This song speaks to Settling in a relationship. Getting married and plateauing. Slowing dying over the years, growing apart. Forever chasing the feeling of the honeymoon stage when infatuation led the way. Looking back at the years wondering if all of this was worth the wasted miserable years. But "Devil the I know" and comfortable with is "better than the Devil that I dont". Might as well stick what what I know, scared of the unpredictable and unknown. Saying to yourself, "It could always be worst, right?"

I love your breakdown of the meaning. Makes me sad that it's what many people end up doing. As much as it makes sense for stabilities sake. I want soooo much more.
@iblameabel3 жыл бұрын
That’s what’s sad about today. Everyone thinks marriage is about feeling and emotions instead of commitment and love. Love isn’t a feeling it’s an act, when you make that commitment until death it don’t matter how bad you feel, how bored, how uninspired or not willing... it’s a constant COMMITMENT to put your spouse as high as yourself, seeing it from a perspective not of personal gain. When you get bored or tired of raising a child do you just leave the child? Do you tell the child they aren’t giving you enough? No, because you made a commitment. Marriage isn’t a right, it’s a privilege. It isn’t temporary, it’s forever...

And oh What a way to die Standing eye to eye Pretending we're alive As we grow colder And oh The devil that I know Is better than the devil that I don't So we came forward Running backwards No one man's a island Shotgun riding for ya Somehow we made it Although jaded Was it worth it all? I recently lost a friend to suicide, and this song has helped me through the pain. She passed away, while our relationship wasn't in a good place. I learned a lot from her, she meant a lot to me. We could not have been any more different, and we often argued, but I always wished the best for her. I experienced the highest and lowest period of my life with her. We strived to understand each other, and chased emotional connection, we went through a lot together, especially her struggles with depression. We helped each other, and overcame a lot, but in the end, we became jaded. Even though it was destined to end, it was worth it all, I wouldn't take anything back. she was worth it all.

jacob meditates on the concept of love and loss that runs through his songwriting. He forewarns of the cost of love, remarking how love is expensive and that it all comes to an end regardless of how you feel or what you want… particularly in relation to marginalised groups and conversations around oppression, he highlights that even though everything ends, something will always take its place.

This song sums up my past relationship, I had strong feelings to end it, but I just couldn't let go. All the years we have spent together, there's no way on earth i'd let that slide. Even though I could feel our values and goals drifting apart, i still stayed, until we couldn't stay no more. Is it more painful to let go when you're suppose to, or when you've invested so much time and letting go hurts deep inside. Well, it's been a year, and I'm glad we did. I only feel better now, i don't think the pain was worth it!
