Hi there, This is a clip from Jaco Pastorius' big band called "the Word Of Mouth" big band. It's from 1982 and the recorded an album out of this tour (double album in Japan: Twins 1 & 2 and a single album everywhere else called Invitation) Drums: Peter Erskine Percussion: Don Alias Steel Drums: Othello Molineux Soloists: Tenor sax: Bob Mintzer Trumpet: Randy Brecker Plus all the horns...

I'm loving the occasional sighting of a calculator watch on the trumpet player's wrist. A sign of the 80s for sure

Played by probably the greatest steel drum player that ever lived, Othello Molineaux. Look up the ill-fated, but brilliant 'Holiday for Pans' that Jaco spent so much time and money to produce. Hauntingly good.

How awesome was that! Huge horn section, with actual horns, drums, percussion and steel pan, AND Jaco with a pair of massive Acoustic bass amps, right in the middle. I'm still tingling.....

I paid a fortune for the Invitation LP on import in 1983 in Scotland and played it over and over and over. I never saw video of this band until now. Thanks for uploading.

That would be Don Alias on the congas. Can somebody tell me why ANYONE would put thumbs down on this. That stage is LOADED with Monster talents. And many are still today playing at an even higher level than in 1982. Bobby Mintzer, Randy Brecker, Peter Erskine and the list goes on! What a SMOKIN clip!!!

How can 106 people dislike this!!!? They haven't got a clue! Jaco is the main reason I started playing bass, hearing this big band on the invitation record! A big band with full horn section incl tuba and french horn, wistle, harmonica, Then steel drums, and amazingly no piano or guitar, giving the band this unique sound I had never heard before! This is a live clip of that big band from that time!

I love these tracks, as they are as good as anything he did in his career. But one can start to see the loss of stability in his eyes which will only get much worse over the next four years,, and his degradation and death is maybe the most f**king tragic story in American music history, period. To think of it is still incredibly upsetting. How 'bout a posthumous Grammy already, for, you know, changing an instrument forever? Or maybe he just transcends awards, the Hall of Fame and bullshit like that, so who cares. He wouldn't. RIP JP3rd

Jaco was the first guy to REALLY bring bop vocabulary to electric bass. He didn't want to be a slapper, he wanted to be authentic, much like bird, train, and monk were. The man has soul on top of that too.

I'm just getting into Jaco's music after seeing the great documentary about him on Netflix. I don't really have the words to describe how amazing this performance is other then to say that Jaco's tone is so perfect and it's really beautiful and inspiring to watch a musical genius who was so willing to share the stage with other players. He may very well be the one musician who you can absolutely say is the undisputed "best ever" on his instrument.

Jaco was Bach II. Bach is the most important thing to happen to the bass clef. He was born in 1685 and Jaco was born in 1951, which means Bach III should be coming around sometime in the next 266 years.

On the playing surface off the drum are different sized sections that have different pitches. It's like a bunch of tin can tops that are all a different size and tuned to musical notes but they're all hammered into shape out of one big oil drum top. It looks like a metal flower with every bud a different size to sound different when you hit it. The first steel drum band I saw was in Whittier, California around 1960 at Sierra High School. They had a party/dance and here was this steel drum band!
