They applied noteworthy power where appropriate and a conscious management of their technical skills. The standard of their arrangements almost compels them to excel in unique ways. Jackson State expanded throughput of the Universal Force. They are an incredible group; there's no doubting that.

Enjoyed the battle. Like JSU rounds 2-5. Felt like JSU played it smart playing some of their bigger hits from previous games and managed to get some rounds through execution alone. It was close though. Something I find curious is folks saying that Southern needs to bring Haymer/Simmons back. For one, Southern is still a top 2 band in the SWAC. For another, in the long and storied history of the Jukebox, y'all really can't think of anyone else that can bring folks in the direction that you want for them? Haymer wrote a whole BOOK on why he wouldn't go back. Simmons is making his own legacy in Texas Southern. Surely you can think of ANYONE different than two individuals who have moved on from their lives and are doing better for themselves. I promise y'all can do so much worse.

I agree with your take that JSU had to pull out some of the favorites of the season to stay on top, they usually experiment with their book on the 5th. Regarding SU, I think they are resting on legacy alone to carry them nowadays. There aren’t any “Nobody does it Better” or “And Then What” or trademark songs of this season that blew me away from them. Comparably, TXSU and Alabama State are real go-getters and if MVSU is given time to cook, they will be coming for crowns in the next year or two. SU was the King of the Jungle and now they’re slowly turning into just another animal in the kingdom.

I really do wanna chop it up with longer time members and get their thoughts on the talk around their program, though. Even with our complaints, and even with the loss of some "it factor," Southern is still a long game for 90% of bands. It's gotta be surreal cleaning up almost everything in front of you and still getting shit on by both your alumni base and band world as a whole. But that's the standard they set, so eh

JSU:4 SU: 1 As expected, JSU’s dark sound and complicated arrangements outdid southerns power and hard arrangements. Reason being: JSU has complicated parts, especially in the high brass regime making it quite impressive that they can play every note clean! the woodwinds are not as audible they still fill in the parts giving it a background which is also impressive judging the fact that the horns are cranking loud as hell. P.S The arranger whoever he/she is, put parts in that help feature the woodwinds so that it’s not all brass. As for low brass and WT, they fill parts in well! The trombones who have the verse of the songs in this battle fit in perfectly with the actual song, as well as the groove the drumline had throughout the battle. Tubas are like the icing on the cake, their parts are also hella complicated making it impressive that it’s clean. As for WT, their grooves are spot on. Bass drums play out in between the horns on every song adding to the groove, T-PHI adding hella sauce on the tubs breaks adding to the hype. Snares keeping it all locked in with the bases. And quints adding the icing on the cake with their fluid parts and immaculate groove.
