In the anime the "five minutes" took about half the season. If you were to cut out everything except Frieza and Goku's fight scenes and conversations, it's still about 45 minutes of screen time just from them. The dragon balls can't kill anyone more powerful than their creator. In the show, they tried wishing for the Dragon to kill Vegeta and Nappa before they arrived on earth, but he couldn't do it.

A funny thing I did on my playthrough around 14:00 when you have your stare down with Freeza I turned on the ki sensing mode and nothing showed up I kind of shrugged it off and went to restock my items before heading back to the fight. I turned it on when I got a little closer and it turned out Freeza's aura was so blindingly huge I couldn't see it when I was standing next to him I found that really interesting. It was small details like that I really enjoyed in this game they didn't need to do stuff like that.

Wishing for Frieza to die wouldn't work. In the anime they tried that with the Saiyans already. But basically if the being is more powerful than the dragon, they can't be harmed.
