They’re so similar. I use the Holbein quin gold and love it, but I would definitely be interested in trying the Jackson’s version. I kind of like the subtlety of the glow it’s giving off.

I like the subtlety too. I’m more impressed by it than I thought I would be.

I suspect part of the issue is that pigment PR206 is no longer available. Only those companies who have a stock pile of the pigment like Daniel Smith will continue to make their colours containing this pigment until it runs out. Thanks for the swatch of the Jackson’s Quin Gold. It’s quite nice. And very interesting information when compared to Sennelier’s corresponding tubes and the Series.

I use this one too, finished a 10ml tube and got a full pan to test the pan formulation. In most cases quin gold even works as the only yellow in my palette. When I need less vibrant and subtle colors I prefer Jackson's quin gold, I feel it won't overpower a painting easily. For deeper and more glowing results I gravitate to Winsor and Newton or Roman Szmal versions. The Holbein seems really nice as well 😊
@JayNathanWatercolor2 жыл бұрын
I like using the Winsor Newton and Roman Szmal versions too but the Holbein is still my favourite. That might change though if I start using this Jackson's one in my paintings 🤣

Well since PR206 is being discontinued, and they have to reformulate anyway, my guess is that Sennelier has decided to substitute their gold ochre for the quin gold -- at least in the Jackson's line. This may or may not happen in the Aquarelle line. I just checked their website and their color chart has not been changed yet. It may just not be up to date or they may be hoarding their old stock for their own use.

WOW I am actually surprised at how nice it is! I'm not a huge sennelier fan to begin with but that's a beautiful color

PR206 was discontinued, forcing reformulation by many paint manufactures. If you search hard enough you can still find some older tubes with PR206 available, but I guess not for long.

I've not used any Jackson's brand paints but it looks pretty nice. I would miss that glow though. I'm not familiar with PY119 so I looked on Kim's site, as I usually do. lol According to her it is lightfast, but she only had a few brands to try. It may be one of those that differs greatly depending on brand (like PY3).
@martinanelsonartandpsychol64782 жыл бұрын
Haha, same here. Always look at Kim’s lightfastness tests before I decide for (or against) a new pigment.
@raulbudusan2 жыл бұрын
The only problem I see with the Jackson's one is that py119 and py83 are a lot less lightfast than po48 and py150... but if this is not a problem, they are both beautiful
@JayNathanWatercolor2 жыл бұрын
Ah right. I guess one would have to perform their own lightfastness test on it.

It’s good to know that there’s another nice Quin Gold mix out there, now that PR206 and PO48 are being phased out (Schmincke uses PY150 & PR101 and should hopefully stay the same). I’ve got W&N Magnesium Brown PY119 and it’s a nice orange brown (less reddish than PO48) - a good base for Quin Gold in my opinion.
@TracyIndy2 жыл бұрын
Great idea. I'll have to try that. Thanks
@awatercolourist2 жыл бұрын
I don’t have either; but I did get the W&N Brown Madder PR206 and Jackson’s sent me the PR179 version 🙄. PR206 is no longer produced, as you might know. That might explain why you received a quin gold hue with a different pigment mix.

That was a happy accident. Jackson's paint tubes give you great quality for a small amount of money. I would use that color. PY150 can be overwhelming some times. I've enjoyed many of their other paints that I have purchased in the past.

Well done for spotting this, Jay. I first thought: what the hell are you up to Jax? Know what? Seeing your vid I actually prefer the Jacksons Quin gold/quin ochre or whatever... and the Jax quin/cobalt green mix looks superior to me, more subtle and more to see... for once it's nice NOT to have PY150 lurking in the background! Each to his own, eh. (But no, I do love Azo Yellow) I do use some Jax tubes... I have a couple of tin boxes filled with Jax and Cotman tubes- about 3 dozen or so (one box for earths, one box for the others). These are used in 3 different palettes. (I also made up a couple of palettes with Turner tubes; I'm a loyal fan or Turner... but I can't be without Cotman or Jax- both full of good stuff)

I use the one from qor it has the same pigments as the Holbein. Not a big fan of PY150 though. Started to use the Quin gold deep (only one pigment: PO48) and liked it much better. But that has has been discontinued too now. 😢

I have the Daniel Smith quin gold. I don’t really know what to do with it. I bought it because at the time I kept on watching videos mentioning quin gold. I’m not fond of the DS quin gold. I find that the yellow undertone is very strong. Interesting video, thanks!

Jackson's Quin. Gold looks like Raw Sienna (how it's often made in gouache). It's okay but I would prefer Aussie Red Gold from Daniel Smith over the Quin. Gold. It's just a little brighter and more luminous looking.
@lindyashford77442 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I like the green that you mixed, mostly convenience greens are not so nice, a lot less natural. I am ready to buy four Jackson’s colours, one is their Alizarin Crimson hue or whatever they call it, I hope they have not changed that! That will serve a double purpose, to complete a limited but decent set of Jackson’s, as well as to add three colours to a different set. I wonder if the tubes are the same formulation as the pan you showed…. Your comparison shows a very nice colour pigment mix indeed, it is lively without being overpowering. IMO none of the Quin gold versions around now actually looks like the original, but never mind! I would be interested in how you get on with the other colours you got as well, the tube versions have a few quirks, but I think the extruded versions might be a bit more consistent as they are already dry.
