Most of the HBCU bands are more exciting to watch because not only is their music on point. But their showmanship is second to none. ❤

The young ladies are actually called Banner Girls. Also, there is a female drum major in this video. JSU has had 2 before her and one that was not able to take on the role when she was chosen. They stole the show at the parade this year. The dancers are callined the Prancing J-Settes. That song was Luther Vandross "Never Too Much"

The Boom had 3 female drum majors, and 1 who wasn't able to take on the position.

@ladeiiluck She became pregnant. There is a JSU Making A Drum Major documentary on youtube (that someone posted) and she is featured on that one.

No. It’s not typical to march through DisneyLand. This is a special occasion because of the RoseBowl game and the tournament of roses parade. Jackson State was chosen to march through the park because they’re the best band in the country.

The drum majors are called the Jackson Five Drum Majors or just J5 for short, and the "scepter" that you see them holding is actually called a mace. They do a "roll-off" where they simultaneously spin the maces and blow a whistle call. It seems the microphone was positioned near the drumline so the audio doesn't allow you to hear the whistles so well, but that along with the rolling of the maces is what the sections of the band rely on to signal that they are about to play a song. Another fun fact, the head drum major usually wears an odd uniform top from the other drum majors to distinguish himself.

Yes. They have had several women in past years before. So it’s not uncommon to see a female.

***LONG COMMENT ALERT*** Female drum majors (drum majorettes) have been around for quite a while. During my high school band years, we had a drum majorette, and she was awesome. She wore a flared skirt with shorts underneath, so when she did her spins, drops and splits, she didn't give too much of a peek-a-boo situation. During the times the field was wet or muddy, she wouldn't do the splits. One year during a big competition that we'd won the previous year, we wanted to win again and against the hometown favorite. It had rained and the field was muddy, so if any other drum major had intended to hit the ground in any way, they chose not to. Some, like our drum major had white or partially white uniforms (they wear different colors for home and away games, or whichever for competition) so they weren't about to get muddy. Our drum majorette had a plan. She had one of the assistants to put one of the old capes on the ground in front of the podium she'd stand on. She gave her opening salute to the judges by jumping from the podium, making a quick spin and dropped into a split onto that cape in her white uniform that had a skirt. 😃👏🏽 The audience went crazy, the announcer asked if everyone saw that, and we had to wait until they all settled down so we could hear her count off so we could start to perform. 😀 She didn't have a speck of mud on her, and we won first place. 😁 We may have won without her daring move, but I imagine the score might have been a tiny bit lower. 🙂 We're friends to this day, and she graduated in 1983, and I in 1986. The song by Luther Vandross is "Never Too Much". The girls who dance are called majorettes, though they're not what's known as traditional majorettes was twirl batons. I twirled Baron when I was fairly young, and played clarinet and cymbals in middle school and high school marching band and orchestra. What you called a wand that is carried by the drum majors, is called a baton or a mace. They use them to signal the band on what to do. Memorizing music, steps, signals, leaving a space or two open when someone is out sick, but pretending they're still there, (so you don't have to throw off the lineup for the formation) and more are all part of marching band life, and I loved mine. 🙂 Tiffany Blue is definitely a real color. Have you never heard of Navy blue, Royal blue or other colors with particular names added? Tiffany Blue ue is a specific shade of blue that is trademarked by Tiffany & Co. who sells jewelry and unique gifts. I saw a baby's silver spoon for nearly $300.00, that they have.

Parades happen at Disneyland and Disney World twice a day (one around noon and the other at night before the nightly firework display) and different college and even high school marching bands are invited to march in them. When I was in high school I was both in the band (I played the sax) and I was in the orchestra (I played the violin) my high school was invited and I was able to march with the band in a parade like this and I was able to play with the orchestra Infront of the magic kingdom. And yes there is a color that's specific to the Tiffany jewelry company and it's called Tiffany blue😊
