and Mayim. Thanks so much!

Toward the end of the lockdown, when most of us had had at least one shot a ground of us gathered in the lobby, still masked and social distanced. What I hear is perhaps someone that is “decision fatigued” not wanting to make yet another decision. One thing that's great about NYC for introverts (I was born there and lived there for many years) is that one is pretty much anonymous amongst a sea of people. And the famous NYC freedom to be or do almost anything you want, and no one cares because the unusual is commonplace on NY streets. And no one wants to be all up your business, either. I think people under-estimate the power of learned skills & also the motivation to help others...? If you're leading groups (as a teacher, manager, community advocate etc) then being an empath can be both really valuable (assessing group dynamics) & a big challenge (being way TOO sensitive to GD 🤦🏻♀️) As an introvert, I know from experience that it's definitely possible to build an acquired skillset, out of necessity, that allows you to function well in a leadership position. But it doesn't change the fact that you re-energise by being alone, rather than by being with groups of people?

I am so grateful you are doing these videos! I just found this channel and will be watching all that is here and all that's coming in the future. This subjects in this episode are so important, especially being an Empath. I have been called "sensitive" for decades. I didn't understand why other people's issues attached onto me like it was mine. The people I were around determined how I felt. By you bringing this to the surface, you can give others the opportunity to hear the word Empath and do their own personal study of what that means. Learning that I am an Empath and how I absorb the energies around me has helped me in public. I can't control the world around me however I am learning how to control my absorption of emotions when I am around others. I can now go to Walmart without being a mess afterwards...although I still try to avoid that store whenever possible. What Mayim Hears is so fun! I think it's a great exercise for people that have to interact with each other! Be it couples, workmates, friends... What a valuable exercise! And how great when it can be made fun! Laughter is so healing... Speaking such things aloud can help our other understand us, and can also help us realize how ridiculous we can be at times! LOVED IT!! Thanks, you guys!

This is by far my favorite episode!! I laughed and cried because I could relate so much to both Mayim and Jackson especially with the connection to NYC and how it makes me feel when I'm there. They described exactly how I feel about my favorite city! I've never heard anyone explain the "vibe" that way. I was born and raised in NYC and moved to CT when I was 18 but I have to visit the city a few times a year to refill my "NYC vibe". I discovered Jackson Galaxy last year when we were preparing to adopt our first kitten. I learned so much from him but I also felt his empathic nature through his videos. He has a calming presence that I am drawn to. My dream would be to hang out with Jackson and Mayim!

I absolutely love Jackson Galaxy, and you're right, he IS beautiful, inside and out. I know that what people think doesn't always help but I hope it helps him!

This episode rings so true for me. Energy is a thing and I have such a connection to reading it and feeling it. Causes such a large amount of anxiety and 40 people in a room... nope. If I can't have a deep conversation in a smaller group or one person, I'm out. Thank you so much. Plus, love Oregon. Feel the most calm and the most at peace there.

OMG!!!! This is so me!! I knew I was an empath as I got older, but I don't think I understand it fully. I've just always felt like a freak and an outsider. I adapted by acting like everyone expects but screaming inside and going home and not understanding the feelings and shutting down for days because of the stress of doing that. I've had some tragedies, 3 in a row very close together, that has thrown me into a place I can't seem to get out of. I really need to get help. Thank you and Jackson for this episode. 🤗🤗

It’s been a year since this comment was posted by you, but I just wanted to let you know it was meaningful to me. Your description of acting like everyone expects but screaming inside helped me to finally “get” what it is my husband goes through on a daily basis. He is highly empathic and, while I am certainly not unfeeling, I have just never had the same intensity of emotions as he. Thank you for sharing what it feels like. I hope that you were able to get the help you were needing and are on the road to healing from your grief.

Jackson Galaxy is the best. I’ve been following him ever since I adopted my first cat 2 years ago.

I cracked up with “What Mayim hears!” My hubby would agree I am the same. Lol. I enjoy this podcast so much. I think empaths must be missing a filter. I walk in the room and I feel it all. I have had two psychologists diagnose me as an empath and it really helped understand me better. It is interesting but still a challenge. Wishing you all well!

I grew up in foster care and had a five year abusive marriage and raised two sons alone. At age 58 I just got an aa in Child development. It is amazing how our first five years can impact the rest of our lives either adversely or in a good way. I’ve never seen a therapist I know I need to. Frankly I’m amazed I’ve lived 58 years without becoming an addict. Actually I’m addicted to sugar can’t thank you enough for your podcast learning so much

Yessss! Tuesday again and this wonderful, educational, healing and fabulous Mayim & Jonathan’s podcast was my morning companion during my ealier morning activities! THANK YOU to both of you! 💜 How I adore “my” Multisensorial Mayim versus “Fed-up with fame” one that many people would think she is! May I say that not being a famous one, nor a shy one either but a multisensorial one (who even has hyperacusis), I feel exactly the same about crowded malls? That I deeply hate Christmas shopping (and I celebrate Xmas), sales days as Black Fridays, even fully soccer stadiums (it made me to quit to watch my beloved F.C. Barcelona live again but watch it at TV instead..)?? Asking myself how it links with that beeing a Western European born and raised, my perfect city is NY and that I need its energy on me to the point that from many years ago I try to go there twice a year too? To let the energy of this city to slap in my face, enter by all the pores of my skin, my senses and my soul and feed my brain? That NY-Barcelona is a kind of link or common shared feeling that many Barcelonians “suffer” and some NYorkers lately too? As if the two cities drinks of mutual energy? Said that, thanks for a great Tuesday. Again! 👏🏻👏🏻I’ll watch the video version later, after work. Because you face expressions and body language, as well your guests ones is “A MUST”! 💎

I appreciated this program. I am a Jackson Galaxy fan. I’ve tried getting my cat on his show, but I had no way to videotape her antics. Her name is Sasha though my larger family call her Psycho-cat because while she’s very affectionate, she scratches and hisses without provocation. That we can see. Anyway, I love watching Jackson with cats - I find it comforting and it makes me more hopeful about my kitty. I also have similarities with him and you as well, Mayim. I am an HSP/empath and introverted though I am more than capable of being outgoing, if necessary. I just have to have some alone time, or I go nuts or get soooo tired. I’m also a musician: I’m a singer/songwriter, and have traveled for most of my life singing in a ministry. That’s how I learned to be outgoing…but I’ve always searched for the bathrooms in every new place I’d go, so I’d know where I could escape and hide, if necessary! I’ve struggled with my weight all my life, too, though I’ve gotten quite ill in the last few years and am pretty thin at the moment. I also HATE large crowds, parties, and social gatherings. They drive me crazy plus I prefer deep conversation as opposed to chit chat, which I don’t tolerate well. I have chronic major depression and anxiety and have been on Antidepression medication for over 30 years. So. All this blabbing is simply to say I am a huge fan and I’ve always felt a connection with you which started with cats! BTW, since I’ve been sick, my Sasha has been very protective of me and rarely leaves my side. She cuddles with me everyday. Sometimes I call her “Velcro” because she likes to be as close to me as possible.

Jackson, love listening to your story. I have been trying to get in touch with you. My husband and I have been Cat Parents for 40 1/2 years. We took care of a Feral Colony in our backyard for over a decade and was able to adopt out over 20 with a friend ‘s help that is connected with Best Friends. We did TNR. We lost two of our house cats last year that were 17 and 15 years old. Our one surviving cat Jack who is 16 has always been a scaredy-cat. He is a good cat, but doesn’t like interactions with humans. As a kitten, he didn’t like to be held long. I know now that I should have tried to feed him from my hand as a kitten. He stays mostly upstairs behind or under our bed. His food has always been upstairs and he eats well. The only time I have been able to pet him is when he boxes himself in a corner downstairs when he has run down because we pull out bed to vacuum. My vet has told us not to approach him and if he comes to us to reward him. When he came into our house from outside as a kitten his older 2 year old brother Peewee ( who we lost last year) would clean him and his litter mate James(who we also lost last year). My husband and I do not want to bring another cat into the house. We are both 73 and wanted to outlive all our pets. After so many years of at one time having 5 house cats, we can’t commit another 15-20 years since we don’t know what the man upstairs has in store for us. So in short, is there anything that we can do to bring Jack out more. We have a pet door in our bedroom and he does go to back room to use litter and look out window. We Love him and wish he would be more social.

What an amazing episode! I have so much in common with Jackson and Mayim. I am an empath, food addict, cat lover and have social anxiety. These are my people! Thank you so much for this episode!

My therapist has been trying to help me replace my maladaptive coping skills with good ones and nothing has really worked so far... I don't know how I am going to even explain this to her next Monday but I wish I could play "What Mayim Hears" on a loop all day.... omg it's definitely taking the lead on my coping card. Your laugh brings me so much joy and everything you say it's so relatable lol

My cat was crying at night. 2 , 3, &/or 4am. I started setting aside 1/2 to 1hr. with her playing just before bed. I put the dogs in the other room & it's just her & I. It works well. She's happier and so am I. I understand your empathy.

Lists and rituals are so good for me. Since covid i have no structure and no schedule and I’m going nuts. I am a workaholic and yes interacting over zoom isn’t interacting. This man has so much wisdom. I’ve taken so many notes. Ha stage Jackson. Ha talk to me like a stranger.
