Great video. With oil pump alignment tools in place I unbolted the oil pump given a little extra chain slack allowing me to easily walk the chain off with very little effort and the oil pan still on. Took less than 1 minute. I used 2 small Philips screwdrivers & a slightly curved tip pick. Also after removing water pump I used a leaf power & blew out the antifreeze from the block so no spillage when the heads were removed.

Thank you for the info. I am a euro car mechanic since 1988 but got to do a cam/lifter job on a 2016 Sierra 4x4 at work. This saved me dropping the front diff/oil pan/ oil pump. Those clips at the rear of the intake manifold cover are a real PITA! My crank bolt was EXTREMELY tight. The shop's 3/4" impact wouldn't even touch it. Book time is 30 hours to replace the cam! Couldn't you line up the timing marks on the cam gear and crank so they're pointing at each other? Piston 1 should still be at TDC and it might make timing it a little easier. If not then I'd love to hear why.

Excellent guide. In the middle of all this right now. Only thing if you do this again... you do NOT need to pull the vacuum pump to get the timing cover off. Now I just have to get it back on lol

@@purgemedia6794 Yep, engine is purring like a kitten. Runs better than the day I drove it off the lot. @davidspencer22263 жыл бұрын
I have a couple questions, and I don’t want any of them to be detrimental to your video. I loved the video and it answered a lot of my questions. The first is at what point did you set the engine to TDC. Do you have to do it before removing the heads, or does it only matter when it comes time to remove the chain. The second is why did you go with removing the chain with the oil pump still on it. It kinda makes me nervous prying the chain and it’s nothing against you. If it works, it works. I was just wondering how much more work it requires to remove the oil pump to be able to remove the chain easier without having to pry it off.
@craigmcmurtrey80323 жыл бұрын
If you take the oil pump off, you first have to have oil pump alignment tools to make sure it goes back in the exact same location. Also the oil pan will have to be dropped down to pull the pump. I think that oil pan is pretty tricky to remove and install while the engine is mounted in the truck.
@MrMonsterMusicMedia3 жыл бұрын
What Craig said I see a lot of people say if the pump isn’t perfect they have oil press problems
@RyanMonty2 жыл бұрын
You have to remove the oil pan to get he pump out, and if you have a 4WD truck, you have to take the front differential out just to drop the oil pan. It's very...very stupid lol

The timing on the cam gear should be at the 6 o'clock position with the timing gear on the crank gear at the 12. It appears from this video your timing is 180 degrees off or am I missing something here?

Hey Jack did you ever get your truck tuned I've been looking a lot into this but the major disconnect seems to be the encryption on the 2020 LT engines did you have to go stand alone like Holley Dominator be able to get a proper tune? It's really irritating to me that GM puts encryption on something that you can't do anything to when you're buying a truck from them. Maybe after the warranty runs out will be able to tune these trucks and that's what it is preventing the truck from getting tuned maybe after the warranty is out maybe it just automatically lifts the encryption to where you can access the parameters. I plan on putting a Holley Dominator setup on my truck once my extended warranty runs out cuz I want to basically make it a ZL1 but faster just for the hell of it
